Start by checking the HTTP status and response body: a file saved with a .png or .jpg extension may actually contain an ApiFlash error response. If the request succeeded, compare extracted page content with the screenshot, then check the URL, render-wait settings, authentication, headers, and cache state. A blank capture alone does not identify one cause; the target URL and response are needed to narrow it down.
1. Check whether the response is an image or an API error
Before changing browser timing, inspect the HTTP status code and response body. If your script saves every response as an image without checking the status, an error payload can look like a blank or corrupt screenshot.

| HTTP status | Documented meaning | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | Invalid parameters or a URL that cannot be captured. | Read the response body; ApiFlash says a 400 includes a meaningful error message. |
| 401 | Invalid or revoked access key. | Verify the key and ensure it has not been revoked. |
| 402 | Monthly quota exhausted. | Check quota usage and reset information. |
| 403 | Feature is not supported on the current plan. | Confirm the request does not use a plan-restricted feature. |
| 429 | Too many requests. | Reduce request frequency and check the documented throttling limits. |
| 500 | Internal capture failure. | Keep the status and response body for diagnosis; retry cautiously. |
For the exact meanings and response details, see the ApiFlash Screenshot API documentation. Do not treat a non-success response as a successfully rendered blank page.
2. Validate the request before diagnosing the target page
- Use a complete target URL with an
http://orhttps://scheme. - URL-encode the target URL when passing it as a query parameter.
- Send a valid
access_key. - ApiFlash accepts both GET and POST requests.
A malformed URL or invalid key can prevent capture regardless of the target page’s appearance in a normal browser. If you share a failing request for help, remove the access key and any private cookies or tokens.

3. Separate missing page content from a screenshot-rendering problem
ApiFlash can return extracted content alongside response data. Try response_type=json with extract_html=true and/or extract_text=true. The returned HTML or text is a useful comparison point:
- Content is present, image appears blank: the page content was available to the capture process, so investigate when the screenshot was taken and how the page was presented.
- Content is missing too: investigate the URL, page accessibility, authentication, and page behavior before assuming the image renderer alone is at fault.
This comparison narrows the possibilities but does not prove a particular cause. For the supported response options, consult the ApiFlash documentation.

4. Wait for the content you actually need
Choose an appropriate page-load condition
ApiFlash defaults wait_until to network_idle. The other documented choices are dom_loaded and page_loaded. A page that continues making network requests may not suit an idle-based wait; a faster condition may capture earlier, before the desired content appears. Test the available conditions against the target page rather than assuming one is always best.
Wait for a known element
If the missing content has a stable CSS selector, use wait_for to wait for that element. ApiFlash documents that capture aborts with an error if the selector does not match within 15 seconds. Confirm the selector is correct and that the element exists for the unauthenticated or authenticated view you requested.

Use a delay only when it addresses the page behavior
ApiFlash’s FAQ recommends delay for cases such as animations that need extra time. The documented maximum delay is 10 seconds; the documentation advises preferring wait_for or wait_until when they can express the readiness condition. A delay adds time but does not fix blocked access or a selector that never appears. See the ApiFlash FAQ for its guidance on waiting for page load and particular elements.
5. Isolate authentication and custom-header effects
A page that requires a session, token, or other access mechanism may not show the same content to an automated capture as it does in your signed-in browser. ApiFlash’s guide index covers approaches such as cookies, headers, signed tokens, and automated login: ApiFlash guides.

Test the URL without custom authentication settings where possible, then add the required cookies or headers one at a time. ApiFlash’s FAQ warns that custom headers apply to all requests and may block external fonts; it suggests self-hosting fonts or using cookies for authentication. Missing fonts alone do not establish why an entire capture is blank, but isolating header behavior can reveal whether a request-wide setting is interfering with page resources.

6. Rule out stale cache and account limits
Request a fresh capture
Use fresh=true to bypass an old screenshot when checking whether the current page state differs from a cached result.

Check quota and throttling signals
Successful capture responses include quota headers. ApiFlash’s dedicated quota endpoint reports the limit, remaining count, and reset time. A 402 indicates exhausted monthly quota; a 429 indicates excessive requests. The FAQ also documents a cap on repeated failed captures. Use the response headers and quota endpoint rather than repeatedly retrying a failing request.
7. A compact diagnostic sequence
- Record the HTTP status and response body; determine whether the response is a successful image or an error.
- Verify the full, encoded URL and valid access key.
- Request JSON with HTML or text extraction, then compare returned content with the image.
- Try an appropriate
wait_untilsetting or wait for a known selector; use a short delay only where needed. - Test access without custom headers, then add required authentication inputs individually.
- Set
fresh=trueand inspect quota headers or the quota endpoint if limits may be involved.
A diagnosis for a specific capture needs its target URL, sanitized request parameters, status and response body, and ideally both the returned image and extracted content. Without those, timing, access controls, headers, and cache remain possibilities rather than established causes.
