Connect the old console to the Xbox network, let the game finish saving and uploading, then sign in to the new console with the same Microsoft/Xbox account and start the compatible game. The Series X|S console should download the cloud copy when the game starts.
Xbox 360 saves use the same basic idea but have an extra requirement: the game must be on Xbox’s backward-compatibility list, and the save must already exist in Xbox cloud storage. A USB drive or network transfer can move installed games and apps; neither is a substitute for cloud synchronization of saved progress.

What transfers, and what does not
Xbox treats an installed game and its saved progress as separate things. An installed game is software that can be copied between consoles or stored on an external drive. A save is the profile, checkpoint, career, world or settings data associated with your account and that title. For Xbox One and supported Xbox 360 games, Xbox’s roaming system is what carries that progress between consoles.

The relationship is title-dependent: the game must support the relevant console versions, and you must be signed in to Xbox network with the account that owns the save.

Xbox 360 games add backward compatibility to the process. Series X|S supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles, not every game released for those consoles. A 360 save that exists only on the old console’s hard drive or memory unit is not automatically available to the Series console; it must have an Xbox-cloud copy that the backward-compatible version can retrieve.
| What you want to move | Correct mechanism | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One saved progress | Xbox cloud synchronization | Use the same Microsoft/Xbox account and a title that supports the Xbox One-to-Series X|S relationship. |
| Xbox 360 saved progress | Xbox cloud synchronization through the backward-compatible game | The title must be supported on Xbox Series X|S, and the save must be in Xbox cloud storage. |
| Installed games and apps | Network transfer or USB storage | These methods reduce downloading time but do not independently convert or upload saves. |
Prepare the old Xbox before you move anything
Keep the Xbox One or Xbox 360 available until you have opened the game on the Series console and checked the expected save. A console can appear to have finished saving while a newer local change is still waiting to synchronize. Do not reset, sell or wipe the old console until verification is complete.
Use the account that created the save
Write down the exact Microsoft/Xbox account used to play the game. A console can contain several profiles, and signing in with a different account can make a correct cloud save look missing. The account must be signed in to Xbox network, not merely present as an offline profile.

Connect the old console to Xbox network
Connect the old console to the internet and allow it to sign in to Xbox network. If it has been offline, launch the game while connected and let it reach its normal menu or gameplay screen. Make a small, deliberate save if the game supports manual saving, then wait long enough for the console to complete synchronization. Avoid switching profiles during this step.
Check the game version and support
For an Xbox One game, confirm that the title is available on Series X|S in the form you intend to use. For an Xbox 360 game, check Microsoft’s current backward-compatibility list before troubleshooting a save. Compatibility is selective, and features can vary by title. If the game is not supported, the Series console cannot run its 360 environment to retrieve that save.
Transfer an Xbox One save to Xbox Series X or Series S
- Finish the final session on Xbox One. Connect the console to Xbox network, open the game and allow every current change to save. If there is a manual save command, use it and wait for the game to return to its normal menu or finish its saving indicator.
- Leave the old console online. Do not immediately disconnect it, reset it or remove the profile. Keeping it available gives you a way to confirm the checkpoint and repeat synchronization if the first attempt was interrupted.
- Set up the Series X|S with the identical account. Sign in with the same Microsoft/Xbox account used on Xbox One. If the new console offers to sync data when the game starts, choose the cloud option that contains the latest save rather than an older local copy.
- Install or start the compatible game. Install the digital title, insert the Xbox One disc in a Series X console when the title supports disc use, or use the appropriate backward-compatible edition. Series S is digital-only and has no disc drive, so a disc by itself cannot install or authenticate a game on that console.
- Wait for synchronization to finish. Launch the game while the Series console is online. Xbox should download the cloud save before or during startup. Do not quit the game or power off the console while the synchronization message or progress indicator is active.
- Load and inspect the expected data. Open the profile, campaign, world or checkpoint you last used on Xbox One. Check more than the title screen: confirm the most recent mission, inventory, level or other unmistakable progress.
- Only then erase the old console. Once the expected data is present on Series X|S, you can reset or sell the old console. If the save is not correct, keep the old console intact and work through the troubleshooting section below.
System-software labels can change. Microsoft’s current “Move from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S” guide is the appropriate reference when a menu name differs from the wording above.
Transfer an Xbox 360 save to Series X|S
The 360 path is more restrictive because the Series console runs only selected Xbox 360 games through backward compatibility. The save is not copied as an arbitrary file from a 360 hard drive; the compatible game retrieves the cloud version associated with your account.

