An intent-based cross-chain swap changes how a transfer is requested and fulfilled; it does not automatically make the route safer or eliminate bridges. A bridge relies on a mechanism to verify events between chains, while an intent lets solvers arrange the steps and often front the destination asset before settlement. To judge security, examine the specific route’s verification model, asset, contracts, controls, solver liquidity and failure handling—not just whether it is called a bridge or an intent.
What is the difference between a bridge and an intent-based swap?
Blockchains have separate consensus and execution systems, so moving value between them requires a way to verify what happened on one chain and act on it on another. A bridge is infrastructure for doing that. An intent-based swap is an execution and market design: the user states the desired outcome, and solvers compete to deliver it.

How a bridge transfer works
Common bridge patterns lock an asset on one chain and mint a representation on another; burn an asset on one side and release it on the other; or lock and later unlock assets after verification. Verification may use validator signatures, light-client proofs or threshold attestations. The bridge’s security therefore depends on the verification mechanism, its implementation and the people or keys with authority over it.

The user specifies the result they want rather than a full sequence of transactions. Off-chain solvers can compete to fill that request, often by delivering the destination asset from their own liquidity. A later settlement process checks that the fill satisfies the intent and allows the solver to be repaid. That creates two different timings: when the user receives the requested asset and when the solver’s advance is settled.

Intent-based does not mean bridge-free, trustless or risk-free. An implementation may still depend on bridges or messaging systems, contracts, relayers, validators or oracles. For example, the February 19, 2026 preprint by André Augusto, Christof Ferreira Torres, André Vasconcelos and Miguel Correia describes Mayan Swift as using a Wormhole-based bridge. The particular route’s dependencies determine its guarantees.
Which risks change—and which remain?
| Question | Conventional bridge | Intent-based swap |
|---|---|---|
| Who arranges the transfer? | The bridge’s contracts and verification mechanism coordinate locking, minting, burning or release. | Solvers arrange the steps needed to deliver the requested outcome; settlement subsequently checks the fill. |
| What might the user receive? | A wrapped or otherwise bridged representation may depend on the source asset’s backing and on mint or release controls. | The destination asset may come from solver liquidity. Whether that is native or bridged depends on the specific route. |
| Where is an important dependency? | In the bridge’s verification, contracts, operators or keys, and asset model. | In those route dependencies plus solver participation, available liquidity and later settlement. |
| What timing should be checked? | When the destination transaction completes and what chain or verification events can delay it. | Both user-visible fulfillment and the later settlement and reimbursement process. |
| What can fail at the service level? | Verification, a trusted operator, contracts or chain conditions can interrupt or compromise transfers. | A solver may be unavailable or short of liquidity; settlement or underlying route components can also fail or be delayed. |
The difference is a shift in how execution and liquidity are organized, not a clean separation between “bridge risk” and “no bridge risk.” Ethereum.org’s bridge documentation, last updated April 3, 2026, cautions that aggregators inherit smart-contract and technology risks from their integrations. An intent interface likewise should not be treated as evidence that its underlying route has no bridge or messaging dependencies.
Risks to examine in a conventional bridge
Verification, operators and privileged control
Ask who or what verifies source-chain events and what proof, signatures or threshold are required. A trusted design can introduce counterparty, censorship or custody assumptions; a validator-based or threshold design still depends on its stated collusion and key-control assumptions. Also check who can upgrade contracts, pause the system or otherwise intervene, and what happens if the verification mechanism or a chain fails.

Ethereum.org groups bridge concerns under smart-contract risk, systemic financial risk from wrapped assets, counterparty risk in trusted designs, and unresolved behavior during congestion, network attacks or state rollbacks. The label “decentralized” does not answer who can control an upgrade, compromise a key or prevent a transfer.
Wrapped assets and backing
A destination-chain representation is not automatically equivalent to holding the source-chain asset directly. Check what backs it, how that backing is verified, and what the bridge can mint or release. If backing, verification or mint controls fail, the representation may no longer have the expected support.
Contracts, upgrades and operational conditions
Review the contracts involved, their administrative controls and the scope and date of any security assessment. An assessment is evidence about a defined system at a particular time, not a guarantee of present safety. Congestion, attacks or state rollbacks can also affect outcomes, so look for documented pause, recovery and failure behavior rather than assuming every transfer completes normally.

