What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In Photoshop desktop, select the layer or content you want to change, then choose Edit > Free Transform or press Ctrl+T on Windows or Command+T on macOS. Use the bounding box or the Options bar to scale, rotate, skew, distort, or adjust perspective; choose Warp for a bend or reshape. Check the aspect-ratio control before scaling, and commit with Enter/Return when the result is right.
Start a Free Transform in Photoshop desktop
- Select the content. Choose the layer in the Layers panel, or select the shape, path, or image area you intend to edit. If the image is on a locked Background layer, convert it to a regular layer first.
- Open the transform controls. Choose Edit > Free Transform, or press Ctrl+T on Windows / Command+T on macOS. You can also show Transform Controls with the Move tool for pixel content or the Path Selection tool for vector content.
- Make the change. Drag handles for direct adjustments, or enter values in the Options bar for precise scale, position, or rotation.
- Commit or cancel. Press Enter on Windows or Return on macOS, or use the commit control. Press Esc to cancel.
Adobe documents the desktop controls and transform workflow in its guide to transforming images, shapes, and paths.

Choose the right transform for the change
| Operation | What it changes | Best control |
|---|---|---|
| Scale | Width, height, or both dimensions | Drag a handle or enter W and H percentages; link the dimensions to retain their ratio. |
| Rotate | Angle around a pivot point | Drag just outside the bounding box or enter degrees in the Options bar. |
| Skew | Slant along an axis | Drag a side handle with the appropriate modifier key. |
| Distort | Move corners or edges independently | Drag a handle freely to stretch or compress the content. |
| Perspective | Apparent depth, by moving corners in relation to one another | Use Free Transform for a quick adjustment, or Perspective Warp when working with defined planes. |
| Warp | Bending or reshaping across part or all of the content | Use a preset or custom mesh; grid density and split lines provide more local control. |
| Flip or fixed-angle rotation | Mirroring or standard quarter-turn/half-turn changes | Choose the corresponding command from Edit > Transform. |
Adobe lists Scale, Rotate, Skew, Distort, Perspective, Warp, flip, and fixed-angle rotation among the transformation options. After applying a transform, Edit > Transform > Again becomes available to repeat it. See Adobe’s transformation commands and transformation options.
Resize without stretching
Before dragging a corner, inspect Maintain aspect ratio in the Options bar. When enabled, corner dragging scales the content proportionally; when disabled, width and height can change independently. The link icon between W and H fields likewise keeps their relationship when you enter percentages.
#1 Best Overall
Photoshop remembers the last scaling behavior, so do not rely on a remembered default. Shift toggles proportional behavior during a transform, but checking the visible control is the safer way to confirm what the current operation will do. Users who prefer the older non-proportional default can enable the Legacy Free Transform preference.
Enter exact position, angle, and pivot values
Use the Options bar when a change needs to be repeatable rather than estimated by eye. Enter values for W and H to scale, X and Y to position, or degrees to rotate. Change the reference point in the Options bar if scaling or rotation should pivot around a point other than the center.
For direct rotation, drag just outside the bounding border. Holding Shift constrains the drag to 15-degree increments. For handle-based adjustments, the desktop shortcuts are:

Warp an image with a mesh
Use Warp when a layer needs to bend or reshape rather than move as a rigid rectangle. The mesh lets you adjust a broad area or control a smaller region. A denser grid and split lines help isolate where the bend occurs; presets are a quicker starting point for common shapes. Adobe’s Transform Warp guide describes the mesh-based controls.
Fix perspective with Perspective Warp
For a surface that should read as a plane—such as a wall, sign, or tabletop—use Perspective Warp rather than treating the whole image as a freely distorted rectangle. Define the plane or planes, then adjust their corners. Shift-clicking an edge can keep it straight while you adjust a plane; automatic controls can level near-horizontal lines, straighten near-vertical lines, or warp to both. Adobe explains this plane-based workflow in its Perspective Warp instructions.

Perspective Warp is distinct from the Perspective option in Free Transform: the former is organized around defined planes, while the latter is a simpler corner-based transform. For other reshaping jobs, Adobe groups tools such as Liquify, Puppet Warp, and Distort/Skew separately from correction-focused tools such as Perspective Warp and Lens Correction. Choose the narrowest tool that matches the intended edit; see Adobe’s overview of distortion tools.

Adobe warns that bitmap content can become slightly less sharp each time a transform is committed. When practical, make several changes in one Free Transform session and commit once rather than repeatedly resizing and committing the raster layer. If you expect to resize iteratively, convert the source layer to a Smart Object first; Smart Objects preserve image quality through repeated transformations.

Photoshop on the web: use its Transform panel
Photoshop on the web has a separate workflow. Open Size & position > Transform, choose Free transform, Skew, Distort, or Perspective, adjust the bounding-box handles, and select Done. Desktop modifier-key instructions should not be assumed to apply to the web or iPad. Adobe’s web editing guide covers this panel.