1. Confirm the title is backward compatible
Look up the exact game on Microsoft’s Xbox backward-compatibility list. Different releases, regions or disc editions can have different support, and a title that runs on Xbox One is not automatically guaranteed to run on Series X|S. If the game is absent from the supported list, there is no supported way to open its 360 save on the Series console.
2. Put the save in Xbox cloud storage
On the Xbox 360, sign in with the same account you will use on Series X|S and connect to Xbox network. Start the game, load the local save and allow the game to save or exit normally while online. The goal is to create a current cloud copy; a save that remains only on the 360’s local hard drive or memory unit cannot be discovered by the Series console.
If the 360 has several profiles, verify the profile shown inside the game before you close it. Uploading a different profile’s save will not make the desired character or campaign appear under another account.
3. Start the backward-compatible version on Series X|S
Sign in to Series X|S with the same Microsoft/Xbox account. Install the supported game or insert its disc into a Series X console. Series S cannot accept an Xbox 360 disc because it is digital-only; you need a digital entitlement for the supported title.

4. Let the 360 environment retrieve the save
Launch the game while online and accept the cloud synchronization prompt if one appears. The game may display an Xbox 360-style interface or a short synchronization message before reaching its main menu. Wait for that process to complete, then load the profile and checkpoint you recognize.
5. Verify before clearing the 360
Check a distinctive piece of progress, such as the latest mission, unlocked character or campaign chapter. Do not rely solely on a profile name, because multiple saves can share similar names. Keep the 360 and its local storage untouched until the correct data has been opened on Series X|S.
Cloud sync, network transfer and USB storage compared
Choose the method based on what you are trying to move. Cloud synchronization is the save-transfer method. Network transfer and USB storage are primarily installation-management methods.

| Method | Moves | Best use | What it cannot guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud save synchronization | Saved progress associated with a supported title and account | Moving Xbox One or supported Xbox 360 progress to Series X|S | It cannot make an unsupported game compatible or merge saves from different accounts. |
| Network transfer | Installed games and apps between consoles on the same network | Avoiding a second download when both consoles are nearby | It does not replace cloud synchronization or convert a save for a different edition. |
| USB external storage | Installed games and compatible apps; supported games can run from external storage | Reducing download time or freeing internal space | It is not a standalone save-backup device for this migration. |
Using network transfer
Xbox’s network-transfer workflow is designed to copy installed games and apps from one console to another over a local network. It can be useful when a large game is already installed on the old Xbox, but launch the title on Series X|S while online afterward so the save can synchronize. A successful game copy does not prove that the newest save has transferred.
Using a USB external drive
Xbox Wire’s storage guidance describes USB 3.1 storage for Series X|S and says Xbox One, backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games can be played directly from an external hard drive. That makes an Xbox-compatible USB external hard drive useful for carrying installations and avoiding a large download. It does not turn the drive into an independent save archive, and copying an installed game does not convert its save into a separate optimized Series X|S edition.
After moving an installation from USB, connect the Series console to Xbox network, sign in with the correct account and start the game. Saved progress still depends on the title’s supported platform relationship and the cloud copy.
Edition and compatibility limits to check
Backward compatibility is title-specific
Series X|S supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games in addition to Xbox One games. The list is not universal, and individual features can differ. A save-transfer problem can therefore be a compatibility limitation rather than a damaged save. Confirm the exact title before trying repeated downloads or resets.
Series S is digital-only
Xbox Series S has no optical disc drive. An Xbox One or Xbox 360 disc cannot be inserted to start a game on it. You need a digital license for a supported version. Series X includes a disc drive, but the disc still has to correspond to a supported title.
A different Series X|S edition may have a different save relationship
Do not assume that every edition uses identical save data merely because the title name is the same. Microsoft’s save-roaming requirements depend on the relationship supported by that title between Xbox One and Series X|S. If you installed a separate Series X|S edition, check that the game’s own migration or synchronization path supports the Xbox One save before deleting the older installation.
Account ownership and profiles matter
Cloud saves follow the account and title relationship, not a console’s physical storage alone. A family member’s profile, a guest profile or a second Microsoft account can legitimately show a different set of saves. Sign out of unintended profiles and retry with the account that created the original progress.

