It requires both consoles, an internet connection on each, the same Nintendo Account linked to the relevant users, and current system software. Nintendo Switch Online is not required. The transfer moves the save and removes it from the original Switch, so check the destination before accepting any overwrite.
If the original console is unavailable, you can use Save Data Cloud only when you have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and that specific Resident Evil release supports cloud saves. Eligibility is title-specific and should be verified before you begin.

Choose the right transfer method first
There are two individual-save routes, and they are not interchangeable. Nearby-console transfer is usually the right choice when both systems are in front of you. Cloud download is useful when the old Switch is unavailable, but it adds two conditions: a Nintendo Switch Online membership and Save Data Cloud support for the exact game release.
| Question | Nearby-console transfer | Save Data Cloud download |
|---|---|---|
| Is the original Switch required? | Yes, both consoles must be available and near each other. | No, provided a usable cloud backup already exists. |
| Is Nintendo Switch Online required? | No. | Yes, an active membership is required. |
| Does the game need special support? | The software must be compatible with Nintendo’s save-transfer process. | The exact Resident Evil release must support Save Data Cloud. |
| What happens to existing data? | The source save is moved, not copied. A target save may be overwritten if you approve it. | The download replaces the target console’s local save for that game. |
| Can the replaced data be recovered? | Nintendo says overwritten save data cannot be recovered. | Nintendo says overwritten save data cannot be recovered. |
Choose based on whether you have the original console, whether the specific game supports cloud backup, whether you have an active membership, and whether you intend to replace any save already on Switch 2. Neither route combines two sets of progress. Nearby transfer moves the selected save off the source console; cloud download replaces the target’s local save with the backup.

- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Do not assume that every Resident Evil game sold for Switch has the same cloud policy. Verify the individual release in its Nintendo product information or in its Save Data Cloud menu. Nintendo’s guidance does not establish cloud eligibility for every Resident Evil title.
What you need before moving a save
- The original Nintendo Switch containing the Resident Evil save.
- The destination Nintendo Switch 2.
- Both consoles connected to the internet and kept near one another during a nearby transfer.
- The latest system software installed on both consoles.
- A user on each console linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- The Resident Evil software installed or otherwise available on Switch 2 so you can check the transferred save afterward.
Save data is associated with a user, not simply with the physical game card. Select the user profile that actually created the save. If two people use separate profiles, signing in with the wrong profile can make the expected save appear to be missing even when the transfer itself worked.
No Nintendo Switch Online membership or special accessory is required for the nearby-console procedure. Internet access is still required on both systems, even though the save is selected from the consoles themselves. A membership is relevant only if you choose cloud backup, and even then it is not enough on its own: the exact game must support Save Data Cloud and a usable backup must be available.
How to transfer a Resident Evil save when both consoles are available
1. Prepare both consoles
- Connect the original Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 to the internet.
- Install the latest available system software on each console.
- Keep the systems near one another so the transfer can proceed without losing the local connection.
- Confirm that the relevant user on each console is linked to the same Nintendo Account.
Make sure you know which save and user you intend to move before starting. This process is for moving an individual save, not for keeping an extra copy on the original console. If Switch 2 already has progress for the same software, consider which version you want to keep before proceeding.
2. Start sending the save on the original Switch
- Open System Settings on the original Nintendo Switch.
- Choose Data Management.
- Select Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Select the user who owns the Resident Evil save.
- Select the Resident Evil save file, then continue through the confirmation screens.
The title may be shown by its full software name rather than simply “Resident Evil.” Check the icon and user carefully before proceeding, especially if multiple versions or more than one Resident Evil game are installed.
3. Receive the save on Switch 2
- On Switch 2, open System Settings.
- Go to Data Management.
- Select Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Receive Save Data.
- Follow the prompts until Switch 2 detects the save being sent by the original console.
If Switch 2 already contains a save for that software, Nintendo may display an overwrite choice. Stop and verify the situation before selecting it. Accepting the overwrite replaces the target’s current save, and Nintendo says overwritten save data cannot be recovered. Do not approve the prompt simply to see what happens; choose it only if the incoming save is the one you want to keep on Switch 2.
4. Verify the result in the game
- Wait for both consoles to report that the transfer has finished.
- Launch the Resident Evil game on Switch 2 using the same user profile.
- Open the game’s load or continue menu and check for the expected progress, chapter, inventory, or other save details.
Nearby transfer is a move operation. Nintendo does not leave a duplicate of that save on the original Switch. Do not erase or reset either console until you have opened the game on Switch 2 and confirmed that the correct progress is present.

