How to Track Endangered Species When Smoke Disrupts Fieldwork

Smoke can make field visits impractical, but monitoring may continue with methods matched to the species and research question. Learn what cameras, acoustic recorders, eDNA, telemetry and remote sensing can—and cannot—show.

When smoke makes field visits unsafe or impractical, keep the monitoring question going with a method suited to the species and the evidence you need. Remote cameras, autonomous acoustic recorders, existing GPS or radio telemetry, remote sensing and environmental DNA (eDNA) can each contribute—but they measure different things and are not interchangeable. Before changing a protocol, check permit terms and coordinate with the relevant land manager or agency.

Start with the question, not the available sensor

Decide what you need to learn before choosing a substitute for an in-person visit. A record of presence does not by itself establish abundance, movement, reproduction or habitat condition. For example, a camera image may document an animal passing a location; a habitat image may show landscape change without proving that a particular species is present.

Compare candidate methods against the target species’ detectability, the outcome being measured, spatial and temporal coverage, smoke and access conditions, permissions, equipment and analysis needs, data quality, and the security of sensitive location records. USGS describes camera networks as useful for biodiversity monitoring and estimating distribution or abundance, while the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) lists multiple remote-sensing tools for different wildlife and habitat applications.

Choose a method that fits the species and inference

Method Useful for Key limits
Remote camera trap Visual records and terrestrial biodiversity occurrence monitoring over time. The target must pass within the camera’s view. Deployment, image review and processing still take effort.
Autonomous acoustic recorder Monitoring vocal birds and bats; recordings can be processed for calls, including with automated classifiers. Useful only when the target makes detectable sounds. Placement, sound conditions and identification processing need validation and appropriate review.
Environmental DNA (eDNA) Detecting trace genetic material left by organisms in an environment; USGS documents use for native and rare species. The sample medium, target and assay must fit the question. The cited sources do not establish a universal protocol for smoke-disrupted fieldwork.
GPS or radio telemetry Location and movement information from animals carrying tracking devices. Requires existing tagged animals or authorized capture and tagging, plus suitable receiver coverage.
Remote sensing Habitat mapping, inventories and some movement- or species-monitoring applications using optical, thermal, radar, sonar or lidar imagery. Sensors differ in target, scale and resolution. An image does not automatically establish that a species is present.
Uncrewed aircraft Some authorized research, wildlife inventory and wildfire-assessment missions. Flight near active wildfires may be restricted and can interfere with firefighting. Smoke alone does not show that airspace is safe or open.

Remote cameras for animals that can be seen

USGS describes remote cameras as a growing sensor-network approach for terrestrial biodiversity. They can gather occurrence data over extended periods without repeated visits to each camera. A wildlife camera trap can therefore help maintain a visual monitoring record when travel to a site is temporarily unsuitable.

Camera detections are constrained by where and when animals pass the field of view. Standardize deployment and record effort and conditions so that detections can be interpreted. USGS also emphasizes protocols, shared metadata and collaboration for camera networks. Protect records that could reveal sensitive species locations.

Autonomous audio for vocal or echolocating species

Autonomous recorders can capture bird and bat sounds for later analysis. USGS reports the use of audio devices and machine learning to process recordings, including an automated bat-call classifier. An ultrasonic bat detector is relevant only when the target’s calls are detectable with the equipment and method being used.

eDNA when a suitable sample and assay are available

Environmental DNA is genetic material organisms leave in environments as they move through them. USGS describes eDNA as a route for detecting species, including native and rare species. Whether it can answer a particular monitoring question depends on the sample medium, the target and assay validation.

Do not treat eDNA as a universal replacement for observing animals in person. The sources describe its use for detection, but do not establish a standard smoke-event sampling protocol or show that every eDNA result supports estimates of abundance, movement or reproduction.

Telemetry and remote sensing for spatial information

Existing GPS or radio telemetry can preserve location and movement information when field access is disrupted, provided animals already carry devices and the tracking system has suitable coverage. Capturing or tagging animals to start a new telemetry effort is a separate activity that requires applicable authorization.

USFWS describes using acoustic GPS and radio telemetry alongside optical, thermal, radar, sonar and lidar imagery for habitat mapping, movement tracking, inventories and monitoring trust species. These tools cover different scales and targets; select one based on the inference needed, not simply because imagery or a tracking signal is available.

Keep fieldwork and airspace decisions safe

Do not enter smoke-affected areas if conditions make access unsafe, and follow incident, land-manager and agency directions. A smoke event does not establish that a route, site or airspace is safe. In particular, do not fly a drone near an active wildfire without explicit authorization and coordination.

The U.S. Department of the Interior reported in its May 29, 2026 notice that there were 53 unauthorized drone incursions during wildfires in 2025; 44 of those incidents directly interfered with or threatened aerial firefighting operations. The notice explains that a drone sighting can force fire managers to suspend aerial firefighting until the aircraft is confirmed clear. These figures concern wildfire incidents, not wildlife-monitoring performance.

Change a protocol without losing the meaning of the record

  1. Define the immediate inference. State whether the project needs evidence of presence, abundance, movement, reproduction or habitat condition.
  2. Check the species and method fit. Confirm that the animal is visually detectable, vocal or echolocating, already tracked, or detectable through a validated eDNA assay, as applicable.
  3. Review authorization and access. Check permit conditions, the recovery plan, land access rules and guidance from the responsible land manager or agency before changing methods or resuming visits.
  4. Document the substitute method. Record method, effort, placement or coverage, environmental conditions, processing choices and known limitations so later users can distinguish new observations from the original protocol.
  5. Secure sensitive records. Limit access to precise locations where disclosure could harm an endangered species, consistent with project and agency requirements.

USFWS says endangered-species work includes monitoring and evaluating status and implementing recovery plans. Administration of the Endangered Species Act is shared with NOAA; specific survey conditions, permits, handling rules and land access depend on the species, place and project. The statute’s stated purpose is “to protect and recover imperiled species and the ecosystems upon which they depend.”

What smoke does—and does not—tell you about monitoring

The federal sources cited here describe monitoring methods and wildfire drone safety, but do not provide comparative measurements of how smoke affects detection rates across cameras, recorders, eDNA, telemetry or remote-sensing systems. Treat a method change as a change in evidence, not proof that the new approach matches the old one. State what the method detected, the conditions and effort under which it operated, and what the result cannot establish.
