Fix a modded Steam Deck game by changing one reversible variable at a time: update and restart the Deck, establish whether the failure is limited to one game or affects Steam more broadly, test the unmodded game, then isolate mods, compatibility settings, and the launcher. Treat visual glitches separately according to where they appear, and collect a Proton log if the launch failure persists.
Start by preserving evidence and making the problem reproducible
Do not begin by deleting files or changing several compatibility settings at once. First write down the game, SteamOS update state, selected compatibility tool, mod manager or loader, the last mod you installed or updated, and the exact error text. If the problem is visual, take a screenshot before changing anything. A before-and-after record lets you identify the setting that helped and restore the original configuration if a test makes the game worse.

Record the launch path
- Note whether you start the title directly from Steam, through a mod manager, or through a separate loader.
- Record the Proton or other Steam Play tool shown for the game.
- List recent changes in order: SteamOS update, game update, mod installation, mod update, manager update, and graphics-setting change.
- Copy the complete error instead of paraphrasing it. The community search phrase Error launching game, compatibility tool failed describes a symptom, not a diagnosis; a discussion using that wording is available on Reddit.
Classify the symptom before choosing a fix
Use the failure’s scope and location to choose the next branch. These tests narrow the possibilities; they do not prove a root cause by themselves.

Apply the reversible Steam Deck checks first
Valve’s first-line procedure is deliberately simple because system updates, a restart, or a conflicting desktop application can affect every game. In its Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide, Valve writes: “To address issues with system instability, install any available system updates (Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates) and restart your Steam Deck (from the Software Updates section or via Steam > Power > Restart).”

- In Game Mode, open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install every available SteamOS update. Allow the update to finish before testing the game.
- Restart from the Software Updates screen or use Steam > Power > Restart. A full restart is more useful for this test than merely closing and reopening the game.
- If you installed or run third-party desktop applications in Desktop Mode, exit or temporarily disable them. Restart once more, then retest the game. Restore those applications after the test if they are not involved.
These actions are safe starting points because they do not alter a mod list or force a new Proton version. If several Steam applications still fail after them, follow the system-oriented path in Valve’s guide and seek Steam Deck support rather than assuming every failure is caused by a mod.
Determine whether the fault is the game, the mod path, or the Deck
Test another Steam game
Launch an unrelated game that has not been modified. If it also crashes or refuses to start, the problem is broader than the recently changed title. Continue with SteamOS, restart, and system-app checks, and prepare a report for Valve. If the other game works, keep the investigation centered on the affected title and its launch path.
Test the base game safely
For the affected title, make sure your save and mod configuration can be preserved, then disable the full mod set or use the game’s supported unmodded mode. Do not overwrite a save that depends on mod content unless the game’s documentation explains how to do so safely. A clean base-game launch separates a title or Proton problem from a mod or loader problem:

- If the unmodded game also fails, check the title’s compatibility requirements, files and settings, and the selected Proton tool before blaming a particular mod.
- If the unmodded game launches, the newly changed mod, the load order, the loader, or the manager becomes the more useful next area to test.
Test the launch path itself
Start the game directly from Steam when possible, then through the manager or loader. A direct launch that works while the managed launch fails points toward the manager, its configured runtime, or its injected loader. Conversely, a failure in both paths means the manager is not the only variable. Keep the path and result in your notes so later tests remain comparable.

Isolate mods without guessing
Roll back the newest change first
Temporarily disable the most recently installed or updated mod and launch again. If the crash or visual defect disappears, leave that mod disabled while you confirm its version, dependencies, load order, and game compatibility. If nothing changes, disable the complete mod set and test the base game; this establishes a clean reference point.
Re-enable in small groups
When the base game works, re-enable a small, documented group of mods and launch. Continue in groups until the failure returns, then divide the failing group and test each half. This binary-search approach identifies an interaction without requiring dozens of full launches. Record each group and result; do not change Proton or graphics settings during the isolation pass.
Update according to the game developer’s guidance
Check the game developer’s mod instructions for supported versions, dependencies, load order, and save handling. Larian Studios’ Mod Issues guidance, for example, recommends distinguishing a game issue from a mod issue and keeping mods updated. Its advice is specific to that publisher’s games, but the diagnostic principle applies generally: use the title’s own requirements instead of assuming that a manager’s installation success proves runtime compatibility.

Do not transfer Windows assumptions to Linux/Proton
A mod that works on Windows may depend on a loader, executable, path, or graphics behavior that differs under Linux and Proton. SteamTinkerLaunch’s documentation explicitly says it does not guarantee mod compatibility on Linux. A mod appearing in a supported manager is therefore evidence that it can be installed, not proof that it will launch or render correctly on a Steam Deck.

Check Deck Verified status and Proton deliberately
Read the game’s stated requirements
Open Valve’s Deck Verified information and the game’s Steam listing. Check the rating category and every requirement attached to it, including text-entry, launcher, performance, or control notes. The rating describes Valve’s tested experience for the game; it does not certify every third-party mod, loader, or manager combination.
Compare the default tool with one specific Proton version
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties and select Compatibility.
- Note whether Steam is using the default compatibility setting. If it is, record that choice before testing.
- Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and select one Proton version appropriate to the title. Change only this setting.
- Launch once, record the result, and revert to the original setting if the test is worse. Try another version only after documenting the first result.
Valve recommends trying the latest Proton version for some Steam-app problems, while a particular game or mod loader may require title-specific handling. Treat a Proton change as a controlled experiment, not a universal upgrade. Valve also notes that forcing a Windows version can cause Steam to download that version if only the Linux build is installed, so allow for an additional download and do not interpret it as evidence that the mod itself changed.
Keep SteamTinkerLaunch configuration in its proper place
If you use SteamTinkerLaunch and the game will not start through it, verify that its configured Proton version is valid and that SteamTinkerLaunch is selected as the game’s compatibility tool as its documentation expects. Do not put that tool selection in the game’s launch-options field unless the tool’s instructions specifically require it. Inspect the SteamTinkerLaunch log for a tool-specific failure, and compare the result with a direct launch. These checks apply to SteamTinkerLaunch setups, not to every mod manager.