Why a save is missing on Series X|S
Most missing-save cases fit one of five conditions: the old console never uploaded its latest local save, the wrong account is active, the title is not backward compatible, a separate Series edition has a different supported save relationship, or Xbox network synchronization failed. Use the branch that matches what you observe rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
The save is older than expected
Return to the old console without erasing anything. Connect it to Xbox network, sign in to the correct account and open the game. Load the newest local checkpoint, make a fresh save and wait for synchronization to finish. Then close the game normally, start the title on Series X|S and wait for the cloud prompt or sync indicator to complete.

First verify the account on both consoles. Next confirm that the title is supported on Series X|S and that you launched the same supported version, not an unrelated release with a similar name. For an Xbox 360 game, confirm that the save was uploaded from the 360 rather than left only on its hard drive or memory unit.
The game keeps asking which save to use
Read the timestamps or device labels carefully before choosing. If the old console contains the newest progress and is still available, stop and synchronize it while online. Choosing an older local copy on the new console can overwrite the session you intended to keep. When the game provides no clear timestamp, preserve the old console and verify by opening each candidate after synchronization.
The game will not start on Series S
Check whether you are relying on a disc. Series S is digital-only, so a physical Xbox One or Xbox 360 copy cannot be inserted. Obtain the digital version of the supported title, then sign in with the account that owns the game and the save.
The title is installed from USB but the save is absent
Installation location is not the deciding factor for progress. Start the game while Series X|S is connected to Xbox network and allow cloud synchronization. If the title is a separate Series edition, verify that its documented save relationship includes the Xbox One version. Moving files from USB alone cannot satisfy that requirement.

Keep both consoles connected to a reliable network, fully quit the game on the old console and retry after signing in again. Avoid switching accounts while the sync is in progress. If the title remains unable to retrieve the save, preserve the old console and check Microsoft’s support guidance for that game and the current Xbox network status; there is no single universal repair for every title.
Verification checklist before you reset the old console
- The old console completed a normal save while connected to Xbox network.
- The account on Series X|S is exactly the account used for the original progress.
- The game is listed as supported for Series X|S, including the Xbox 360 backward-compatible list where applicable.
- The correct digital or disc-based edition is installed for the console you own.
- Any cloud-synchronization prompt was allowed to finish.
- You opened a recognizable checkpoint, profile, world or campaign on Series X|S.
- You have not relied on a USB copy or network transfer as proof that the save itself moved.
Once those checks pass, the old console can be reset or sold without being the only place your latest progress exists. If any check fails, leave the old console and its storage intact while you correct the account, compatibility or synchronization issue.
Quick Recap
Key points
- Xbox One saves normally follow the same account to Series X|S through Xbox cloud synchronization.
- Xbox 360 saves require both a supported backward-compatible title and a cloud copy of the save.
- Network transfer and USB drives move installations and apps; they do not replace cloud save synchronization.
- Series S cannot use Xbox One or Xbox 360 discs because it is digital-only.
- Verify the expected progress on Series X|S before wiping the old console.
