How to Trim Your Minecraft World with the WorldBorder Plugin

Set a border, back up your world, and use WorldBorder's trim command carefully. This guide explains freq, pad, confirmation behavior, performance trade-offs, troubleshooting, and post-trim checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To trim a Minecraft world safely, define the border first, make a complete backup, and then run the WorldBorder trim operation for that world. Trimming removes generated chunks outside the selected border, so the deleted terrain cannot be recovered from the live world without restoring a backup.

The practical command is /wb [worldname] trim [freq] [pad]. Choose a conservative check rate if players are online, keep an intentional buffer beyond the border, and verify whether your installed release asks for a separate confirmation before it begins.

What WorldBorder trimming actually does

Minecraft stores generated terrain as chunks. Exploring creates more chunks, and those files remain even after players stop visiting the area. A WorldBorder trim removes generated chunks beyond the border you specify. It does not merely hide them from players or prevent future exploration; it deletes the extra chunk data from the world folder.

After trimming, a player who travels outside the retained area may cause new chunks to generate unless the border and its buffer are configured to stop that. Newly generated terrain is different from the deleted terrain, so trimming is best treated as a one-way storage cleanup, not as a reversible optimization.

What trimming can and cannot accomplish

  • It can reduce the amount of generated terrain stored outside your intended play area.
  • It can make a deliberately bounded world easier to back up and move.
  • It does not shrink the world to a perfect circle or square by rewriting every file; the result follows the plugin’s border and chunk logic.
  • It does not preserve deleted chunks. Restoration requires replacing the world with a backup made before trimming.
  • It does not replace the normal Minecraft world border. The plugin’s border, its trim operation, and your server’s player-access rules should be planned together.

Read the trim command correctly

WorldBorder documents the syntax as:

/wb [worldname] trim [freq] [pad]

worldname identifies the world to process. If you omit it, the plugin uses the current world context, which is convenient in-game but less explicit for console work. On a server with multiple worlds, naming the world avoids trimming the wrong dimension or a similarly named copy.

freq controls how many chunks per second the plugin checks while looking for chunks outside the border. A higher value can finish sooner but creates more disk and CPU activity at once. A lower value is gentler to a live server and normally takes longer.

pad is the extra distance retained beyond the visible border. The buffer reduces the chance that players can immediately generate replacement chunks alongside the edge after trimming. The official documentation lists 208 as its default. Treat that as a plugin default, not as a universal value for every release or server design.

The disputed frequency default

Published guidance is inconsistent about the default frequency. The official documentation gives 5,000 checks per second, while other guides list 20. Because those figures differ by two orders of magnitude, do not assume either value is active on your installation. Check the command help or configuration supplied with your current WorldBorder release before relying on a default.

Setting Meaning Documented value or guidance Operational effect
freq Chunk checks per second Official documentation: 5,000 default; other guides: 20 Higher is faster and more disruptive; lower is slower and usually kinder to players
pad Chunks or distance retained beyond the border Official documentation: 208 default Larger buffers consume more storage but reduce edge regeneration risk

Prepare the server before trimming

Confirm the target world

List the worlds you operate and identify the exact folder or world name used by the server. Pay particular attention to Nether and End worlds, which are separate world contexts. A border set in one world does not automatically define the same retained area in another.

Check that WorldBorder is loaded

Use the plugin’s in-game help or console help command to confirm that the installed build recognizes the trim subcommand and its arguments. This is important because the available syntax and confirmation behavior can vary between releases. The documentation commonly cited for this feature is old, and no single frequency default can be assumed for a 2026 server without checking the build you installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Schedule enough maintenance time

Trimming walks through chunk data and performs file operations. The duration depends on how many chunks exist, the storage device, the server’s workload, and the selected frequency. The command’s parameters do not provide a reliable finish-time estimate, so schedule it during a quiet period and monitor the console rather than promising players a fixed completion time.

