To track QR campaigns, give every physical placement its own tagged destination URL, then compare website analytics with scan counts from a dynamic QR provider. Campaign tags show which placement brought visits to your site; provider-reported location can add context, but its precision depends on the service and should not be treated as exact GPS.
How QR scan tracking works
There are two measurement points. A QR platform may count a scan when someone opens a managed QR link or redirect. Your website analytics can then record a visit if the destination page loads and attribute it using campaign parameters in the URL. These totals can differ: a redirect may be recorded even if the page does not load, and a scan is not necessarily a person or a website session.

Google Analytics maps UTM values embedded in the destination URL to campaign dimensions. Its campaign URL documentation explains the fields and their reporting. A QR provider’s scan data is separate; check the provider’s documentation for which metrics it records and how long it retains them.
Build a campaign naming scheme
Decide in advance which URL field identifies the placement and which groups the wider campaign. Keep values consistent—typically lowercase with underscores or hyphens—so the same placement or campaign does not split into separate labels because of spelling or capitalization.

- utm_campaign: the overarching initiative, such as
fall_open_house. - utm_medium: the channel, held stable across related placements, such as
print. - utm_source: the specific placement, such as
store_windoworevent_flyer. - utm_content: an alternative field for distinguishing creative versions or placements when that suits your reporting plan.
These are practical example values, not a mandatory Google taxonomy. The important point is to use distinct values for placements you want to compare and shared values for the campaign elements you want to group.
Set up and test QR tracking
- Plan the labels. Choose the campaign, medium, and placement values before generating codes. Write down the exact spelling and use it consistently.
- Create a tagged destination for each placement. For example, keep
utm_medium=printandutm_campaign=fall_open_housefor all materials, while settingutm_source=store_windowfor a window code andutm_source=event_flyerfor a flyer. - Choose static or dynamic QR codes. A static code embeds its destination and cannot be changed after creation. A dynamic code uses a managed destination that can be edited after printing and may provide provider-side scan tracking. Confirm the selected service offers the metrics and retention period you need.
- Scan the actual printed artwork with a phone before the print run. Check that the camera opens the intended mobile-friendly page and that the tagged URL is intact. A browser click alone does not test the printed code or the phone-camera flow.
- Check both reporting systems. Verify that the QR provider records the expected scan event and that your website analytics attributes a loaded visit to the intended source, medium, and campaign.
What to compare in reports

Use the tagged destination to compare placements such as a store window, flyer, or table display while keeping their shared campaign labels stable. Do not interpret a reported location as exact physical GPS, a scan as a unique individual, or a redirect count as completed site visits.

When to use static versus dynamic codes
Use a static code when the destination is final and you do not need the QR provider to report redirect-level scan activity. Choose a dynamic code when you may need to correct or change a destination after printing, or when provider-side scan metrics matter. Provider capabilities differ, so check the service’s feature definitions and data-retention terms before relying on its reports.

Why scan counts and website sessions differ
A provider can register a request to its QR redirect before the visitor reaches your site. The page may fail to load, the visitor may leave, or analytics may not record a session. Conversely, a session report is not a raw count of camera scans. Treat the two systems as complementary: provider data describes QR-link activity, while destination analytics describes visits and subsequent site behavior.