That message can appear when Steam cannot start the selected Proton path, when a launcher or manager fails before the game window opens, or when a recently changed mod prevents the process from reaching the menu. It does not identify which layer failed. Use the scope tests above, then compare direct and managed launches before changing tools.

- If the base game launches directly but the manager path does not, inspect the manager’s configured Proton and runtime first.
- If neither path launches but another Steam game does, test the default compatibility setting, then one specific Proton version, reverting between tests.
- If several Steam games fail, stop rotating Proton versions for one title and return to SteamOS updates, restart, desktop-app checks, and Valve support.
Separate in-game rendering defects from manager-window glitches
When the game itself looks wrong
Identify whether the issue is a low frame rate, missing textures, flickering, incorrect lighting, or another in-game rendering problem. First lower the game’s graphics preset or individual settings, as Valve suggests for graphics and performance trouble. Change one setting at a time and note whether the defect changes. If only a modded scene or asset is affected, return to the mod-isolation procedure rather than lowering every Deck setting.
When the launcher, overlay, or manager window is wrong
A blank, frozen, or crashing manager window is a different failure from a game that renders incorrectly. Test the game without that window, then identify the application that owns the defective surface. SteamTinkerLaunch documents a narrow Mod Organizer 2 issue in Game Mode and a workaround involving its Proton options and the Steam Linux Runtime. Use the instructions on its Mod Organizer 2 page only when your symptom matches that report; it is not evidence that every visual glitch has the same cause.
Check overlays separately
If the game is playable until an overlay opens, reproduce the problem with the overlay closed and with the manager disabled. A defect that exists only in an overlay should be reported to the component that draws it, while a defect visible in the game without overlays belongs in the game, Proton, or mod branch. Keep the test conditions constant so a changing window state is not mistaken for a graphics fix.
Capture a Proton log when the launch failure remains
After the reversible checks and controlled mod and Proton tests, create evidence that another person can analyze. Valve’s Proton FAQ documents the launch option PROTON_LOG=1 %command%.
- Open the game’s Steam Properties and go to the launch-options field.
- Enter
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%exactly, without adding a second command on the same test. - Launch the game once and reproduce the failure.
- Save the generated log and remove the option after collecting it unless a support contact asks you to keep logging enabled.
Include the log with a concise report containing the game name, SteamOS update state, Proton version, mod manager or loader, launch path, mods most recently changed, exact error text, and a screenshot of any visual defect. State which tests succeeded: another Steam game, the unmodded title, a direct launch, and each Proton setting you tried. This prevents a maintainer from repeating tests you already completed.
Escalate to the right support channel
Use Valve’s general troubleshooting guide first. If its checks do not resolve a Steam Deck issue, the guide points to Steam Deck discussions and Steam Support. A title-specific mod failure is also appropriate for the game publisher’s support channel when you can provide the supported mod version and reproduction steps. A manager-specific failure belongs with that project’s maintainers, accompanied by its log and the exact manager version.
Do not report only that the game “doesn’t work.” A useful report says whether the base game launches, whether another Steam game launches, where the visual defect appears, which compatibility tool was selected, what changed immediately beforehand, and whether disabling the newest mod changed the result. That scope information lets support distinguish a system problem from a title, manager, or mod interaction.

Restore a working configuration and prevent a repeat
- Once a test works, keep the successful setting unchanged and write down the exact Proton tool, manager path, and enabled mod group.
- Re-enable additional mods in small groups, launching between groups. Stop at the first reproducible failure and leave that group disabled.
- If a Proton experiment did not help, return to the original compatibility choice rather than leaving an unverified override in place.
- Keep a dated note of mod and manager versions so a future game update can be compared with the last known-good setup.
- Preserve saves and mod configuration before major changes, and follow the game publisher’s instructions for removing content that a save depends on.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing several variables at once: switching Proton, removing mods, changing graphics, and updating a manager in one pass removes the evidence needed to identify the cause.
- Assuming scope proves cause: one failing title suggests a title-specific branch, while several failing apps suggest a system branch, but neither observation is conclusive.
- Treating Deck Verified as a mod guarantee: Valve’s rating concerns the game’s tested experience, not every external loader or mod combination.
- Assuming manager support equals Linux compatibility: installation through a manager does not guarantee that the mod runs under Linux/Proton.
- Forcing a Proton version indefinitely: a specific tool is a test result, not automatically the best permanent setting for every title.
- Using a tool-specific workaround for a different symptom: the SteamTinkerLaunch and Mod Organizer 2 Game Mode workaround is narrow; confirm that your window behavior matches the documented issue first.
- Reporting without configuration details: exact versions, launch path, recent changes, and a Proton log are more useful than a screenshot of a generic error alone.
The available official and project documentation provides procedures and selected known issues, not a population-wide success rate or a reliable percentage of Steam Deck mod failures. Judge the result from your controlled tests and preserve the evidence if you need to escalate.
