For a screenshot of the entire page, use Chrome DevTools’ More options > Capture a full size screenshot; Capture screenshot captures only the current viewport. If the live page is clipped too, compare responsive viewport widths and inspect the affected element’s CSS.
First identify where the edge is being cut off
Compare the page in Chrome with the saved screenshot. This simple check separates a page-layout problem from a capture problem, though it does not by itself identify the exact cause.

- The live page is clipped too: investigate the viewport width, responsive layout, and the element’s CSS.
- The live page looks complete, but the saved image is clipped: check whether you captured only the viewport, or whether the screenshot tool or automation uses a crop area that ends too soon.
If you did not use Chrome DevTools—for example, you used an operating-system screenshot shortcut or a browser extension—check that tool’s capture mode and crop boundaries as well. DevTools’ menu instructions apply specifically to DevTools captures.

Choose the screenshot mode that matches the result you want
Chrome DevTools offers two distinct screenshot commands. Open DevTools, select More options, then choose the appropriate command:
#1 Best Overall
| Command | What it captures | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Capture screenshot | The current viewport: the area visible in the browser at that moment. | A screen view at a particular scroll position, such as a bug report. |
| Capture a full size screenshot | The whole page, including content outside the current viewport. | A full-page image when the intended result is the page from top to bottom. |
Chrome documents these commands in its Device Mode guide. A full-size capture is the right first choice when the desired output is the entire page; it is not a CSS fix if the page itself overflows or clips content.
Check whether the page width or a breakpoint changes the layout
A page can render differently at different viewport widths. Use DevTools Device Mode to compare the width where the edge disappears with a wider viewport and with widths near the page’s responsive breakpoints.
- Open DevTools and turn on the device toolbar to enter Device Mode.
- Use the responsive viewport controls to enter a width and height, or drag the viewport handles.
- Enable Show media queries to display breakpoint bars, then test widths around a relevant breakpoint.
- At each width, check whether the live page’s right edge is visible and whether the layout changes.
If the edge appears or disappears as the viewport crosses a breakpoint, that points toward a width-specific layout or responsive CSS issue. It does not identify which CSS rule should change; inspect the affected element before editing styles. Chrome describes Device Mode sizing and breakpoint controls in its Device Mode guide.
Recommended Free Tools
Inspect the element and its applied CSS
If the page itself is clipped, inspect the element at the cut edge before changing CSS. Select it with DevTools’ Inspect tool, then review its rules in Elements > Styles and its resolved values in Computed.
- Check the element’s applied width, margins, and padding.
- Review overflow rules on the element and relevant ancestors.
- Compare the applied rules and computed values at the viewport width where clipping occurs and at one where it does not.
Do not remove an overflow rule or force a new width without confirming what that rule is meant to do: the appropriate change depends on the page’s intended layout. See Chrome’s guide to viewing and changing CSS for the Styles and Computed workflow.
If the screenshot is made by automation, check its capture bounds
When only an automated capture is cropped, inspect the screenshot request rather than changing the page’s CSS blindly. Chrome DevTools Protocol’s Page.captureScreenshot accepts a clip rectangle and a captureBeyondViewport option. The clip rectangle specifies the capture region; if its width or position ends before the intended content, the output can omit the right edge. The Page viewport type also exposes the capture rectangle’s x, y, width, height, and scale.
These protocol settings are relevant to scripts and tools using the protocol, not to an ordinary manual DevTools screenshot. Check the exact rectangle and beyond-viewport setting your automation sends, and compare them with the content you intend to capture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfirm mobile-only problems on a real device
Device Mode is a first-order approximation of how a page looks and feels on a mobile device; it is not a physical phone. If the clipping appears only under mobile conditions and the behavior matters, confirm it on actual hardware. Chrome documents remote debugging for inspecting a page running on a physical device in its remote debugging guide.
Chrome’s separate documentation about viewport resize behavior on Chrome for Android explains the layout and visual viewports, including their relationship during pinch zoom. That is useful context for mobile viewport behavior, but it does not establish the cause of a particular desktop screenshot crop.

If you need a screenshot through an API rather than diagnosing a local Chrome capture, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot from one GET request. For example, with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

One-click scans. No signup required.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before the shot, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Common causes and fixes at a glance
| What you observe | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot omits content outside the visible browser area. | Whether you used Capture screenshot or Capture a full size screenshot. | Use Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page. |
| The live page and screenshot both lose the edge. | Responsive viewport width and the affected element’s applied and computed CSS. | Compare widths around breakpoints; inspect width, spacing, and overflow rules before editing. |
| The live page is complete, but an automated image is cropped. | The automation’s clip rectangle and captureBeyondViewport setting. | Check that the capture rectangle includes the intended right edge. |
| The issue occurs only on mobile. | Whether it also occurs on a physical device. | Verify on hardware if the behavior is consequential; Device Mode is an approximation. |
What information helps pinpoint a case-specific cause
The correct fix depends on the capture method and what the page looks like before capture. To diagnose a specific report, establish the page URL, Chrome version, operating system, capture method, screenshot file, and whether the live page is clipped too. Without those details, the steps above narrow the cause but cannot establish which one applies.
