A “connection reset” tells you that the FFmpeg-to-YouTube connection failed; it does not identify whether the cause was FFmpeg, the VPS, a network route, a firewall, or YouTube’s ingest side. Diagnose it by matching the complete, timestamped FFmpeg log with YouTube Live Control Room stream health, then checking the encoder settings and measuring sustained outbound bandwidth from the VPS. Without those records, there is no basis to blame Mumbai, a particular provider, or a YouTube ingest region.
What a connection reset does—and does not—tell you
RTMP uses TCP/IP, and FFmpeg documents port 1935 as the default RTMP port. A reset or other transport failure means the connection did not continue normally; that fact alone does not locate the fault or name the system that caused it. Confirm the protocol, ingest URL, and port actually used by your command rather than assuming the stream is using default RTMP settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a Mumbai VPS, location is context, not a diagnosis. Establishing a Mumbai-, provider-, or route-specific cause requires the affected VPS’s logs and measurements, plus provider-side evidence where available. The title alone does not establish the VPS provider, the ingest endpoint, the failure frequency, or whether bandwidth was insufficient.
Start with the failure timeline
Preserve the full FFmpeg evidence
Before changing settings, save the complete log covering the failure and record the exact UTC time. Keep the full command and FFmpeg version/build configuration with the record, but redact the stream key anywhere the command or log may be shared. Note whether FFmpeg exits, keeps retrying, or reports a protocol or socket write failure. Do not diagnose from a single error phrase without the surrounding log and context.

- Record the VPS provider, region as identified by the provider, and the ingest URL/protocol and port in use. Do not publish stream keys or other credentials.
- Note when the disconnect began, whether it recovered, and whether FFmpeg itself stopped or remained active.
- Preserve relevant host restart, process supervisor, firewall/security policy, connection-tracking, or provider-event records around the same time. These are investigation leads, not proof of a cause.
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP and its options; it does not make a transport error, by itself, proof of which component reset a particular connection.
Match the log to YouTube’s stream health
At the same UTC time, open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream health and any timestamped status or error messages. YouTube distinguishes ingest and encoder issues such as incorrect format, bitrate, audio/video configuration, and keyframe frequency. If it reports one of those problems, correct that configuration before treating the event as a network reset. If encoder output and CPU look healthy but the connection still breaks, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points you toward the strength of the outbound internet connection.

Use YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide and live streaming error messages alongside the FFmpeg log. The two timelines help distinguish a format warning from a coincident connection interruption; one side’s message does not automatically establish what happened on the other.
Check the encoder before changing the network
Compare the actual stream output with YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and constant bitrate (CBR). Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds.

| H.264 example in YouTube’s guidance | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s encoder-setting recommendations; they are not measurements of your VPS’s available upload capacity. Bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current YouTube table for the exact combination you are sending. A setting outside the guidance can explain an ingest warning; it does not, by itself, prove why a TCP connection reset occurred.
Measure VPS upload bandwidth and stability
Measure outbound throughput from the VPS during representative streaming conditions. A download-speed result measures the wrong direction for this diagnosis. Compare the available upload bandwidth with the combined configured audio and video bitrate, and include YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. That margin is guidance, not a guarantee against interruptions.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Run a suitable outbound throughput measurement from the VPS, preferably to a relevant destination or measurement endpoint, while reproducing representative load.
- Compare the result with the total stream bitrate, including audio, and check that capacity remains above that total with the recommended headroom.
- Repeat near a failure window if possible, and align each result to UTC timestamps in the FFmpeg and YouTube records.
- Look for sustained or intermittent outbound-capacity problems rather than treating one speed test as proof that a long-lived route was stable.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend sufficient upload bandwidth and 20% headroom, and warn that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. A one-off measurement can help check capacity, but it cannot establish that the connection stayed healthy throughout an intermittent failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify protocol, port, and host-side events
Confirm from the actual FFmpeg command and logs whether the stream uses RTMP or RTMPS, and which ingest hostname and port it targets. FFmpeg lists 1935 as RTMP’s default port, not a guarantee that every YouTube stream or configuration uses it. YouTube recommends RTMPS; switching protocol is a controlled test, not proof that encryption will fix a route or transport failure.

Compare the exact disconnect time with firewall or security-policy changes, connection-tracking behavior, host restarts, process-supervisor events, and provider network notices. These checks can reveal a coincident event, but temporal overlap alone does not establish causation. Ask the VPS provider whether it can confirm a network event or relevant policy at the recorded time.

FFmpeg’s basic TCP keepalive option enables SO_KEEPALIVE. FFmpeg documents that platform-specific keepalive timers are not configurable through that option. Keepalive settings are therefore not a general repair for an unidentified reset; do not treat enabling them as evidence that the underlying problem has been solved.
Test changes without losing the evidence
- Save the original command, settings, logs, and timestamps first.
- If measurements point to inadequate capacity, reduce bitrate or resolution within YouTube’s current recommendations, then retest under comparable conditions.
- If the evidence points toward a route or provider, run a controlled comparison from another network or provider while keeping the media settings constant. Ask the VPS provider about event records for the affected interval.
- Change one variable at a time and repeat a test before crediting a change with the improvement. If several settings or networks change together, the cause remains uncertain.
No single protocol, bitrate, keepalive, or provider change can be prescribed as the fix without the incident’s logs and measurements.