Make a restorable backup

Stop player activity before taking the final backup, then copy the complete world data and record where the backup is stored. A backup is useful only if you can identify it and restore it. Keep the pre-trim copy separate from automated backups that might overwrite it with the already-trimmed world.

Do not treat a region-file copy made while the world is actively writing as a guaranteed recovery point. Use your server’s normal stop-and-back-up procedure, or otherwise ensure world saves are complete before copying the files.

Step-by-step: set the border and trim the world

  1. Set the border for the intended world. From the console, a documented example is wb world set 5000 0 0. In this example, world is the target world name and the remaining values define the border size and center used by the plugin. Replace the example world and coordinates with the values appropriate to your map. Confirm the border visually or with the plugin’s status/help commands before deleting anything.
  2. Finish and verify the backup. Make the backup after the border is decided but before any trim command is started. Check that the archive or copy contains the target world’s files and that your restore process is known.
  3. Select a frequency. For a live server, begin conservatively. Guidance aimed at performance recommends 20 or lower, while the official documentation advises keeping its default or going lower when players are online. Because the documented default conflicts with other guides, specify a value explicitly instead of relying on an implicit one.
  4. Select the buffer. Use a pad that leaves sufficient generated terrain outside the playable edge. The official documentation’s example default is 208. A smaller pad saves more space but gives players less protection against immediate regeneration near the border.
  5. Run the trim command. Supply the world name, chosen frequency, and pad in the syntax shown earlier. A documented example is /wb world trim 20 208; it targets world, checks at 20 chunks per second, and keeps a 208-unit buffer. Use your own world and settings rather than copying those numbers blindly.
  6. Answer a confirmation prompt if your build shows one. One current guide describes /wb trim confirm as a required second step. That requirement is not confirmed by the official documentation cited for the command, so do not issue it automatically on every server. If the plugin reports that confirmation is required, enter the exact command it displays; if it starts immediately, let the operation proceed without adding an unrecognized command.
  7. Watch the console and server health. Look for progress, errors, repeated I/O warnings, or a rising tick-time or latency problem. If players experience severe lag, pause or stop the operation using the control exposed by your installed build, then resume only after checking its help and the backup.
  8. Complete post-trim map maintenance. If DynMap is installed, restart the server after trimming and run a full render. Its cached map can otherwise continue showing terrain that no longer exists in the world files.

Choosing a frequency for an online server

Frequency is a trade-off between completion time and the load placed on the server while chunks are examined. There is no single best number because the workload changes with the size of the world, the storage subsystem, concurrent players, and other plugins.

Situation Practical choice Reasoning
Maintenance window with no players A higher explicitly chosen value, after testing With player activity removed, the server has more headroom to process checks and disk work.
Players online and performance is important 20 or lower is the conservative guidance cited by third-party documentation The lower rate reduces the amount of work introduced each second, at the cost of a longer run.
Unsure which default your release uses Specify freq explicitly The official 5,000 default conflicts with guides that list 20, so an implicit setting is ambiguous.

How to adjust during a run

Do not change parameters by guessing at undocumented commands. If the server becomes unstable, use the stop, pause, or cancellation action shown by your version’s WorldBorder help, and preserve the pre-trim backup. After the server is stable, restart the operation with a lower explicit frequency if the plugin supports resuming or restarting safely.

Choosing the pad around the border

The pad is a defensive margin, not extra playable area. It keeps a buffer of generated terrain outside the border so that ordinary movement cannot immediately reach the edge of the retained data and trigger replacement generation. The official documentation’s default is 208, but the right value depends on how strictly you enforce the border and how much storage you are willing to retain.

Use a larger pad when

  • Players can move quickly with vehicles, flight, portals, or other travel mechanics.
  • The border is enforced visually but edge access is not otherwise restricted.
  • You want more tolerance for small changes to the border after the trim.

