How to Troubleshoot Common ASUS Laptop Problems

A model-aware guide to ASUS laptop charging, fan, display, keyboard and Windows problems—with safe first checks, diagnostic options and signs to seek service.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by identifying the exact symptom and your ASUS laptop’s model, then try reversible checks before changing drivers, resetting Windows or arranging service. Charging, cooling, display and keyboard behavior vary by model; a fix that applies to one ASUS laptop may not apply to another.

Before troubleshooting: identify the symptom and model

Write down what the laptop is doing: for example, whether it will not power on, will not charge, gets hot, has a loud fan, shows a distorted internal display, has keys that do not respond, or freezes after Windows starts. These are different problems and should not be treated as one general “laptop issue.”

Find the exact model name or number and Windows version. Use the model’s manual and ASUS support information when a step depends on a port, BIOS menu, driver or hardware configuration. ASUS’s Laptop FAQ index is organized by symptom and includes additional categories such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, storage, sound and camera. Those issues need their matching guidance; the steps below do not establish fixes for them.

Before changing anything, note when the problem began and what changed shortly beforehand. A new peripheral, application, driver or Windows update can help narrow down a freeze or other fault. Do not guess at a BIOS key, download a driver for a similar-looking model, or select a replacement charger or battery without checking the exact laptop’s requirements.

Kootek Laptop Cooling Pad Cooler Stand with 5 Quiet Fans for 12"-17" Laptop
  • Dual USB Hub: With a built-in dual USB hub, the laptop fan enables you to connect additional USB devices to your laptop, providing extra connectivity options for your peripherals. Warm tips: The packaged cable is a USB-to-USB connection. Type C connection devices require a Type C to USB adapter. • Whisper-Quiet Operation: Enjoy a noise-free and interference-free environment with super quiet fans, allowing you to focus on your work or entertainment without distractions.
  • Enhanced Cooling Performance: The laptop cooling pad features 5 built-in fans (big fan: 4.72-inch, small fans: 2.76-inch), all with blue LEDs. 2 On/Off switches enable simultaneous control of all 5 fans and LEDs. Simply press the switch to select 1 fan working, 4 fans working, or all 5 working together.
  • Ergonomic Design: The laptop cooling stand also serves as an ergonomic stand, offering 6 adjustable height settings that enable you to customize the angle for optimal comfort during gaming, movie watching, or working for extended periods. Ideal gift for both the back-to-school season and Father's Day.
  • Secure and Universal Compatibility: Designed with 2 stoppers on the front surface, this laptop cooler prevents laptops from slipping and keeps 12-17 inch laptops—including Apple Macbook Pro Air, HP, Alienware, Dell, ASUS, and more—cool and secure during use.

Keep a short record as you work: whether the fault occurs on battery power or AC power, whether it appears before Windows loads, and any message or diagnostic code shown. That evidence is more useful to support staff than a description such as “it just stopped working.” Take a photo of a warning message if the screen is unstable, and record the model’s serial information through the official support channel rather than posting it publicly.

Choose the next step by risk and evidence

Work from checks that are easy to reverse toward steps that can change Windows or require service. The table distinguishes what each option can tell you; it is not a promise that every tool appears on every laptop.

Option Best fit Does Windows need to run? Availability and risk
Visual and connection checks Charging, airflow, disconnected devices No Low risk and reversible. Check the manual before assuming a particular port supports charging.
MyASUS System Diagnosis Hardware symptoms such as battery, fan, keyboard or storage trouble Usually, to open MyASUS System Diagnosis and individual tests vary by model. ASUS lists checks that can include adapter, memory, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDD/SSD, battery, fan, keyboard, touchpad, display and USB.
UEFI BIOS System Diagnostics Hardware checks when Windows will not run No ASUS states eligibility for laptops with Intel 12th-generation-or-later or AMD Ryzen 6000-series-or-later processors. The support article was updated 2024-06-17; availability of regional services can vary.
Windows or driver changes A problem that began after an update or software change Yes Updating, reinstalling or rolling back software changes settings. Follow the instructions for the exact model and Windows version.
Windows restore or reset Persistent software symptoms after earlier steps Generally, to start the Windows recovery route A restore point changes system state; resetting can affect personal files and settings. Back up important files before reset.
Authorized service Evidence of a failed fan or internal display hardware, or physical damage No Appropriate when a hardware fault is indicated. Service options vary by country.

