How to Fix “Token Can’t Be Used Yet” on a Minecraft Bedrock Server

The Minecraft Bedrock “Token can’t be used yet” message is usually caused by clock skew. Sync the player device and server time, verify the time zone, and use validation leeway only as a carefully limited last resort.

The Minecraft Bedrock message “Token can’t be used yet” usually means the clock that issued your sign-in token is ahead of the clock checking it. Sync the date, time, and time zone on the device running Minecraft, then make sure the server clock is synchronized as well. A token that failed because its not-before time was in the future will often work a few seconds later, but repeated failures indicate clock skew that should be corrected.

This guide covers the practical fix for token can’t be used yet Minecraft Bedrock errors on Windows, Apple devices, Android, and hosted or self-managed servers. It also explains why a small validation grace period can help in unusual cases, and why it should not replace accurate time synchronization.

What “Token Can’t Be Used Yet” means

Bedrock uses short-lived authentication tokens when you sign in and connect to services or multiplayer servers. Tokens can include a nbf (not-before) time: the earliest instant at which a validator is allowed to accept them. If the issuing system’s clock says 12:00:00 but the device or server validating the token says 11:59:20, the token appears to be from the future and is rejected as “not yet valid.”

The exact internal component that generates this Bedrock message has not been publicly documented in the sources available for this guide, so the connection to the JWT nbf check is an informed explanation rather than an official Mojang or Microsoft statement. The practical symptom is consistent: the client and validator disagree about the current time. The error may disappear after seconds if the clocks are only slightly apart, then return when a new token is issued.

This is normally a time-synchronization problem, not an account ban. A valid account, server allowlist, or permission setting cannot make a token whose start time is still in the future pass a clock check.

Fastest fix for a Bedrock token error

  1. Close Minecraft Bedrock completely. On a console or mobile device, also remove it from the recent-apps or suspended-apps view.
  2. Turn on automatic date and time on the device you use to play.
  3. Turn on automatic time-zone selection, or choose the correct time zone manually if automatic detection is wrong.
  4. Run the operating system’s manual synchronization action, where available.
  5. Restart the device, then start Minecraft and try the server again.
  6. If the error remains, ask the server owner or hosting provider to verify that the server’s system clock is synchronized.

Do not repeatedly sign out, reset your Microsoft account, or reinstall Minecraft before checking the clocks. Those actions do not correct a not-before time mismatch.

Fix the player device clock

Windows 11

  1. Right-click the clock on the taskbar and select Adjust date and time.
  2. In Time & language > Date & time, enable Set time automatically.
  3. Enable Set time zone automatically if Windows identifies your location correctly. If it selects the wrong region, turn that option off and select your actual time zone from the list.
  4. Press Sync now in the additional settings area. Wait for Windows to report a successful synchronization.
  5. Reopen Minecraft Bedrock and test the connection.

The displayed clock should show the correct local time, but the important value for token validation is the underlying system time. A wrong time zone can make the local display look plausible while still indicating the wrong absolute time, so check both the clock and the selected zone.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Time & Language > Date & time.
  2. Enable Set time automatically.
  3. Enable Set time zone automatically when the detected zone is correct.
  4. If Windows chooses the wrong zone, disable automatic time-zone selection and choose the current zone manually.
  5. Use Sync now, if that control is present, then restart Minecraft.

Windows menu labels can vary slightly after feature updates. Look for the same three controls—automatic time, time zone, and a manual synchronization button—even if their position on the page changes.

Apple devices

On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Date & Time and enable Set Automatically. If the automatic setting is unavailable, check that the device has network access and that any restriction preventing location or time-zone detection is removed. Reopen Minecraft after the clock updates.

On a Mac, open System Settings > General > Date & Time and enable the option to set the date and time automatically. Confirm the time zone is detected correctly. Older macOS releases use System Preferences > Date & Time, but the controls serve the same purpose.

Android phones and tablets

  1. Open Settings > System > Date & time. Some manufacturers place this under General management or a similar section.
  2. Enable Set time automatically or Use network-provided time.
  3. Enable automatic time zone, or select the correct zone manually if the automatic result is wrong.
  4. Close Minecraft, wait for the clock to update, and launch the game again.

Android wording differs by manufacturer and version. The setting to look for is network-provided or automatic time; changing only the visible clock without correcting the time source may not solve the validation failure.

Check the Minecraft server’s clock

The same mismatch can originate on the server. If your device is synchronized but every player receives the error—or players on different devices see it at the same time—the server is the stronger suspect. Shockbyte’s Bedrock troubleshooting guidance likewise states that the client and server dates and times need to match for a player to join.

