Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →First check which OBS counter is rising: Network Dropped Frames points to the connection or bitrate; Rendering Lag and Encoding Lag point to local PC workload. They need different fixes. Open OBS Stats while streaming, identify the problem, then change one setting at a time and test again.
Diagnose which kind of frame problem you have
“Drops frames” can mean several different things. OBS separates connection-related dropped frames from rendering and encoding lag. A viewer’s buffering is another symptom, and does not by itself identify which OBS counter is responsible.

- Start a representative stream or test stream in OBS.
- Open View > Stats and watch Dropped Frames (Network), Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag, and Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag.
- Note which counter rises while the problem occurs. Make one relevant change, then repeat the same test and compare.
Network dropped frames
OBS says network dropped frames mean the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS describes this as extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself. Check whether upload capacity, Wi-Fi, the route to the ingest server, or software affecting network traffic is the constraint. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
Rendering or encoding lag
These counters indicate that the PC is struggling to render the scene or encode the video in time; lowering network bitrate alone will not address that workload. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and avoid competing GPU work. On Windows, OBS recommends trying Run as Administrator for GPU overload. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

Check bitrate against both YouTube guidance and your connection
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations below are ingest guidance, not a measurement of what an Indian internet connection or a particular PC can sustain. The table reflects YouTube’s current guidance verified on October 3, 2026; YouTube does not display a publication year for the page.
| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations as a starting range for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then verify the stream on your actual connection. YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate, but a speed test is only a snapshot; leave headroom for variation and judge stability during a realistic stream. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, not a guarantee. Do not set the bitrate to the highest value in YouTube’s range unless your connection can sustain it.

When to lower bitrate
If the network dropped-frame counter rises, lower the bitrate in OBS Output settings and test again. Keep lowering it until the connection holds steadily, while staying within YouTube’s guidance for the selected output where practical. If the available stable upload cannot support the desired resolution and frame rate, use a lower output rather than forcing an unsustainable bitrate.
Choose a resolution and frame rate your PC and upload can sustain
For a constrained setup, compare 1080p with 720p and 60 fps with 30 fps. The right choice depends on all three of these checks: YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that output, stable upload during the test, and healthy OBS rendering and encoding counters.

| Choice | What changes | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p to 720p | Less image detail, with a lower bitrate target available | When the upload cannot steadily carry the 1080p target, or the PC is overloaded |
| 60 fps to 30 fps | Less smooth motion, with reduced processing work | When rendering or encoding lag persists at 60 fps; OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working |
Change the output resolution or frame rate in OBS video settings, then test again. If the rendering or encoding counter improves after reducing output load, that points to local performance pressure. If only network drops improve after lowering bitrate, the connection was the branch to address. OBS system requirements warn that a compatible system does not guarantee streaming capability; CPU needs depend on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Without your PC specifications and an OBS log, a specific upgrade recommendation would be guesswork.
Set YouTube-compatible output and ingest options
For YouTube live ingest, use a supported RTMP or RTMPS connection; YouTube recommends RTMPS. Set rate control to CBR and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube specifies no more than 4 seconds between keyframes; its error guidance expresses the two-second interval at 30 fps as one keyframe every 60 frames. Match the bitrate to the selected resolution and frame rate, then test and monitor YouTube’s stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and its live streaming error guide.

YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. Consequently, a viewer’s buffering and OBS’s network, rendering, or encoding counters are not interchangeable diagnoses. YouTube’s stream-health status can help identify ingest trouble, while OBS Stats show whether the sender is dropping frames or falling behind locally. YouTube’s stream status guidance explains stream health.

Work through network instability in India
There is no single India-specific OBS bitrate established by the official platform and software guidance. ISP, connection type, time-of-day congestion, route, Wi-Fi conditions, and your measured stable upload all matter. Test the connection you will actually use to stream rather than relying on a plan’s advertised speed.

- If you use Wi-Fi: test closer to the router or try a wired Ethernet connection. Ethernet is relevant to diagnosed connection instability, not rendering or encoding lag.
- If the ingest route appears unstable: try another available YouTube server/ingest option in OBS and compare the network dropped-frame counter during a test.
- Check traffic-affecting software: temporarily investigate VPNs, security software, bundled network utilities, and outdated network drivers as possible causes. Change only one item per test.
- Retest under realistic conditions: use the scene, output settings, and network conditions you intend to use live; record the OBS counters and YouTube stream health.
Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Record a baseline: note resolution, frame rate, bitrate, encoder, connection type, and which OBS Stats counter increases.
- Follow the matching branch: for network drops, test a lower bitrate, a different ingest server, or a wired connection if currently on Wi-Fi. For rendering or encoding lag, reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, and reduce competing GPU work.
- Keep YouTube settings aligned: use CBR, RTMPS where available, and a two-second keyframe interval, with a bitrate appropriate to the chosen output and stable upload.
- Change one variable and repeat: note which counter changes. This avoids mistaking a coincidental improvement for a fix.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback: OBS can lower bitrate during congestion to reduce network drops, but OBS says this does not fix the underlying cause and can reduce stream quality.
Common symptoms and what to try
| Symptom | Likely branch | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped Frames (Network) increases | Connection instability or bitrate beyond sustainable upload | Lower bitrate, test the upload under streaming conditions, try another ingest server, and investigate Wi-Fi or traffic-affecting software |
| Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag increases | Scene rendering or GPU workload | Simplify the scene, reduce output resolution or frame rate, reduce competing GPU work; on Windows try running OBS as administrator |
| Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag increases | Encoding workload | Reduce resolution or frame rate and simplify the workload; consult the OBS performance guide for the selected encoder |
| OBS counters look healthy, but viewers report buffering | Not enough evidence to identify an OBS-side frame-drop cause | Check YouTube stream health and viewer playback on another connection or device; do not assume the symptom means an OBS counter is rising |