MyASUS tests can help distinguish a reported component problem from a symptom that calls for software troubleshooting. A UEFI test is a separate option for eligible machines when Windows is unavailable; it is not a feature to assume every ASUS laptop has. Record the diagnostic result and any suggested action rather than repeatedly running unrelated tests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare every proposed action on five questions: Does it match this symptom? Is it reversible? Must Windows boot? Is the feature present on this model? Does the evidence point to software or hardware? A reversible connection check scores well on all five, while a reset or physical repair is more consequential. That comparison helps prevent an unnecessary purchase or data-destructive recovery step.

ASUS laptop will not charge, charges slowly or drains while plugged in

Check the power path first

  1. Disconnect and firmly reconnect the adapter at the wall outlet, the adapter itself if its cord detaches, and the laptop. Check the cable and adapter for visible damage. Do not use equipment with damaged wiring.
  2. Use the original ASUS adapter where available. ASUS recommends it to avoid compatibility issues. A replacement must match the exact model’s power requirements; without the model, there is no safe universal wattage or charger recommendation.
  3. If charging over USB-C, check the manual for the exact laptop and port. A USB-C connector does not by itself mean that the port accepts power for charging.
  4. If the laptop runs, follow the model’s ASUS instructions to update BIOS, Windows and drivers as applicable. ASUS also lists a BIOS reset as a possible step in its charging guidance; do not use a generic key sequence or reset procedure.
  5. Run the MyASUS battery diagnosis if that feature is available. If the problem is slow charging or battery drain while plugged in, compare charging behavior in Windows Safe Mode with normal Windows operation. ASUS suggests this comparison because applications may consume power.

A difference between Safe Mode and normal operation is useful evidence that software or running applications may be contributing; it does not by itself establish that the battery or adapter is healthy. If the laptop cannot start, an adapter or battery test is unavailable in Windows, or a supported diagnostic reports a fault, use the model’s official support route rather than buying a guessed replacement.

Slow charging while the laptop is busy can be different from a complete failure to charge. Gaming, video editing and other demanding applications can consume power while the adapter is connected. Close unnecessary applications, compare the result in Safe Mode, and note whether the battery percentage rises, stays level or falls. Do not infer that a USB-C power bank is suitable unless ASUS specifies the required charging standard and power for that model.

If charging stops at a particular percentage, check the model’s battery-health or charging-limit feature in MyASUS before assuming a defect. Availability and names vary, so use the current manual. A battery that is swollen, unusually hot or physically damaged is not a software troubleshooting case; stop using it and arrange professional service.

ASUS laptop is hot, the fan is loud or the fan seems inactive

Decide whether the behavior matches the workload

Gaming, video editing, conversion and other demanding work can raise CPU or GPU temperature, prompting the fan to run faster and sound louder. ASUS Global Support explains that the fan circulates air to help maintain a stable operating temperature. A fan may not run when the laptop is below its activation threshold, and some ASUS models are passively cooled and have no fan.

Restore airflow before changing settings

  1. Place the laptop on a firm, flat surface. Keep every ventilation opening clear and leave space around the vents.
  2. Check the model’s vent layout. Exhaust may be at the sides or near the screen hinge; do not cover an opening just because it is not obvious from the front.
  3. Look for dust, hair or debris obstructing a vent or fan. Do not push objects into an opening or attempt an internal cleaning procedure without model-specific instructions.
  4. If helpful, use a stand or cooling pad to elevate the laptop. ASUS presents elevation as an airflow and placement aid, not a repair for a failed fan or a guarantee of lower temperatures.
  5. Check whether the model provides fan modes. MyASUS options vary by model; ROG and TUF gaming laptops use Armoury Crate for fan adjustment, while ProArt models use ProArt Creator Hub.
  6. Run MyASUS fan diagnosis if available. If it reports a fan problem, ASUS recommends contacting an ASUS service center.

ASUS lists an ambient operating range of 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F) in its overheating guidance and advises checking the product manual. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, not a measurement of your laptop’s internal temperature or a diagnosis of a particular heat problem.

Fan noise that rises briefly during a heavy task can be normal. Noise that begins at idle, accompanies shutdowns or continues after the workload ends deserves closer attention. Check whether the sound is airflow, a grinding or clicking noise, or vibration from the surface; those observations help service staff, but do not justify opening the machine without model-specific instructions.