Risks that are especially important for intent-based swaps
Solver liquidity and availability
Solvers may have to advance capital before asynchronous settlement repays them. Their funds can remain tied up during that interval; a solver that lacks liquidity may be unable to fill more orders. If activity is concentrated among a small number of solvers, one participant’s withdrawal or failure can affect service availability. Faster delivery to a user does not mean the solver has already been reimbursed or that settlement is final.

In its sample of Ethereum fulfills during that period, the top solver accounted for 24% of Mayan Swift fulfills, 19% of Across fulfills and 94% of deBridge fulfills. These are observations from that historical sample, not guarantees about current solver participation or a present-day safety ranking.
Settlement delay and route dependencies
Because fulfillment and reimbursement occur at different stages, ask how failed, delayed or disputed fills are handled and what conditions trigger settlement. The route may also inherit bridge, oracle, contract or chain-specific risks. A solver’s promise to deliver an asset does not, by itself, establish how the underlying cross-chain event is verified.

What the liquidity-exhaustion study establishes
The same preprint proposes and simulates liquidity-exhaustion attacks against three protocols. Its results vary by protocol and by modeled assumptions; they are a warning that solver liquidity and system availability deserve scrutiny, not evidence that every intent system is vulnerable in the same way or that a named protocol is categorically safe. The simulations should not be described as confirmed attacks on users’ funds.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare a specific route
Use the exact source chain, destination chain, token pair and protocol you intend to use. Check the route’s documentation immediately before transacting: support, controls, liquidity and assessments can change.
- Identify the verification path. Find out how source-chain events are verified, which validators, proof systems or signers are involved, what threshold applies and what key-control or collusion assumptions remain.
- Identify the asset you will receive. Determine whether it is a wrapped or bridged representation, a native asset, or an asset delivered from solver liquidity. For a representation, check what backs it and how minting or release is controlled.
- Inspect contracts and administration. Look for contracts, privileged keys, upgrade powers and pause controls. Read an assessment’s scope and date rather than treating an audit or review as a blanket guarantee.
- For an intent route, inspect solver structure. Ask how many solvers are active, whether fulfillment is concentrated, how deep liquidity is and how the system handles a solver that cannot fill or settle.
- Separate delivery from final settlement. Check when the destination asset is expected to arrive, what later settlement or reimbursement requires, and which chain or protocol events can delay finality.
- Check the practical route details. Confirm the exact chains and tokens are supported. Compare costs, required user actions, congestion behavior and any documented fallback path.
- Consider safety and liveness separately. Safety asks whether the system preserves the intended asset or message outcome; liveness asks whether it can continue operating or recover under faults. A design can address one without fully resolving the other.
These questions reflect the use-case-specific framework of the Uniswap Governance and Uniswap Foundation Bridge Assessment Committee. Its June 15, 2023 results describe assessments as dated snapshots, not permanent certifications. The same date limitation applies to any assessment: confirm that it covers the route and system version you are evaluating.

How to interpret bridge-security figures
Historical counts and case assessments help explain why no architecture label is a sufficient security verdict, but they should not be generalized into a rating for all bridges. The 2024 study SoK: Cross-Chain Bridging Architectural Design Flaws and Mitigations analyzed 60 bridges and 34 exploits from 2021–2023. The 2023 study SoK: Security of Cross-chain Bridges: Attack Surfaces, Defenses, and Open Problems identified 12 potential attack vectors. These are historical analyses, not live status reports on a particular route.
Similarly, Parity Security Hub’s June 2023 assessment of the Polkadot–Kusama bridge considered 52 potential risk scenarios, identified six key categories and assigned a maximum risk level of High. That finding applies to that system-specific assessment; it is not a rating for bridges generally.
Ethereum.org puts the broader point plainly: “With bridges, there are no perfect solutions. Rather, there are only trade-offs made to fulfill a purpose.” The useful question is not whether bridges or intents are safest in the abstract, but whether a specific route’s assumptions and failure behavior fit the assets and risks you are willing to accept.
