Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst identify whether the user is failing to authenticate to Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), or authenticating successfully but receiving a failed, empty, temporary, or unfamiliar desktop. Connection-time failures point to sign-in, assignment, or host-pool setup; a desktop that opens with the wrong profile points first to the session host, FSLogix configuration, identity, or storage access. Separating those stages helps avoid changing Conditional Access policy to fix a profile-attachment problem.
1. Identify where the sign-in fails
Ask what the user sees and when. An authentication error or repeated sign-in prompt before the desktop opens is a connection-time problem. A successful sign-in followed by a temporary or local profile, an empty desktop, or a profile that failed to attach is a post-authentication problem.

For repeated prompts or connection-time authentication errors, inspect Microsoft Entra sign-in logs for the affected user and the Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows Cloud Login applications. Record the AADSTS error code, Conditional Access result, and authentication details. Check that the host pool meets Microsoft’s SSO prerequisites before changing sign-in policy; a policy change will not repair a profile path or storage permission.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Verify that the user has access to the relevant AVD application group, and check that session-host setup is healthy. If authentication succeeds but the session does not establish a usable desktop, investigate the host and profile path rather than assuming Conditional Access caused the failure.

3. Check the FSLogix profile configuration
On the session host, confirm that the FSLogix Profiles feature is enabled and that its configured storage location points to the intended share. Standard profile containers use VHDLocations; Cloud Cache uses CCDLocations. Compare the configured value with the actual share and container location rather than relying on the expected path from before migration.
Microsoft’s FSLogix troubleshooting guidance lists incorrect paths, missing access, profile locks, pre-existing local profiles, changes to naming settings, and storage exhaustion among causes of an old, temporary, local, or empty profile. Check those possibilities before creating, deleting, or manually moving a container.
4. Verify session-host access to profile storage
Check from the session host—not only from an administrator’s workstation—that the configured share resolves by name and is reachable over SMB. Then verify the permissions required by the storage platform, including applicable NTFS ACLs, share permissions, or Azure role-based access control (RBAC).

| Storage platform | Identity and access checks | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Azure NetApp Files | FSLogix profiles require Kerberos and authentication through AD DS or Microsoft Entra Domain Services. Confirm the directory identity and Kerberos configuration as well as share reachability and permissions. (Microsoft, Azure NetApp Files FSLogix guidance) | Validate capacity and performance against the deployment’s needs, and test expected concurrent-session and failover behavior. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal advantage over Azure Files. |
| Azure Files | Follow Azure Files’ identity and share-permission requirements; check that the session host can reach the share and that the user and host have the required access. (Microsoft, Azure Files FSLogix guidance) | Evaluate capacity and performance, and test expected concurrent-session and failover behavior. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal advantage over Azure NetApp Files. |
Storage selection depends on the organization’s identity and storage architecture. The documented requirements support checking the platform-specific configuration; they do not identify one option as the right choice for every AVD deployment.
5. Check for a locked or differently named container
An active session can keep a user’s profile container open. If the same user connects to another host while the container is locked, the second session may report a lock error or load a temporary profile. Check whether the user still has an active session before treating the profile as missing.
Migration-related changes to FSLogix naming settings can also make an existing container appear to be absent. Compare the configured values for FlipFlopProfileDirectoryName, SIDDirNameMatch, SIDDirNamePattern, VHDNameMatch, and VHDNamePattern with the folders and VHD names on the share. If the settings now point FSLogix to a different name or location, it may create a new, empty container while the user’s existing data remains at the old path. Preserve the old container while you identify the mismatch; do not delete it as a cleanup step.

6. Verify identity compatibility after migration
For hybrid identities, Microsoft’s AVD prerequisites require the user principal name (UPN) or security identifier (SID) to match across AD DS and Microsoft Entra ID. Verify which identity the session host and profile configuration use, and confirm that the migrated user maps to the expected account.
Microsoft’s FSLogix FAQ warns that a cloud-based SID on an Entra-joined computer can prevent a profile from loading. It also states: “FSLogix doesn’t provide a direct migration path from other roaming profile solutions.” Treat conversion from another profile technology as a separate migration task with a validated procedure, not as an assumption that an existing roaming profile will attach unchanged.
7. Check the April 2026 Kerberos compatibility warning
Microsoft’s current FSLogix troubleshooting pages warn that the April 2026 Windows Server update changes the default Kerberos encryption type from RC4 to AES-SHA1. An SMB share hosting FSLogix containers that has not been upgraded to AES-SHA1 may have access problems after that update; Microsoft says customers that have already upgraded are unaffected. If profile attachment began failing around the update, check both the share’s Kerberos encryption configuration and its update status. This is a targeted compatibility check, not evidence that every AVD deployment is affected.
8. Validate the repair with a test user
- Assign a test user to the relevant AVD application group and connect through the same host pool and session-host configuration as the affected users.
- During sign-in, observe whether FSLogix Apps Services appears, as described in Microsoft’s Azure Files FSLogix setup guidance.
- Check that the expected profile folder appears on the configured share and that the test session receives the intended profile.
- Account for any pre-existing local profile: the session may use it instead of the FSLogix container, so a successful desktop alone does not prove the container attached.
9. Escalate with useful evidence
If the documented FSLogix checks do not resolve the issue, Microsoft’s AVD troubleshooting overview directs administrators to open an Azure support request for Azure Virtual Desktop and select FSLogix as the problem type. Include the connection-time error code and sign-in details if applicable, relevant session-host and FSLogix logs, the identity type, the storage provider, and the observed path, reachability, and permission checks. This evidence helps distinguish an authentication failure from a host, identity, or profile-storage failure.