ASUS laptop screen flickers, looks blurry or distorted, or goes blank

Separate an in-use display fault from a black screen at startup

A black screen immediately after power-on is not the same symptom as flickering, blur or distortion that appears while using Windows. Do not merge them into one fix: identify when the screen goes blank and use the matching model-specific ASUS guidance. The display check below is for an abnormal internal display while troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use BIOS as a software-versus-hardware clue

  1. Check whether the same display fault appears in BIOS, using the model’s official instructions to enter BIOS.
  2. If the fault persists in BIOS, ASUS says the screen hardware may be defective and recommends an authorized repair center.
  3. If the BIOS display is normal, investigate Windows and graphics-driver causes. Where a driver is needed, use the ASUS support page for the exact model and follow its installation instructions.

This comparison helps direct the next step; it does not identify which component is defective. Do not treat a screen that is physically damaged as a software problem or expect a driver update to repair physical damage.

Note whether the fault changes when the lid angle changes or when an external display is used, but avoid forcing the hinge or repeatedly reconnecting cables. The BIOS comparison remains the supported dividing line in ASUS’s guidance. If the internal fault is visible there, preserve photographs or video of the symptom and provide them to the authorized center.

ASUS laptop keyboard keys do not work or behave oddly

Match the symptom before changing settings

  • Characters appear after a delay: check whether Filter Keys is enabled.
  • A character repeats: review the key-repeat delay setting.
  • Some keys produce number-pad-like characters: check NumLock.
  • One or more keys do not respond: proceed to Windows, driver and diagnostic checks.

Try Windows and driver steps in order

  1. Install relevant Windows updates and model-appropriate drivers using ASUS’s instructions.
  2. Run the Windows keyboard troubleshooter.
  3. If the problem remains, reinstall the keyboard device driver using the applicable Windows and ASUS guidance.
  4. If the issue began recently, consider whether restoring Windows to a restore point from before the problem could help. A restore point changes system state; use the Windows recovery instructions for your version.
  5. Consider PC reset only after the earlier steps. Back up personal files first: ASUS explicitly warns users to do so before reset.

If available, MyASUS keyboard diagnosis can add component-level evidence. A software reset is not a substitute for service if the keyboard has physical damage or a hardware diagnostic indicates a fault.

Test several affected keys and note whether the issue occurs only in one application or throughout Windows. That distinction can separate an application setting from a system-wide keyboard problem. Avoid prying off keycaps or spilling cleaning liquid into the keyboard; physical inspection and part replacement should follow the exact model’s service guidance.

ASUS laptop freezes, crashes or becomes unresponsive in Windows

Recover from an unresponsive screen

If the screen is frozen and the laptop does not respond, ASUS’s freeze guidance says to hold the power button until the light turns off, then restart. This is a forced shutdown rather than a normal save-and-close process, so unsaved work may be lost.

Isolate likely causes

  1. Disconnect external peripherals and restart. ASUS notes that connected devices can cause malfunction.
  2. Think back to whether the problem started after installing a driver, app or Windows update. If so, consider removing or rolling back that change through the appropriate Windows instructions.
  3. Update BIOS, Windows and drivers using the official instructions for the exact model. Avoid a guessed BIOS procedure.
  4. If MyASUS is supported, run hardware diagnosis and record any reported issue.
  5. Consider whether high internal temperature may be reducing performance. Check the laptop’s placement and ventilation using the cooling steps above.

A freeze can have more than one possible cause. A diagnostic result, timing of the first failure and whether the issue changes after disconnecting devices or rolling back a recent change provide more useful evidence than repeating the same forced shutdown.

If Windows remains usable long enough, save work and back up important files before experimenting with recovery. If the freeze occurs before Windows starts, use only diagnostics supported by the model, such as eligible UEFI checks, and do not assume that a Windows driver rollback can address a pre-boot hardware fault.

Other ASUS laptop symptoms

ASUS’s FAQ index links to separate guidance for Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, HDD/SSD storage, sound, camera and other functions. Start with the matching symptom article and the exact model manual. A wireless problem, for example, may require different evidence from a storage warning; the charging, cooling and display procedures above should not be substituted for those instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For any category, first identify whether the function fails in Windows only or also outside Windows, disconnect newly added accessories, and record recent updates. Then use MyASUS tests if the relevant test is present. This keeps the process model-aware without assuming that an option shown on one ASUS family exists on another.