Use a smaller pad when

  • Storage reduction is the main goal and the border is enforced reliably.
  • The map is temporary or disposable, so preserving a large margin has little value.
  • You have tested movement and teleportation rules around the edge.

A pad does not prevent every form of new generation. Teleports, commands, portal mechanics, or a later border change can still expose areas that were not retained. Treat it as a buffer that lowers risk, not as a replacement for access controls.

What happens to players, structures, and map data

Any generated terrain outside the retained area is eligible for deletion, including naturally generated terrain and structures located in those chunks. Player builds, chests, farms, roads, redstone machines, and other block data are not exempt merely because they are valuable. Move anything important inside the retained area before the trim.

Entities and plugin data associated with deleted chunks should not be considered recoverable. If another plugin maintains indexes, maps, claims, or region caches, its data may need a rebuild after the world files change. DynMap specifically requires a restart followed by a full render according to the documented workflow.

Troubleshooting common failures

The command is rejected as unknown

Check that WorldBorder is enabled, that you are using the command prefix supported by your build, and that you entered the world name exactly. Open the plugin’s help output and compare the displayed trim syntax with the command you typed. Do not assume a command from an older guide is valid for a newer release.

The wrong world is being processed

Stop before confirming or continuing. Recheck the world name shown in the command, the server console context, and the plugin’s current border status. For multiworld servers, always provide the explicit world name rather than relying on the current-world shortcut.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trim is too slow

A lower frequency intentionally takes longer. If no players are online and the server has spare capacity, you can choose a higher explicit value on a later attempt. Do not raise it blindly while players are active; disk contention can produce more disruption than the time saved.

Players report lag during trimming

Reduce the workload by stopping player activity, lowering the frequency, or scheduling the operation for maintenance. Monitor server tick performance and storage errors. If the server becomes unstable, stop according to the controls exposed by your installed release and fall back to the backup if world integrity is in doubt.

Old terrain still appears on the web map

Restart the server and run DynMap’s full-render operation after trimming. A stale cache can display removed chunks even when the world files have been changed.

The border edge generates new terrain

Check the pad value, confirm that the border is set in the same world that was trimmed, and test travel methods that can bypass ordinary movement. A pad that is too small, a border changed after trimming, or a teleport/portal path can expose untrimmed coordinates.

Compatibility and version cautions

The most frequently cited WorldBorder documentation for trimming is several years old, so exact behavior should be checked against the release installed on your server. In particular, verify the accepted argument order, the active frequency default, whether a confirmation command is required, and whether your server platform is supported.

Some third-party material claims compatibility limited to Paper-based servers, but that claim is not independently established here. Consult the current plugin release notes and your platform’s loading log before planning a production trim. A command that works on one fork or plugin build may be rejected on another.

After the trim: verify before deleting the backup

  1. Start the server normally and confirm that the target world loads without region or chunk errors.
  2. Test the border from inside the retained area and verify that normal travel stops where intended.
  3. Check a few edge locations for expected terrain and confirm that important builds remain.
  4. Review the console for file or database errors from WorldBorder and other world-aware plugins.
  5. Rebuild external maps or caches, including the DynMap restart and full render when applicable.
  6. Keep the pre-trim backup until players have tested the world and you are satisfied that all required data survived.

Only after these checks should you rotate the backup according to your normal retention policy. If a build, region, or plugin index is missing, restore the pre-trim copy rather than attempting to recreate deleted chunks through exploration.

A safe operating checklist

  • Identify the exact world to trim.
  • Confirm that the installed WorldBorder build exposes the trim command.
  • Set and verify the border before deleting data.
  • Move valuable builds and infrastructure inside the retained area.
  • Stop or limit player activity.
  • Create and verify a complete, restorable backup.
  • Choose explicit freq and pad values.
  • Run the trim and follow any confirmation prompt shown by your build.
  • Monitor server performance and console errors.
  • Restart and regenerate DynMap data if that plugin is installed.
  • Test the world, border, builds, and edge behavior before retiring the backup.
