How to Use Adobe Character Animator for Live Streaming

Use Character Animator’s Stream workspace and Live Output preferences to send a tracked puppet scene to a broadcast application or compatible device, then rehearse audio, framing, and sync.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream a tracked Character Animator puppet, open the scene you want to broadcast, choose a live-output route in the Stream workspace’s Live Output preferences, and click Stream Live at the bottom of the Scene panel. Send that output to a receiving broadcast app or compatible video device, route audio deliberately, and rehearse the complete setup before going live. The scene output is for a live performance; it is different from a service that loops an uploaded recording.

What Character Animator sends to your broadcast

Adobe Character Animator can send the current scene to another application or device for a live production. Adobe documents Mercury Transmit, NewTek NDI output, and third-party video hardware as possible routes, depending on the installed setup. The receiver can then combine the character scene with other broadcast elements.

There is an important framing constraint: only the current scene displayed in the Scene panel is streamed. Anything outside that panel is not rendered into the live output. The Scene panel’s background color setting is not sent as a background image, either. The output carries alpha transparency; if the receiving device or application does not handle alpha, the background appears black.

Prepare the puppet, scene, and performance inputs

Open the scene you intend to broadcast

Open or create a scene containing the puppet and any audio files or recorded takes needed for the performance. Check the Scene panel framing before streaming: the scene visible there is what the receiver gets, not the rest of the Character Animator workspace.

Set up camera and microphone control

Character Animator uses camera, microphone, and mouse inputs to control puppet behavior. Calibrate the camera’s tracking rest pose before performing, then check that the puppet responds as intended. For a single-character broadcast, Adobe says most USB microphones and audio interfaces work. It recommends a high-quality microphone with background-noise rejection and a quiet environment; use headphones when the performer needs to monitor audio.

Choose a live-output route and start streaming

  1. Switch to the Stream workspace. Confirm that the intended scene is open in the Scene panel.
  2. Open Live Output preferences. Choose the output device or application route that matches your setup. Adobe documents Mercury Transmit, NewTek NDI, and third-party video hardware as options; availability depends on the installed configuration.
  3. Start output from the Scene panel. Click Stream Live at the bottom of the panel. Keep the scene framed as required, because content outside the panel is not part of the output.
  4. Configure the receiving application or device. Add or select the corresponding video source there, then compose the character with titles, backgrounds, or other production elements as needed.
  5. Check transparency in the receiver. If you expect the character to appear over another background, verify that the receiving path supports alpha. If it does not, expect black where the background would otherwise be.

Route audio and check lip sync

Video and audio may travel through separate parts of the production chain, so confirm where the microphone is captured and where the final mix is made. If the scene video and audio are combined and the voice is out of sync, add delay to the audio in the receiving application or through external audio hardware. Adobe describes roughly 60 milliseconds as a usual starting estimate—not a guaranteed setting for every computer or broadcast chain. Rehearse with the actual performer and adjust by listening and watching the result.

For a straightforward single-character setup, check that the microphone sounds clean and determine whether the same audio device can be used by Character Animator and the broadcast application. Monitor through headphones if needed, and avoid a noisy room that can undermine voice capture.

Plan a multi-character NDI setup

For a performance spread across multiple computers, decide how the machines, audio, and network will fit together before configuring the live output. Adobe recommends wired microphones and a professional audio interface for each machine, with Gigabit Ethernet over Cat 5e or Cat 6 between the computers and a switch. Confirm that the network connections and audio routing support the intended setup; the single-computer workflow should not be assumed to cover every multi-machine arrangement.

Rehearse the complete broadcast chain

  • Test with the actual voice talent, puppet, microphone, receiving application or device, and intended streaming platform.
  • Confirm that the expected scene—not a different open scene—is on air and correctly framed.
  • Check how the receiver handles transparency and whether the final background is correct.
  • Listen for room noise and microphone problems, and verify voice-to-mouth sync after routing audio.
  • Run the entire chain before the performance rather than relying on a workspace preview alone.

Adobe specifically recommends testing the whole setup with the voice talent and on the platform where the performance will be streamed.

Troubleshooting common live-output problems

The receiving application does not show the character

Check that Stream Live is active, that the intended scene is open in the Scene panel, and that the receiver is using the corresponding output source. Output availability depends on the selected route and installed devices or applications.

Parts of the design are missing

Move or reframe content that must appear so it is inside the Scene panel’s current scene view. Content outside that panel is not rendered into the stream.

The character has a black background

The output carries alpha rather than the Scene panel’s background color setting. Check whether the receiving application or device supports alpha; if it does not, the background appears black. Composite a background in the receiver if that is part of the production design.

The voice sounds late or does not match the mouth

Check audio routing and monitor the complete output path. If audio and video are combined, try adding audio delay in the receiving application or external hardware. Treat Adobe’s roughly 60-millisecond guidance as a starting estimate, then determine the right amount by rehearsing the actual setup.

Camera tracking or audio is unreliable

Check the camera rest-pose calibration and the microphone input before troubleshooting the output route. Test in a quiet environment and monitor through headphones where appropriate; a high-quality microphone with background-noise rejection can help reduce unwanted room sound.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping a YouTube channel live from an uploaded recording or playlist; it does not stream a live camera or a live Character Animator performance. For a finished Character Animator recording you want to loop on YouTube, upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