Protect files before recovery or updates

Back up important files before a Windows reset or other recovery step that may change or remove them. ASUS’s keyboard guidance specifically places backup before PC reset. Keep recovery options available before starting a BIOS or Windows update, too: ASUS’s MyASUS guidance warns that Windows Update can lead to a BitLocker recovery prompt and recommends saving the recovery key or disabling BitLocker before the update.

Do not proceed if you cannot access the required recovery key or do not understand what a reset will change. Check the official instructions for your Windows version and laptop model first.

When to stop and seek service

  • MyASUS fan diagnosis reports a problem: ASUS recommends service through an ASUS service center.
  • The internal-screen fault also appears in BIOS: ASUS recommends an authorized repair center because the screen hardware may be defective.
  • A component test reports a fault, or there is visible physical damage: preserve the result and contact ASUS support or an authorized service provider for your region.
  • You cannot establish that a charger, battery, part or procedure matches the exact model: do not guess; confirm compatibility through the model manual or ASUS support.
  • The battery or adapter is swollen, burning hot or visibly damaged: stop using it and seek professional assistance rather than continuing software tests.

Diagnostic features, instructions and service availability can differ by model, Windows version and region. ASUS support pages reviewed for this guide displayed update dates ranging from 2024-06-17 to 2026-09-08; menus and procedures may change. Use the current support material for the precise laptop rather than assuming an older instruction applies unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my ASUS laptop not charging?

Check the wall, adapter and laptop connections, inspect for damage, and use the original ASUS adapter when possible. USB-C charging is model- and port-specific. Update BIOS, Windows and drivers only with the exact model’s instructions, then run MyASUS battery diagnosis if available. For slow charging, compare Safe Mode with normal Windows because applications may consume power. Do not buy a replacement charger or battery without confirming the model’s power requirements.

Why is my ASUS laptop overheating and the fan so loud?

Demanding work such as gaming or video conversion can normally increase fan speed. Put the laptop on a firm, flat surface, keep side and hinge vents clear, and check for dust or debris without inserting objects. A stand or cooling pad can improve placement but cannot repair a failed fan. Fan controls vary: MyASUS, Armoury Crate and ProArt Creator Hub apply to different model families. If MyASUS fan diagnosis reports a failure, contact ASUS service.

Why is my ASUS laptop screen flickering or black?

First distinguish a black screen immediately after power-on from flicker or distortion that begins in Windows. Check whether the same internal-display fault appears in BIOS. A fault visible in BIOS may indicate defective screen hardware, for which ASUS recommends an authorized repair center. If BIOS looks normal, investigate Windows and graphics drivers using the exact model’s ASUS support page.

Why is my ASUS laptop keyboard not working?

Check Filter Keys for delayed characters, key-repeat settings for repeated characters and NumLock for number-pad-like output. Then install applicable Windows and ASUS updates, run the Windows keyboard troubleshooter and reinstall the keyboard device driver if needed. A recent problem may respond to a restore point. Back up personal files before considering PC reset, and seek service for physical damage or a failed component test.

Why does my ASUS laptop keep freezing?

Disconnect external peripherals and restart. Note whether the freeze began after a driver, application or Windows update, and consider an appropriate rollback. Update BIOS, Windows and drivers with model-specific instructions, run MyASUS hardware diagnosis when supported, and check airflow if the machine is hot. Holding the power button to force shutdown can lose unsaved work; use it only when the laptop is unresponsive.

Can every ASUS laptop use MyASUS or UEFI diagnostics?

No. MyASUS System Diagnosis and its individual adapter, memory, battery, fan, display and other tests vary by model. ASUS states that UEFI BIOS System Diagnostics is available on laptops with Intel 12th-generation-or-later or AMD Ryzen 6000-series-or-later processors, with regional differences possible. Check the exact model’s support page.

Should I reset Windows to fix an ASUS laptop problem?

Treat reset as a later software-recovery option, not a first step. Try connection checks, supported drivers, troubleshooters, restore points and diagnostics first. A reset can affect files and settings, so back up personal data and make sure you can access BitLocker recovery information before proceeding.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact ASUS model, start with reversible checks, and use MyASUS or eligible UEFI diagnostics to gather evidence. USB-C charging, fan controls and diagnostic menus are not universal. A display fault visible in BIOS, a reported fan failure, physical damage or an incompatible replacement part is a reason to stop guessing and contact ASUS or an authorized service provider.
