If you only want to stop future beta updates, turn Beta Updates off in Settings. If iOS 27 beta is already installed and you want to return to public iOS now, Apple’s documented method is to erase and restore your iPhone with a computer. That restore deletes the device’s data, and a backup made on beta software may not work on an earlier iOS version.
iOS 27 began rolling out on September 14, 2026, according to Apple’s announcement and its iOS 27 page. The version available to your iPhone may depend on what Software Update offers.

Choose what you mean by “remove the beta”
| What you want | What to do | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Stop receiving future beta updates | Turn Beta Updates off in Settings. | Future beta updates stop; the beta already installed remains on the iPhone. |
| Remove the installed beta and install public iOS | Use a computer to put the iPhone in recovery mode, then choose Restore. | The iPhone is erased and restored to the current non-beta iOS version. |
| An expired beta shows an available update | Install the update shown in Settings > General > Software Update. | Apple’s instruction applies when an update is offered; it is not a universal no-erase downgrade method. |
These are Apple’s distinct routes in its beta removal instructions. Turning off updates does not immediately uninstall beta software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTurn off future beta updates
On iOS 16.4 or later
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates.
- Select Off.
On iOS 16.3.1 or earlier
Apple’s path is Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. Select the iOS Beta Software Profile and remove it. Removing a profile stops the device receiving public betas; it does not erase an installed beta. If beta software was installed using a computer, Apple says to restore iOS to remove it.

Erase and restore the iPhone to public iOS
Before you start, make sure you can use a computer with the latest macOS or the current Apple Devices app, and connect the iPhone to it. Apple’s instructions require a physical connection but do not specify a cable type or connector; use a data-capable cable that fits both devices if needed.
Check whether you can restore a backup
Plan on the restore erasing the iPhone. Apple warns that backups made while using beta software may not work with an earlier iOS version. If you want your data back after returning to public software, use an archived backup made on an earlier compatible iOS version. If you have only a beta-era backup, it may not restore after the downgrade.

Enter recovery mode and restore
- Connect the iPhone to a Mac running the latest macOS, or to a computer with the current Apple Devices app.
- Enter recovery mode using the button sequence for your iPhone model. For iPhone 8 and later, press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the recovery-mode screen appears. For other models, follow Apple’s model-specific instructions.
- When the computer offers the recovery options, choose Restore. This erases the iPhone and installs the current publicly released, non-beta iOS version.
- After the restore, set up the iPhone and select an archived backup made on an earlier compatible iOS version, if you have one. If prompted, sign in to your Apple Account to disable Activation Lock.
If the software download takes more than 15 minutes and the iPhone exits recovery mode, let the download finish, then repeat the recovery-mode step and continue the restore.
If the beta has expired and Settings offers an update
Apple says an iPhone or iPad indicating that a software update is available is running an expired beta. Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the offered update. This is the route Apple gives for an update that Settings actually offers; it does not replace the erase-and-restore procedure for removing an installed beta in other circumstances.

Why the public version may differ by device
Apple says iOS 27 began rolling out September 14, 2026. That establishes the public release, but not that every iPhone receives the same update at the same time. Check Settings > General > Software Update for the version offered to your device.
