Choose how the stream will run
YouTube Live receives an encoded live feed. The encoder can be software on a computer, a hosted cloud service, or a dedicated hardware appliance. The right choice depends on whether you can leave equipment and internet running, how you will recover from interruptions, and whether your caption method is supported.

Burn subtitles into the video
Burned-in, or open, subtitles are composited into the picture before the video enters the playlist. They are the straightforward option if every viewer should see the same text without extra live-caption setup. Viewers cannot switch them off or choose another language, and the subtitle timing and appearance depend on how the source video was prepared.

Send captions separately
Selectable live captions are separate from the video image and require a compatible caption workflow. YouTube documents embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions: enable embedded captions in the stream settings and configure the encoder to send the appropriate format. YouTube currently documents one caption track for this workflow.
YouTube also describes supported software workflows that send a caption feed to a signed ingestion URL, and lists products such as CaptionMaker and StreamText.Net. Check the current YouTube instructions and vendor documentation for compatibility. A timed subtitle file uploaded for an ordinary YouTube video is a separate workflow; uploading an .srt file to a normal video does not itself provide captions to a live stream.

Automatic live captions have limits
YouTube’s help information describes automatic live captions as English-only and subject to rollout, eligibility, latency, and professional-caption conditions. It also says these live captions do not remain on the stream archive. Check availability in YouTube Studio before relying on them.
Prepare videos and the playlist
- Choose your subtitle approach. For burned-in subtitles, render the text into every source video before uploading or adding it to a playlist. For selectable captions, confirm that your encoder and caption-delivery method support YouTube’s current live workflow, then prepare the caption feed accordingly.
- Check the whole source, not just a sample frame. Review the beginning, middle, and end of each video for subtitle timing, legibility, and safe placement. Check that the audio is present and that transitions between playlist items do not introduce an unintended blank or silent interval.
- Assemble the loop. Add the prepared videos in the order you want them to play and confirm how your chosen encoder or service handles the end of the list and restart. If the playlist is intended to run continuously, test at least one transition and loop boundary before launch.
Enable YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Enable live streaming in advance. Verify that the channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until just before the planned start.
- Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Configure captions if they are separate. For embedded 608/708 captions, enable the option in the YouTube stream settings and configure the encoder to send the matching caption data. For a separate caption feed, follow the current signed-ingestion workflow and the caption software’s instructions.
- Start the encoder and verify the live player. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the correct video, audio, and caption behavior appears to a viewer. For selectable captions, check from a separate viewer device that the captions can be enabled in the player.
Set output quality for a stable connection
Use the bitrate and resolution your sustained upload connection can support, rather than choosing settings based only on the source file’s maximum quality. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and documents H.264 video, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds for the keyframe interval. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the applicable resolution and frame-rate bitrate guidance, then test with representative motion and audio before leaving the stream unattended.

YouTube transcodes a live feed for different viewer formats, but that does not remove the need for a reliable encoder-to-YouTube connection. During the test, watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and review any warnings or messages. If health is poor, reduce output demands or improve the upload connection before the continuous run.

Decide how to preserve recordings
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If you need a reliable recording, plan archive segments and keep a local recording as a backup; YouTube specifically recommends recording a local archive. A continuous 24/7 schedule should not depend on one uninterrupted YouTube archive.

Expect to handle dropped connections
Decide before launch what should happen if YouTube or the encoder connection drops: whether the encoder can reconnect, who will monitor alerts, and how the next live session or archive segment will be started. Test recovery rather than assuming a playlist will resume exactly where it stopped. Platform and encoder behavior can change, so verify the current settings in YouTube Studio and your encoder.

Confirm rights for every video and audio element, including background music, for the intended live use. YouTube scans live streams and may replace the live image, interrupt the feed, or terminate the stream when it detects matching copyrighted content. A license does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery: a stream can still be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel. Content must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
Troubleshoot common problems
