A pool cue—also called a pool stick or cue stick—is the tapered tool used to strike the cue ball. A typical two-piece cue has a shaft and a butt joined together; at the striking end, the tip sits above the ferrule. The right dimensions and care depend on the game and the particular cue, so there is no single fit or cleaning method for every player and model.
What is a pool cue, and what are its parts?
“Pool cue,” “pool stick,” and “cue stick” are names for the same tool, as Predator Cues explains. The main functional parts of a typical two-piece cue are:

- Tip: The small contact surface at the end of the cue that strikes the cue ball.
- Ferrule: The short piece directly beneath the tip.
- Shaft: The slender upper section, ending at the joint.
- Joint: The connection between the shaft and the butt.
- Butt: The lower section held by the player.
Some cue guides divide the assembly into more, smaller components than this. For a useful overview, it is clearer to name the main functional sections than to suggest every guide uses one fixed parts count.

Start by identifying the game and the equipment convention it uses. American pool, English pool, and snooker do not necessarily use the same cue dimensions. Table clearance, reach, comfort, and the way you deliver your stroke also affect fit. Published figures vary by source and market, so treat them as guidance rather than a universal specification.

| Published guidance | Figures | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| LeaguePool, updated Aug. 24, 2026 | Two-piece maple cue; 19 oz; medium leather tip, 12.5–13 mm | The publisher’s suggested starting setup for most players, not a rule or independently tested standard. |
| My Pool Cue, June 11, 2026 | Typical ranges of 57–59 in and 17–21 oz | Broad ranges from that guide, not a governing standard. |
| Perry Cues, UK FAQ | Smaller tip ranges are given for pool and snooker than in the US-market guide | Different game and market conventions mean the figures should not be combined into one definitive tip-size range. |
For a first comparison, weigh the practical trade-offs together rather than choosing by one number:
- Length and clearance: Check whether you can stroke freely around your table, including near rails and walls.
- Weight and balance: Consider what feels controllable through your normal stroke; published recommendations do not establish a universally best weight.
- Tip size and material: Match these to your game and intended use, and compare cues made for the same market or discipline.
- Shaft, wrap, and joint: These affect feel and the way the cue is assembled. Compatibility matters if you plan to mix components.
- Budget: Compare cues with similar specifications and intended use, rather than assuming price alone establishes fit.
What is the white part at the top of a pool cue called?
If you mean the narrow piece immediately below the tip, it is the ferrule. The tip is the part at the very end that contacts the cue ball. The ferrule is not the tip, although the two are adjacent at the striking end.

How do you clean or repair a pool cue?
There is no single cleaning procedure established for every cue material. Wood, fiberglass, and graphite cues may call for different products or care, so follow the cue maker’s instructions for your specific model rather than applying an unverified chemical or abrasive method. ChampionCues lists care products for these materials, but that retailer guidance does not establish one universal cleaner.

ChampionCues advises measuring the ferrule diameter when selecting a replacement. That measurement is a useful check, not proof that any tip with a matching diameter will fit every cue; confirm the maker’s specifications or ask a qualified cue repairer if uncertain.
