If Windows Update appears stuck at 0% or 100%, stops between 51% and 99%, reports “There were problems installing some updates, but we’ll try again later,” or rolls back an installation, start with the troubleshooter for your Windows version. Then restart, check the connection and available space, and use any displayed error code to choose the next repair. A percentage by itself does not tell you how long an update should take.
First, identify what is stuck
Note whether Windows is checking for updates, downloading, installing, or restarting. Write down the exact error message and any code shown in Windows Update. A code can narrow the possible causes, but it is not a guaranteed diagnosis; use Microsoft’s instructions for the specific code rather than relying on a short list of examples.

Update time varies with connection speed, network settings, and update size. Microsoft does not specify a universal number of minutes after which an update is officially stuck. If progress has not changed, check Windows Update again or run the troubleshooter before concluding that the installation has frozen.
Run the troubleshooter for your Windows version
Windows 11
- Open the Get Help app and start the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Follow its prompts to complete troubleshooting, then restart the PC.
- Check Windows Update again.
If using the Settings-based route, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.

Windows 10

- Follow the prompts, restart the PC, and check Windows Update again.
Settings labels can vary by build. Follow the labels shown on your device if they differ. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date.
Check the connection and available space
- Connection: Confirm the PC is connected to the internet. Network conditions can affect both download time and installation.
- Space: Open File Explorer > This PC and check the available space on the Windows drive. If it is low, use Windows’ storage cleanup options and check whether the specific update or upgrade has a space requirement.
- Restart: If Windows is responsive, restart before trying Windows Update again.
Microsoft’s stated free-space thresholds of 16 GB for upgrading a 32-bit operating system and 20 GB for upgrading a 64-bit operating system apply to OS upgrades, not to every routine cumulative update. A device with a small hard drive may need a USB drive for an update, but check the actual update requirements and available space before deciding that external storage is necessary.

Use the error code to choose the next step
These examples describe possible causes Microsoft associates with codes; they do not establish the cause on any particular PC. Match the full code to Microsoft’s dedicated guidance before attempting a targeted fix.
| Error code | Possible cause indicated by Microsoft |
|---|---|
| 0x8007000d | Corrupted update files or cache |
| 0x800705b4 | An update took too long or was interrupted |
| 0x80240034 | An incomplete update or connection issue |
| 0x800f0922 | Insufficient space or component issues |
| 0xC1900101 | An incompatible driver |
| 0x80248014 | An update database or service issue |
| 0x80070005 | An access or permissions issue |
Repair system files when corruption is indicated
If the code or Microsoft’s instructions point to corrupted system files, Microsoft’s built-in repair sequence is DISM first, then System File Checker (SFC). These commands require administrator permission.

- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to complete. - Run
sfc /scannow. Keep the Command Prompt window open until verification reaches 100%. - Restart Windows and try Windows Update again.
DISM runs first because it provides files needed for repair. Do not treat these commands as a universal fix for every update error; use them when the relevant guidance points to system-file corruption.

Back up personal files before broader troubleshooting. If the problem started after a recent update, uninstalling that update might help; the option is available through the Windows Recovery Environment. Resetting or reinstalling Windows are more consequential recovery choices, so review Microsoft’s recovery instructions and understand the effects before proceeding.
