There is no single confirmed fix for an OBS VLC source that fails after several hours: OBS may exit, the source may freeze while OBS stays open, or playback may simply stop. Those are different symptoms. Start by identifying which one you have, then test the source and media in a controlled copy of your scene.
First, distinguish a crash from a freeze or stopped playback
“Crashing” can describe three different outcomes, and the distinction guides the next test:

- OBS exits: The application closes unexpectedly. Keep the OBS log from a reproduction and any crash report your system produces.
- The VLC source freezes: OBS remains open, but the source stops updating or playing. Note whether other sources and the rest of OBS continue to work.
- Playback stops: The source may have reached the end, failed to advance a playlist item, or otherwise stopped without OBS itself exiting. Record what the source showed and whether it was set to loop or change tracks.
Before changing anything, write down your operating system, OBS Studio and VLC versions, source type, media formats, whether the playlist uses local files or a network stream, and whether the source loops or changes tracks. Reproduce the problem if possible and save the OBS log; if OBS exits, retain the crash report too. A delayed failure by itself does not identify its cause.

For local-file playback, isolate the file from the rest of the setup before changing codecs, settings, or software versions.

- Duplicate the affected scene so you can test without disrupting your original setup.
- In the duplicate, reduce the VLC Video Source to one local file. Remove network streams and other playlist entries for this test.
- Let the file play under the same loop or playback conditions that normally precede the failure. Record whether OBS exits, the source freezes, or playback stops, and note the elapsed time.
- Make a second test with that same file in OBS Media Source. Compare whether the file plays, how long it runs, OBS memory use, and any changes in the log or crash report.
OBS Media Source is a diagnostic alternative for a local file, not a universal replacement for VLC playlists or network streams. One macOS user reported that it appeared promising for their video, but that is an anecdotal result rather than proof it will fix other setups. Check whether a particular media file is implicated
Confirm the file is valid
If adding one file triggers an immediate crash, test whether that file opens and plays independently in a media player. A historical issue report described a crash on macOS 13 with OBS 29.1.3 after an invalid file was added to VLC Video Source and its properties were closed. That immediate-crash reproduction differs from a failure after hours, but it makes file validity worth checking. The report is a case, not evidence that invalid media is the cause of every delayed failure. See OBS Studio issue #9321.

Compare the original with a re-encoded copy
If one looping file seems associated with the failure, create a separate re-encoded copy and repeat the same test with the same scene and playback settings. Change only the file, then compare the result and OBS memory observations. A user reported that re-encoding appeared to resolve one looping-file crash; this limited anecdote does not guarantee a fix. Another historical report described substantial memory growth during FLV playback on macOS 10.15.4 with OBS 25.0.8. That does not establish that FLV universally causes crashes or that your case is a memory leak. See the OBS forum re-encoding report and OBS Studio issue #2919.
If your source is a network playlist
Do not treat a network playlist failure as equivalent to a local-file problem. One historical report described a YouTube playlist ingested as a VLC network stream freezing after about an hour; the user needed to replace the source. That case does not establish a fix for local files or for every network protocol. See the OBS forum report about VLC source freezing.

- Record the exact network source and whether OBS stays open when playback stalls.
- Where practical, compare its behavior with a local-file control in the duplicate scene. Keep the test conditions and observation period similar.
- Save the log and note whether replacing or restarting the source restores playback, without treating that recovery as a lasting fix.
How to interpret the results
- If the same local file fails in VLC Video Source but appears to run in Media Source during a comparable test, that is a useful clue about this setup—not proof that Media Source is categorically more stable.
- If an original file fails but a re-encoded copy does not under the same conditions, the media file or its handling may be involved. Repeat the comparison before drawing a conclusion.
- If only the network playlist freezes while OBS remains open, keep investigating it as a network-source symptom rather than an OBS process crash.
- If neither test reproduces the failure, keep the original log, versions, and source details. An intermittent problem may require a longer or more representative reproduction.
The reports behind these examples date from 2019 to 2023 and describe specific user setups, including OBS 25.0.8/macOS 10.15.4 and OBS 29.1.3/macOS 13. They are historical case reports, not proof of a defect in a current OBS release. They do not establish a universal upgrade, downgrade, driver change, or hardware purchase as the answer.
