If Classic Outlook for Windows started freezing, crashing, or failing to sync after a Microsoft 365 update, first check Microsoft’s current known-issues tracker and note your installed Office build. Timing alone does not prove the update caused the problem. Then work through reversible checks—updates, Safe Mode, add-ins, and a test profile—before repairing data files or Office.
Make sure you are troubleshooting Classic Outlook
Classic Outlook for Windows is the desktop app with the traditional Outlook interface. Microsoft maintains separate guidance for it and new Outlook for Windows. Its Classic Outlook troubleshooters do not apply to new Outlook.

Before changing settings, write down when the problem began, what changed, the exact error text, and what Outlook is doing: for example, whether it will not start, hangs at “Processing,” crashes and opens in Safe Mode, or has trouble with sending, syncing, search, calendar, or a particular add-in. Those details help distinguish a documented issue from a problem that merely followed an update.

Check Microsoft’s known-issues tracker first
Open Microsoft’s Classic Outlook known-issues tracker. Find the entry that matches both your symptom and, where available, the relevant update month. Read its status—such as fixed, investigating, or workaround—and follow only the steps Microsoft gives for that issue. The tracker changes over time, so check the live entry rather than relying on an old status or workaround.

If there is no close match, continue with general troubleshooting. A shared symptom such as “not responding” does not by itself identify a cause; add-ins, a damaged profile, a data-file error, or an Office installation problem can produce similar behavior.
Record the Office build and install available updates
Compare your installed Office build with any version details in the matching Microsoft issue report. To see Outlook’s version and build, open File > Office Account and select About Outlook. If the app will not open, check the installed Microsoft 365 or Office version through the available Office account or Windows app settings.

Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for both Windows and Microsoft 365/Office updates. Install applicable updates, restart Windows, and test Outlook again. If you are checking a specific reported problem, note your Office update channel if it is shown; a workaround for one build or add-in combination may not apply to another.

Safe Mode starts Classic Outlook without add-ins loaded. Microsoft recommends it as a diagnostic test for hangs, freezes, and startup problems.

- Enter
outlook.exe /safeand press Enter. - Try the action that normally triggers the problem. If the issue disappears in Safe Mode, an add-in may be involved.
- In normal Outlook, open File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, next to Manage, choose COM Add-ins, then select Go.
- Clear an add-in’s checkbox to disable it for diagnosis, restart Outlook, and test. If needed, re-enable add-ins one at a time, restarting after each, to identify a likely conflict.
Disable an add-in rather than deleting it. Microsoft notes that add-ins can conflict with Classic Outlook, but a Safe Mode result does not name the responsible add-in on its own.
Test a new Outlook profile
A new profile helps determine whether the problem is tied to the existing Outlook profile. Create one using Microsoft’s Outlook troubleshooting guidance, then open Outlook with that profile and test the same task. If the new profile resolves the problem, Microsoft identifies the original profile as corrupted and the source of the issue.

For an email-connection problem, Microsoft also documents a profile repair path: File > Account Settings > Account Settings > Email, select the account, then choose Repair. Microsoft says this Repair option is unavailable in Outlook 2016 when connecting to Exchange. See Fix your Outlook email connection by repairing your profile for the applicable instructions.
Repair a data file only when the symptom points to one
If Outlook reports a data-file error or other evidence points to a damaged Outlook data file, Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool, scanpst.exe, can scan and repair data files. Use Microsoft’s instructions in its general troubleshooting guide to locate and run the tool. It is not a general-purpose fix for every crash, add-in conflict, or update-related problem.

Repair Microsoft 365 or Office if earlier checks fail
If updates, Safe Mode, add-in isolation, and profile testing have not resolved the problem—and the symptoms suggest damaged Office program files—Microsoft recommends trying Office Quick Repair first. If Quick Repair does not help, try Online Repair. These options are available through Windows’ installed-app or Programs and Features settings; select Microsoft 365 or Office, choose Modify, and follow the repair options shown.
Repair is a later troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for every issue that appears after an update. Microsoft also lists Online Repair as a workaround in one specific documented crash incident.
Keep the March 2026 Teams add-in workaround specific
Microsoft documented one narrowly defined case: Classic Outlook crashing and prompting to start in Safe Mode beginning around March 12, 2026. In its issue report, last updated March 27, 2026, Microsoft associated the problem with older Outlook builds and Teams Meeting Add-in build 1.26.02603. The report gives Current Channel Version 2402, Build 17328.20142 or lower as an example, marks the issue fixed, and recommends updating Outlook to the latest build.

For users who had to remain on an older Office build, Microsoft listed temporarily disabling the Teams Meeting Add-in as a workaround; Online Repair was another option. Apply those steps only if your symptoms and versions match the documented incident. They are not a universal remedy for Outlook problems after an update. Choose the next step based on what the test shows

If none of these checks resolves the issue, keep the exact error, Office build, update channel if available, account type, and results of your tests. Those details are more useful for support than the update timing alone, which cannot establish the cause.
