A Ray-Ban Meta owner says audio recordings and transcripts appeared in the Meta AI app’s conversation history even though the “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” option was off. The Reddit post describes three pairs of glasses, but the allegation has not been independently verified. It does not establish whether other owners are affected or whether the audio was sent to Meta.
What the owner says happened
In a Reddit post dated October 13, 2026, the owner says the Meta AI app saved audio recordings and text transcripts of conversations without deliberate activation. The poster says the behavior began after a recent firmware update and appeared on three pairs, including second- and third-generation glasses. Those details are the poster’s account, not confirmed findings or evidence of a wider defect. The owner also says they cannot determine whether the issue affects all owners or whether the recordings were transmitted to Meta. Read the Reddit post.

What the “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” setting does
Ray-Ban’s current US FAQ describes a short microphone follow-up window after a voice request when “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” is enabled. The setting is on by default, according to the FAQ. The microphone stays active briefly so the wearer can make another request without repeating the wake phrase; it turns off automatically after a few seconds without a further request.

Ray-Ban says the notification LED indicates when audio is being processed during this follow-up window. Its FAQ also states: “To protect your privacy, if we detect speech not intended for your glasses, your glasses will not react.” That is the maker’s description of intended behavior, not an independent assessment of every device or software version. It does not explain the owner’s claim that audio entries appeared while the option was off. See Ray-Ban’s US FAQ.

How to check the setting
- Open the Meta AI app and go to the Meta AI settings, or open the preferences for the glasses you have selected.
- Open the glasses’ “Hey Meta” preferences and check “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’.”
- If you do not want the post-request follow-up window, switch the option off.
Menu wording and placement may vary with app version. The FAQ also provides microphone troubleshooting for voice controls that do not respond consistently, but those steps do not confirm or resolve the reported recording allegation.
Do not confuse the camera light with evidence about audio
Meta’s July 2026 privacy explainer describes the white capture LED as a signal that photos or videos are being captured for the glasses’ gallery. It says those gallery captures are stored privately on the glasses unless the wearer chooses to share them. That description concerns camera media; it does not establish how audio history is handled, whether the reported entries were uploaded, or whether a microphone was recording in the alleged circumstances. What is established—and what is not
- Established: Ray-Ban documents a brief microphone follow-up mode when the setting is enabled, says it ends after a few seconds without another request, and describes an LED indication while audio is processed.
- Alleged, not verified: One owner says recordings and transcripts appeared in app history with the setting off, across three pairs after a firmware update.
- Not established: The reviewed sources do not show how often unintended recording occurs, that this is a widespread fault, or that the alleged audio was transmitted to Meta.
A September 2026 podcast discussion raised broader privacy questions about voice-recording defaults and Meta’s position on shared content and contractor review. That is background context, not independent confirmation of this owner’s specific account. Listen to the Atlantic podcast discussion.

What affected owners can do
- Check whether “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” is enabled and turn it off if you do not want the follow-up listening window.
- Preserve relevant conversation-history entries and note the glasses’ generation, software version, app version, and when the entries appeared.
- Report the behavior through official support channels and include those details. A report may help support investigate, but it cannot by itself establish the cause or whether audio was transmitted.
