From there, use handles and modifier keys to scale, rotate, skew, distort, or apply perspective; press Enter/Return to commit or Esc to cancel. Adobe also documents the menu route Edit > Free Transform.
Open Free Transform with the keyboard
- Select the target in the document or Layers panel. Free Transform acts on the active layer or selection. If the target is a locked Background layer, convert it to a regular layer before using the separate Transform workflow Adobe describes.
- Press Ctrl+T on Windows or Command+T on macOS. Alternatively, choose Edit > Free Transform. These instructions apply to Photoshop desktop; Photoshop on the web uses a separate interface and a Size & position > Transform workflow.

Scale and rotate the selected content
Scale
Drag a corner or side handle to resize. In current desktop Photoshop, proportional scaling is controlled by the Maintain aspect ratio icon in the Options bar. Shift toggles proportional behavior while transforming, and Photoshop remembers the last scaling behavior, so check the icon rather than assuming an older tutorial’s default applies.

Rotate
Move the pointer just outside the transform boundary until the curved rotation pointer appears, then drag. Hold Shift to constrain rotation to 15-degree increments. For a precise angle, enter degrees in the rotation field in the Options bar.
Reshape with skew, distort, perspective, or warp
- Skew: Hold Ctrl on Windows or Command on macOS and drag a side handle.
- Distort: Hold Ctrl on Windows or Command on macOS and drag a handle to move it freely.
- Perspective: Hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift on Windows or Command+Option+Shift on macOS and drag a corner.
- Warp: Choose Switch Between Free Transform And Warp Modes in the Options bar, then drag control points or select a preset Warp style.
For a named operation instead of the continuous Free Transform workflow, choose it from Edit > Transform. Adobe’s guide covers scale, rotation, and perspective adjustments.

Commit, cancel, or duplicate while transforming
- Press Enter on Windows or Return on macOS, or choose the Commit control, to apply the transformation.
- Press Esc or choose Cancel to discard it.
- To duplicate the selected layer or selection and enter Free Transform, press Ctrl+Alt+T on Windows or Command+Option+T on macOS. See Adobe’s instructions for duplicating objects as you transform.
Use a menu command for a fixed flip or rotation
For a fixed orientation change, use Edit > Transform and choose 180°, 90° clockwise, 90° counterclockwise, Flip Horizontal, or Flip Vertical. Adobe documents these menu commands; its cited guide does not give a dedicated single-key shortcut for each. See Adobe’s rotate and flip instructions.
Preserve image quality during repeated transforms
Adobe warns that bitmap content becomes slightly less sharp each time you commit a transformation. If several adjustments are needed, make them in one transform operation before committing when possible. Adobe says Smart Objects preserve image quality through repeated transformations.