Hosted server

Contact the host and report the exact message, the approximate time it occurred, and your time zone. Ask the host to verify that the machine running the Bedrock server is synchronized with a network time service. Hosting panels may show a server time, but that display is not always proof that the underlying operating-system clock is correct.

Self-managed Linux or Windows server

Verify the operating system clock rather than only the game configuration. Network Time Protocol (NTP) or a service such as chrony is the normal way to keep a server synchronized. Confirm that the time service is enabled, has reached a usable time source, and is not blocked by the server’s firewall or network policy. After correcting the system clock, restart the Bedrock service if it cached authentication state, then test with a newly issued login token.

Do not “fix” the issue by changing only the server’s displayed time zone. Time zones affect presentation; token comparisons use an absolute time value. The server’s clock must be accurate, regardless of whether it displays UTC or a local zone.

How to tell whether the client or server is wrong

  • Only one player is affected: check that player’s device first.
  • Several players on unrelated networks are affected: investigate the server clock or its authentication path.
  • The error clears after waiting briefly: the clocks may be only slightly skewed, but synchronization is still the durable fix.
  • The error began after the server was moved, restored, or suspended: ask the host whether the virtual machine resumed with an inaccurate clock.

Why the error can be intermittent

A token’s not-before value is usually generated close to the time it is issued. If the validator is behind by a small amount, the token fails at first and then becomes acceptable when real time catches up. That explains reports that a connection works after waiting, restarting the game, or trying again.

Intermittency does not mean the account or server is randomly banning players. It means the skew is near the validator’s acceptance boundary. A fresh token can fail while an older token succeeds, depending on when each was created and which clock performed the check.

Compare the available fixes

Approach Where it acts Durability Effort Security impact
Automatic device time and time-zone synchronization Player’s phone, tablet, computer, or console Durable while the operating system can reach its time service Usually a few settings changes and a restart No added token exposure
Server NTP or chrony synchronization Host operating system running the Bedrock server Durable and appropriate for production servers Requires administrator or hosting-provider access No added token exposure
Waiting for the token to become valid Neither clock; it merely allows real time to catch up Temporary and unreliable Minimal Does not change validation security, but leaves the root cause unresolved
Validator clock-skew leeway Authentication or server validation layer Workaround until synchronization is corrected Requires software that exposes the setting Reduces strictness; an excessive window can extend the period in which a stolen token is accepted

Use validation leeway only as a last resort

Many JWT implementations permit a short clock-skew allowance when checking nbf and expiration times. A window of about 60 seconds is a common general-purpose choice, but it is not a confirmed Bedrock setting. Whether your Bedrock server software, proxy, or authentication component exposes such a control must be verified in that product’s current documentation.

Leeway should not be the first fix. It hides inaccurate clocks, can mask a failing time service, and broadens the period during which a stolen token might be accepted. Never choose a large allowance simply to make the message disappear. Synchronize both clocks first, and use a small allowance only when you administer the validator, understand its security consequences, and have no better way to accommodate unavoidable network or virtualization skew.

When changing the clock does not solve it

Confirm that the change actually took effect

  • Compare the device clock with a reliable current-time reference.
  • Check the selected time zone, not just the hour and minute.
  • After a manual change, wait for the automatic service to report a successful sync.
  • Restart Minecraft so it requests a new token instead of reusing an in-memory session.

Separate a token error from other connection failures

“Token can’t be used yet” points to a validity-time check. Different messages can indicate an expired session, a network failure, a server that is offline, an incompatible game version, or a permission problem. Record the exact wording rather than treating every sign-in or join failure as the same issue.

Test more than one client

Have another player try from a device whose automatic time is known to be correct. If that player joins successfully, focus on the original device. If both players fail at the same moment, provide the server administrator with the timestamps and ask for a server-clock check.

Escalate with useful information

When contacting a host or server administrator, include the Bedrock edition and platform, the server address, the exact error text, the time and time zone of the failed attempt, whether automatic time synchronization is enabled, and whether the error affects other players. This lets the administrator compare client and server logs without guessing which clock was wrong.

Prevent future “bedrock token can’t be used yet” failures

  • Leave automatic date, time, and time-zone synchronization enabled on player devices.
  • Keep the server operating system’s time service enabled after migrations, snapshots, reboots, or long suspensions.
  • Check time synchronization as part of server maintenance instead of changing the clock manually.
  • Document any authentication proxy or validator that applies clock-skew settings, including its configured allowance.
  • Use the smallest practical leeway and review it after software or hosting changes.

Operating-system menu names can change across Windows, Android, Apple, and console updates. If a label differs from the paths above, search that device’s settings for automatic date and time, network-provided time, or time zone; the underlying correction is the same.