What to do when the old Switch is unavailable
Use Save Data Cloud only if the save was backed up and the exact Resident Evil release supports the service. Nintendo Switch Online is required for this route. A membership by itself does not make every game cloud-compatible.
Check cloud eligibility before downloading
Look at the individual game’s Nintendo product information or open its Save Data Cloud menu. The relevant question is whether that particular Resident Evil release supports Save Data Cloud, not whether another game in the series does. If the title does not offer the feature, a cloud download is not available through Nintendo’s documented process.
Also distinguish eligibility from having a backup to restore. The cloud route requires a usable save backup; it cannot fetch a save that was never stored in the service. If you cannot confirm both support and an existing backup, do not count on cloud download as a way to recover progress from a missing console.
Download from the game icon
- Highlight the Resident Evil game icon on the Switch 2 HOME Menu.
- Open the software menu.
- Choose Save Data Cloud.
- Select the appropriate user.
- Choose Download Save Data.
- Confirm only after checking that the cloud version is the one you want to restore.
Download through System Settings
- Open System Settings on Switch 2.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user.
- Choose the Resident Evil game.
- Select Download Save Data and confirm.
The cloud download replaces the game’s existing local save on Switch 2. If the target has newer progress than the backup, that newer local progress will be replaced, and Nintendo says overwritten data cannot be recovered. Compare the backup date or other displayed details with your expectations before confirming. This is a restore, not a merge between the backup and the destination save.
How the same-account requirement affects the transfer
Nintendo’s nearby transfer requires the relevant user on both consoles to be linked to the same Nintendo Account. This does not mean every user on either console must use that account; it means the user whose save you are moving must correspond to the same Nintendo Account on the destination system.

If the receiving profile is linked to a different account, the expected user or save may not be offered. Check the account association before troubleshooting the game itself. Do not create a new profile as a substitute unless you understand that it will not be the same user identity as the profile that created the original save.
Nearby transfer versus a full system transfer
Nintendo also provides a broader System Transfer from Switch to Switch 2. That is a different operation from moving one Resident Evil save. A full transfer is designed to move wider console information and is performed during initial setup of the destination system.
Nintendo describes a local system-transfer route when both consoles are present and a server-upload route for circumstances in which the source console will not be available. The server route initializes the source console, while local transfer also removes source data after completion. Those consequences make a full system transfer a poor default for someone who only wants one game’s progress.

Compatibility limits to keep in mind
Switch 2 plays compatible Nintendo Switch software, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be supported or may not be fully compatible. Save movement and game compatibility are separate checks: a save can transfer successfully, yet the associated software still needs to run correctly on Switch 2.
Because “Resident Evil on Switch” covers multiple releases, identify the exact title and edition before relying on cloud features or assuming identical behavior. Nintendo’s product information or the game’s Save Data Cloud menu is the place to check eligibility. If the cloud menu is absent for your game, use nearby transfer when possible rather than treating the absence as a temporary error.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The transfer option is missing
Confirm that you are in System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data on each console, that both systems are updated, and that both are connected to the internet. Nearby transfer is separate from Save Data Cloud, so having or lacking Nintendo Switch Online does not add the nearby menu.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Resident Evil save does not appear in the list
Check that you selected the user profile that owns the save and that you are using the exact software installed on the source console. A different profile can have no save, even if the game is present. If the game is not compatible with the transfer process, Nintendo’s menu may not offer it.
Switch 2 asks to overwrite an existing save
Cancel unless you have deliberately chosen the incoming save over the one already on Switch 2. Compare which profile and version you are using. Nintendo states that overwritten save data cannot be recovered, so do not approve the prompt as a test.
The cloud option is unavailable
Check for an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and confirm Save Data Cloud support for the exact Resident Evil release. Cloud compatibility is determined per game. If the title is unsupported, the absence of the option is expected rather than a sign that your account is damaged.
The old console is gone and no cloud backup exists
Neither the nearby transfer nor a new cloud download can retrieve a save that is unavailable on the source and was never stored in a compatible cloud backup. A Nintendo Switch Online membership cannot create a historical backup after the original console is gone.
The game opens but the progress looks wrong
Exit without creating additional saves, then verify the user profile, the Resident Evil release, and whether you downloaded or transferred the intended version. If you accepted an overwrite, Nintendo’s guidance says the replaced data cannot be recovered through that process.

