WhatsApp’s supported process requires the iPhone to be in setup; it does not merge Android chat history into chats already on an activated iPhone.
Before you start: check eligibility
WhatsApp’s Android-to-iPhone migration runs as part of iPhone setup. Confirm that the Android phone runs Android 5 or later and the iPhone runs iOS 15.5 or later. Install Move to iOS on Android and the latest WhatsApp version available for each phone; the current help pages do not specify fixed app-version numbers.

- The iPhone is new or has been factory reset and is still in its initial setup.
- You can register WhatsApp on the iPhone with the same phone number used on Android.
- Both phones are connected to power and the same Wi-Fi network. Apple’s transfer guidance also allows Android to connect to the iPhone’s hotspot.
- You have access to both phones throughout the transfer.

Transfer WhatsApp chats with Move to iOS
- Start iPhone setup. On the new or reset iPhone, proceed through setup until you reach the data-transfer stage.
- Open Move to iOS on Android. Follow the onscreen instructions and enter the code displayed on the iPhone when asked.
- Select WhatsApp. On the iPhone’s “Transfer Data” screen, choose WhatsApp.
- Prepare the chat export. Tap “Start” in WhatsApp on the Android phone and wait for preparation to finish. WhatsApp logs the Android session out after preparation is complete.
- Complete the device transfer. Return to Move to iOS and continue. Keep the phones connected until the iPhone confirms the transfer is complete.
- Import on the iPhone. Install the latest WhatsApp from the App Store, open it, verify the same phone number used on Android, and tap “Start” when prompted. Wait for the import to finish before checking your chats.
Do not browse for or select a WhatsApp folder in Move to iOS; WhatsApp says that file-browsing route is unsupported. It also warns that other chat-migration apps are unsupported and may cause chat loss. See WhatsApp’s transfer instructions.

What transfers—and what does not
WhatsApp says this move can transfer account information, profile photo, individual and group chats, communities, channel updates, chat history, media, and settings. These items do not transfer:
- WhatsApp call history
- Your display name
- Media received through WhatsApp Channels
- Peer-to-peer payment messages
WhatsApp Business chat migration is not supported by this flow. The transfer also does not make an iCloud backup. After confirming the chats on the iPhone, create an iCloud backup separately if you want the history stored there. WhatsApp says the data remains on the Android phone unless you erase the phone or delete WhatsApp.

If the iPhone is already set up
The supported migration must happen during setup, before WhatsApp is activated on the iPhone. If you have already completed iPhone setup, WhatsApp says you need to factory-reset the iPhone to use this transfer method. A reset erases the iPhone’s contents, so preserve any iPhone data you want to keep before proceeding. Android chats cannot be merged with newer chats already on the iPhone. If you plan to change your phone number
Use the same number on the iPhone that you use for WhatsApp on Android. If you are changing numbers, WhatsApp advises changing the number on the Android phone before starting the migration. Registering the new number on the iPhone first will not move the old chat history. The steps and eligibility details are in WhatsApp’s transfer guidance.

If the transfer stalls or fails
Keep the Android phone’s WhatsApp data intact until the iPhone import is complete and you have checked the transferred history. WhatsApp says the data remains on the old phone if the transfer fails, stalls, or produces an error.
- For some transfer errors, restart both phones and try again.
- If Move to iOS itself is having problems, Apple Support is the recommended contact.
- If WhatsApp reports that the history may be corrupted, its troubleshooting flow offers retry or skip-import choices.
- If QR scanning fails, raise the iPhone’s brightness, clean the Android camera, make sure you are scanning the correct QR code, and remove the iPhone screen protector if it obstructs the scan.
WhatsApp cautions: “Using any other apps to move chats isn’t supported and may cause loss of chats.” Read its transfer troubleshooting steps for the relevant error.
