The safest way to move a Rockstar save is to use Rockstar Games Launcher cloud synchronization when the game and purchase route support it. For anything unsupported, stale, or uncertain, close the game and launcher, copy the complete title save folder to a USB drive, external SSD, or network location, then place it in the matching folder on the new PC. Keep the original backup until the new computer loads the expected progress.
Choose the right transfer method first
Rockstar saves do not all behave the same way. Cloud synchronization depends on the game, edition, storefront, and launch path. Rockstar says that games purchased through the Rockstar Games Launcher, together with cloud saves and progress, can synchronize for supported games after you sign in on another PC. That automatic treatment should not be assumed for disc installations, unsupported titles, or games launched through Steam; Rockstar’s multi-PC guidance says those cases require setup on each computer and may need a title-specific manual backup.

A manual copy gives you a separate recovery point and works even when you do not trust the cloud copy. It is also the practical option when you are moving between editions, replacing a failed computer, or dealing with a save that has not synchronized recently.

Prepare both computers before touching a save
- Use the same Rockstar account. Cloud progress is associated with the account that created it. Sign out and back in if the launcher shows a different account.
- Match the game and edition. Install the same title and, where applicable, the same PC edition before replacing files. Treat a standard and an enhanced edition as separate save locations until Rockstar confirms compatibility.
- Finish the last save normally. On the old PC, return to the game menu or desktop through the normal exit path instead of shutting down while a save is being written.
- Close the game and Rockstar Games Launcher. A running process can rewrite or lock files while you are copying them.
- Make a dated backup. Copy the original folder to another location before replacing anything. Keep it until you have loaded the expected mission, chapter, or character progress on the new PC.
- Have enough temporary storage. Save folders are usually much smaller than a full game installation, so a basic USB flash drive is normally sufficient for the save folder itself. An external USB SSD is unnecessary unless you are also moving large game or media folders.
For a single-player transfer, the local save folder is the important item. GTA Online profile problems should be handled through the launcher recovery procedure described later rather than assuming that copying a local folder will repair an online profile.

Method A: transfer with Rockstar Launcher cloud saves
This is the least manual method, but only when the title and launch path support Rockstar’s cloud service. Rockstar’s multi-PC article was last updated May 20, 2024 and states that supported Launcher purchases can synchronize cloud saves and progress after you sign in on another PC.
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher on the old PC. Confirm the account name and email are the account used for the save.
- Enable cloud saves in the game’s launcher settings. Open the settings for the relevant game and make sure cloud saving is turned on. If it was disabled, turn it on while the old local save is still available.
- Launch the game and exit normally. Load or create the progress you want to keep, wait for any save indicator to finish, and quit through the game’s menu. Give the launcher time to upload before shutting down the old PC.
- Install the launcher and the same game on the new PC. Do not start a new game and overwrite a downloaded save while testing the installation.
- Sign in to the identical Rockstar account. Start the game and wait for synchronization to complete before creating, deleting, or replacing local saves.
- Inspect any conflict dialog instead of choosing automatically. Compare the displayed progress and timestamps. Keep the copy that contains the newest intended progress, and retain your local backup whenever the launcher offers a choice.
- Load the save and verify it. Check a recognizable mission, chapter, character, or completion point. Only after this check should you remove the old-PC backup.
A cloud copy can be stale if the old computer never finished uploading, if cloud saves were disabled, or if the new computer is signed in to another account. In those situations, stop using the new installation and use the manual method with the old folder still intact.
Method B: copy the save folder manually
Manual transfer is the dependable fallback for unsupported launch paths and the clearest way to preserve a rollback copy. The exact directory is title-specific. Rockstar’s documented Grand Theft Auto V example is:

The bracketed portion is your Windows user name. The Profiles directory normally contains a profile-ID folder and the save data beneath it. Preserve that folder hierarchy and profile-ID name; do not scatter individual files directly into GTAV.
1. Locate the source folder on the old PC
- Exit the game and Rockstar Games Launcher completely. Check the notification area and close the launcher if it remains running.
- Open File Explorer and go to the title-specific Rockstar save location. For GTAV, start with
C:Users[Username]DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAVProfiles. - If the folder is not there, determine which physical folder Windows is using for
Documents. A redirected or synchronized Documents location can placeRockstar Gamessomewhere other than the default path. Search the actual Documents location before creating a second, empty Rockstar Games folder. - Copy the entire relevant title folder, or at minimum the complete
Profilesfolder when the title’s instructions specify it. Do not edit, rename, or selectively delete save files unless Rockstar’s instructions for that title explicitly require it.
2. Move the folder to the new PC
You can use a USB flash drive, an external SSD, or a temporary network folder. Microsoft’s current Windows 10/11 external-storage workflow is to connect the drive, copy the source folder, verify the files on the drive, safely eject it, connect it to the new PC, and copy the folder to its destination. For a direct PC-to-PC transfer, Microsoft also documents using the same Wi-Fi or LAN and a pairing code.
- Create a clearly named transfer folder, such as
Rockstar-save-backup-2026-10-19, on the removable drive or network location. - Copy the source title folder into it rather than moving the only copy. Wait for the copy to finish.
- Open the copied folder on the transfer device and verify that the expected profile-ID folder and save files are present. Compare the folder size with the source when practical.
- Safely eject the removable drive from the old PC before unplugging it. This reduces the chance of an incomplete write being carried to the new computer.
3. Let the new installation create its folder structure
- Install the same game and Rockstar Games Launcher on the new PC, then sign in to the same Rockstar account.
- Launch the game once and exit. This creates the expected Documents and title folders for that installation.
- Close the game and launcher again before replacing any files.
- Open the newly created title folder and make a second backup, for example
GTAV-new-PC-before-replacement. This gives you a way back if the copied save is incompatible with the installed edition.
4. Replace the new folder without breaking the hierarchy
- Copy the old
Profilescontents into the matching newProfileslocation, or copy the complete title folder if the title’s instructions call for the whole folder. - When Windows asks whether to replace files, confirm only after checking that the destination is the newly created folder on the new PC.
- Ensure the profile-ID directory remains one level below
Profiles; a common mistake is creating an extra nested path such asProfilesProfilesprofile-ID. - Start the game and open its load menu. Load the expected save and verify a distinctive progress point.
- Keep both the old-PC backup and the pre-replacement new-PC backup until the save has worked through more than one normal launch.
How to find a missing or relocated save folder
The GTAV path is an example, not a universal Rockstar path. Other titles can use different title names, subfolders, or profile structures, and a different PC edition can write to a different location. Confirm the current Rockstar support instructions for the exact title before copying a path from another game.