A safe pre-transfer checklist
- Both consoles are connected to the internet.
- Both consoles run current system software.
- The systems are close together for a nearby transfer.
- The source and destination users are linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- You identified the exact Resident Evil release.
- You know whether Switch 2 already has a save for that game.
- You are prepared for the source save to be removed by nearby transfer.
- You will not approve an overwrite unless it is intentional.
- For cloud transfer, you confirmed Nintendo Switch Online and title-specific Save Data Cloud support.
Which method should you use?
Use nearby-console transfer when the original Switch is available and you want to move one save without paying for or relying on Nintendo Switch Online. It is the most direct path, but it removes the save from the source and requires care if Switch 2 already contains progress.
Use Save Data Cloud when the original console is unavailable or when a cloud backup is your chosen source, but only after confirming membership and compatibility for the exact Resident Evil release. Treat the download as a replacement operation, not a merge: it writes the backup over the target’s local save.
Reserve full System Transfer for a deliberate migration of broader console data. It is not necessary merely to carry one Resident Evil save to Switch 2.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to transfer a Resident Evil save directly from Switch to Switch 2?
No. Nintendo’s nearby Transfer Your Save Data feature does not require Nintendo Switch Online. You need both consoles, internet access on each, and the same Nintendo Account linked to the users involved. A membership is required for the separate Save Data Cloud route.
Does Resident Evil support Save Data Cloud on Switch?
Cloud eligibility depends on the specific Resident Evil release. Check that game’s Nintendo product information or its Save Data Cloud menu; do not assume that support for one entry in the series applies to another. Cloud download also requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and an existing usable backup.
Does transferring the save leave a copy on my old Switch?
No. Nearby-console transfer moves the selected save and removes it from the source console. Open the game on Switch 2 and confirm the expected progress before resetting or otherwise erasing either system.
Will a cloud download combine my Switch 2 save with the backup?
No. Downloading Save Data Cloud data replaces the target console’s local save for that game. Check that the backup is the version you want before confirming; Nintendo says overwritten save data cannot be recovered.

Can I transfer a save if the original Switch is gone and I did not have a cloud backup?
The nearby transfer requires the source console, and cloud download needs a compatible existing backup. A membership cannot create a backup for a save that was not stored before the original console became unavailable.
Should I use a full System Transfer to move just one Resident Evil save?
Usually not. Use the individual Transfer Your Save Data feature for one save. System Transfer moves broader console information during Switch 2 setup; its server route initializes the source, and local transfer removes source data after completion.
What if the save transfers but Resident Evil does not work correctly on Switch 2?
Save movement and game compatibility are separate. Switch 2 supports compatible Switch software, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Confirm the exact game release and check the save in the correct user profile.
The Bottom Line
For one Resident Evil save, use System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data on both nearby consoles. It requires internet access and matching Nintendo Accounts, but not Nintendo Switch Online—and it moves the save off the original Switch. If the old console is unavailable, cloud restoration works only for an eligible release with an existing backup and active membership, and the download replaces any local save on Switch 2.
