Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYou can translate a YouTube video in three different ways: localize its title and description, add subtitles or captions, or provide translated speech as another audio track. In YouTube Studio, first set the video’s original language, then choose the workflow that fits your audience and the access available to your channel and video.
Choose the kind of translation you need
These options solve different problems. Translated metadata helps viewers find and identify a video; captions display spoken words as text; dubbed audio lets viewers hear speech in another language.

| Option | What viewers get | What you need to provide |
|---|---|---|
| Translated title and description | A localized title and description that can appear to viewers using that language, including in search results. | Your translated text. |
| Captions or subtitles | Spoken content as text. Captions can also support deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. | Subtitle text, or a review of captions YouTube generates for the original spoken language. |
| Automatic dubbing | A generated translated audio track, when the creator and video are eligible and the language is available. | Review and publishing decisions for the generated track. |
| Uploaded multi-language audio | An alternate audio track in a language you choose, if the feature is available to your channel. | A separately recorded or produced audio-only dub. |
Set the video’s original language first
YouTube uses the original-language setting in caption and translation workflows. Confirm it before adding translations or relying on automatic dubbing. To check or change it, open the video’s language settings in YouTube Studio and select the language actually spoken in the video. YouTube’s guidance is at Change the language of your uploaded video.

Add captions or subtitles
Captions put speech into text, which can help viewers who do not understand the spoken language and viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing. YouTube may automatically create captions for the video’s original spoken language; you can also add subtitles yourself. In Studio, use the video’s Subtitles area to select a language and add or manage its subtitle track. Check the original-language setting if captions or translation options appear wrong or unavailable.
Review captions before relying on them. Speech recognition can have trouble with accents, background noise, names, specialist terms, and unclear speech. YouTube’s help on viewing audio, titles, and descriptions in preferred languages is available at Watch videos in your preferred language.

Use YouTube automatic dubbing
Automatic dubbing generates translated audio tracks for eligible creators and videos. YouTube says the feature is enabled by default for eligible creators; some channels may also see an early-access control if it is not enabled. Availability is not universal, and supported or experimental language pairs can change. Check the video’s Languages view in Studio for the options actually available to that video.
Review and publish a generated dub
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select the video.
- Open its Languages view and check whether automatic dubs are available.
- Choose whether generated dubs should publish automatically or require manual review, where those controls are available.
- Preview each available dub. Publish it if it is suitable, or unpublish or delete it if it is not.
YouTube lists possible reasons a video may not qualify: it is over 120 minutes long, contains little or no speech, has an unsupported or undetected source language, has speech pacing that prevents dubbing, or has a copyright claim. A generated dub can also mispronounce names or mishandle accents, dialects, idioms, jargon, background noise, or speech recognition. Review matters especially for educational, technical, legal, medical, or otherwise specialized content. YouTube says automatic dubs cannot be edited; if the original video language was set incorrectly, correcting it can lead to regenerated dubs. See YouTube’s automatic dubbing guidance.

Upload your own translated audio track
Multi-language audio is different from automatic dubbing: YouTube does not create the uploaded track for you. You must record the dub or arrange its production. The feature is limited to creators with access to Advanced features, and availability may vary.
- Prepare an audio-only dub in the target language for the video.
- In YouTube Studio, open the video’s language or multi-language audio controls and add the language.
- Upload the supported audio file and publish the track.
If an automatic dub already exists in that language, YouTube says you must delete it before uploading a replacement track. For current access and workflow details, see Add multi-language features to your videos.

Choose between captions, generated dubbing, and prepared audio
- Use translated metadata when viewers need a title and description in their language, whether or not you translate the speech.
- Use captions or subtitles when text is sufficient, when you need accessibility support, or when spoken translation is not practical.
- Try automatic dubbing when it is available for the video and language, and you can review the result before relying on it.
- Use prepared multi-language audio when your channel has access and you need editorial control over the recording, wording, and delivery. It takes a recording or localization process, but the track is yours to produce.
Consider channel and video access, the required language pair, whether text or spoken audio best serves the audience, the accuracy required, and the time and cost of producing a track. YouTube does not provide a universal cost estimate or comparative accuracy benchmarks for these options.
What viewers can choose—and what translation can’t promise
Viewers can set preferred languages for audio, titles, and descriptions, and switch among audio tracks available in the player. YouTube uses language-related signals to match content to viewers, and the version selected may not depend only on a viewer’s primary language setting. Translated metadata can help a video appear in search for people using that language, but translation alone does not guarantee reach or ranking.