Documents is redirected
Windows can redirect Documents to another drive or synchronized location. In File Explorer, use the properties of Documents or the location shown in the navigation pane to identify the real destination. Search that location for a Rockstar Games folder. Do not create a parallel folder under the default path until you know the game is actually using it.

The game has never been launched on the new PC
A fresh installation may not have created its save directory yet. Launch once, exit normally, and then inspect the generated structure. Copying files before that step makes it easier to paste into the wrong title or edition folder.
You are unsure which edition is installed
Check the title and edition shown in the launcher and in the installed game’s folder. Keep the source folder untouched while testing. If one edition does not recognize the save, restore the destination backup and do not repeatedly convert or overwrite the source files.

Rockstar Games Launcher purchases
Supported games purchased through Rockstar Games Launcher are the clearest candidates for cloud synchronization. You still need the same account, an enabled cloud-save setting, and a completed upload from the old PC.

Steam launches
Do not assume that starting a Rockstar title through Steam gives it the same automatic multi-PC treatment as a direct Launcher purchase. Rockstar’s guidance says Steam-launched games need setup again on each PC. Plan a manual, title-specific backup and use the cloud method only if the game’s current support instructions explicitly confirm it.

Disc installs and unsupported titles
Disc installations and unsupported games likewise should be treated as manual-transfer cases. Install the game and required launcher components on the new PC, launch once to create the directory, and then copy the verified save folder.
Standard versus enhanced PC editions
Different editions can have separate paths or incompatible save formats. Treat them as separate titles until Rockstar confirms that a save can move between them. Make a full backup before experimenting, and never use the only copy as a conversion test.

- Check the account first. Sign out of Rockstar Games Launcher and sign back in to the account used on the old PC.
- Check the cloud setting on the old PC. If cloud saves were off, enable them, launch the game, exit normally, and allow time for the upload.
- Do not overwrite the local copy. If the new PC offers a conflict choice, compare progress and timestamps and preserve both copies before selecting one.
- Use the manual backup if the cloud copy remains wrong. A verified folder from the old PC is safer than repeatedly launching and generating newer, empty saves on the new PC.
Repair GTA Online profile-data errors
Rockstar’s current GTA Online recovery sequence, documented in guidance last updated February 17, 2026, is different from copying a single-player save folder. Follow this exact order:
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and open Settings.
- Select the GTA game and enable cloud saves.
- Open Account information.
- Choose Delete local profile.
- Select Confirm, then sign in to Rockstar Games Launcher again.
- Relaunch the game and check the online profile.
Rockstar states that this removes profile details from the local device and requires another launcher sign-in; it does not delete the Rockstar account or saved games. Do not treat the command as a general-purpose way to erase or replace a single-player backup.

Recover from common transfer mistakes
The game starts with a new save
Exit without saving further progress. Recheck the title and edition, confirm that the folder is under the active Documents location, and verify the profile-ID level of the hierarchy. Restore the destination backup, then copy the old folder again with the game and launcher closed.
Only some saves appear
Copy the complete relevant folder rather than individual files. Missing files can mean that the wrong profile-ID folder was selected or that the old PC had more than one local profile. Compare the old and transferred folder contents before trying another replacement.
The copied folder is empty or smaller than expected
Check the copy on the USB drive or network location before disconnecting the old PC. If the removable drive was unplugged without safe ejection, repeat the copy from the untouched source. Keep the source computer available until the new PC has loaded the save.

A cloud copy and local copy disagree
Do not choose blindly. Keep both copies in separately named folders, compare the visible progress and timestamps, and test one copy at a time. Once you identify the intended version, archive the other instead of deleting it immediately.
The save worked once but disappears later
Check whether cloud synchronization is replacing the local file with an older version, and confirm that the game is writing to the folder you copied. Make another dated backup after a successful load, then test one normal exit and restart before removing older backups.
A safe verification and rollback routine
- Record the source folder’s location and the date of the last intended save.
- Keep the untouched source folder on the old PC or a separate drive.
- Keep the transfer-device copy and the new-PC pre-replacement folder under different names.
- After copying, launch the game and verify a distinctive mission, chapter, character level, or completion point rather than relying only on the presence of files.
- Exit normally, relaunch, and verify the same progress again.
- Only then archive or delete older copies. If the save fails, close the game, restore the pre-replacement destination backup, and retry from the untouched source.
The key distinction is simple: cloud synchronization is convenient when Rockstar supports the title and launch path, while a closed-launcher folder copy gives you an independently recoverable version. For either method, preserving the original until verification is what prevents a transfer mistake from becoming permanent.
