How to Schedule Seasonal Store Promo Videos in a YouTube Live Loop With OBS

To schedule seasonal store promos as a repeating YouTube Live broadcast, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, set OBS to loop one local video or a playlist, connect OBS with the event’s stream URL and key, then check the preview before going live. YouTube handles the event schedule; OBS handles playback and encoding. The documented workflow does not automatically switch playlists by date, so you must change the media or playlist yourself when the season changes.

Before you schedule the stream

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Encoder streaming is the option for broadcasts produced with software such as OBS. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance explains eligibility and encoder setup.
  • Have the seasonal promo video or videos saved locally on the computer running OBS. The documented OBS Media Source formats include MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM.
  • Use a computer that can run OBS and play the media reliably. The available guidance does not specify minimum computer hardware, so test your actual video and stream settings before the event.
  • Choose whether you want one clip to repeat, or a series of clips in a fixed or shuffled order. That choice determines which OBS source to use.

Schedule the YouTube Live event

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
  2. Choose to reuse prior settings or create a new stream, then enter the event’s title, description, visibility and other metadata. YouTube lets you share a scheduled event so viewers can set reminders.
  3. Open the event in Live Control Room and locate its stream URL and stream key. Copy both; OBS needs them to send the encoder feed to the right YouTube event. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast on your channel.

Set OBS to loop the promo

For one video: Media Source

  1. In OBS, select the scene that will show the promotion. In the Sources panel, add a Media Source.
  2. Choose the local promo file and enable Loop. The file will start again after playback finishes.
  3. Check the source in the OBS preview. Confirm that the correct seasonal version is selected and that its audio is suitable to repeat. If the source is hidden or the scene changes, verify that playback behaves as intended before relying on it during the event.

For multiple videos: VLC Video playlist

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires it for the VLC Video source type to appear.
  2. Add a VLC Video source and build its playlist from the local promo files.
  3. Choose the sequence deliberately: use the desired order when campaign timing matters, or shuffle only when any order is acceptable. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the playlist after it reaches the end.
  4. Check scene visibility and playback behavior. OBS’s documented VLC-source behavior makes visibility relevant, so verify the source does not pause or stop unexpectedly when hidden.

The documented setup loops the selected file or playlist; it does not choose a holiday, summer or other playlist based on the calendar. For a season change, update the file or playlist in OBS yourself, then verify the new selection in preview.

Connect OBS and check stream settings

  1. In OBS, open the streaming settings and enter the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private and confirm you have connected OBS to the intended event.
  2. Choose resolution, frame rate, encoder and bitrate to suit both your video and your available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s current encoder guidance provides codec-specific bitrate ranges; consult its live encoder settings rather than relying on a generic bitrate figure that may not match your codec or resolution.
  3. Prefer RTMPS where available, as YouTube recommends it. Leave enough upload capacity for the full stream bitrate; YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% spare capacity above the total streaming bitrate.
  4. Use YouTube’s recommended lead time: set up the encoder stream at least two hours ahead, and start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. This gives you time to catch playback, connection or audio problems.

Rehearse, start and monitor the event

  1. Start streaming from OBS early enough to send a feed to Live Control Room. Check the YouTube preview before the event begins. YouTube’s instruction is: “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.”
  2. Confirm the preview shows the correct seasonal promo, the video is moving, and audio is intentional and at a sensible level. A still frame, black output or unwanted silence is easier to fix before viewers arrive.
  3. When the scheduled time arrives and the preview is correct, start the event in YouTube Live Control Room if required for the selected stream setup. Keep monitoring audio and video quality while the broadcast is live.
  4. At the end, stop the event on YouTube deliberately, then stop the OBS encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS does not show VLC Video as a source VLC is not installed or OBS cannot find it. Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list again.
The promo plays once and stops Loop is off for a Media Source, or Loop Playlist is off for VLC Video. Enable the matching loop control for the source you chose and test through the end of the clip or playlist.
The wrong seasonal spot appears The Media Source points to a different file, or the VLC playlist contains old or incorrectly ordered items. Re-select the intended file or edit the playlist; verify the result in the OBS and YouTube previews.
Playlist playback pauses or stops when changing scenes The VLC source’s behavior may be affected by whether its scene or source is visible. Keep the source visible as needed and test scene changes before the scheduled broadcast.
YouTube preview is missing or the event does not receive OBS The stream URL or key may be wrong, or the encoder has not connected. Compare OBS’s streaming settings with the URL and key in the intended Live Control Room event. If needed, copy the current values again and reconnect.
Video or audio quality degrades, or the stream disconnects The selected total bitrate may exceed available upload bandwidth, or the connection may fluctuate. Check YouTube’s encoder settings for the chosen codec and format, lower the stream bitrate or resolution if needed, and preserve the recommended 20% upload headroom.

Copyright and seasonal content checks

Use footage, music, images and voice recordings that your store owns or is authorized to broadcast on YouTube. A video that is permitted for an in-store display or social post is not automatically cleared for a public live stream. Review licenses for every item in the playlist, including music that plays repeatedly, and replace material if the rights do not cover this use. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and channel eligibility guidance are available in its live streaming help.

A loop is a playback method, not a guarantee that the content complies with YouTube’s rules or will be suitable for viewers. Make sure the broadcast has a clear purpose and that repeated promos remain accurate for the full scheduled period; remove expired offers before reusing a playlist.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a store computer and home connection to keep the broadcast running, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service that plays uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running with your computer off; uploaded quality is preserved up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plan details. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
