The safest way to move a PS4 library to a PS5 is Sony’s built-in Data Transfer tool. Sign in to the same PlayStation account on both consoles, update their system software, synchronize trophies, place both systems on the same network, and start Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer on the PS5. You can also download digital games again, install disc games, reuse a PS4 USB extended-storage drive, or move saves through PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a USB drive.
The important limitation is game-specific save compatibility: a PS4 save usually works with the PS4 version running on PS5, but importing that save into a native PS5 version depends on the game’s developer.

What the PS5 can transfer from a PS4
Sony’s transfer matrix separates migration into three categories. During the PS5’s initial setup, the consoles can transfer user and account information, saved data for games that are playable on PS5, and games that are playable on PS5. If the PS5 setup has already been completed, saved-data transfer is limited to the user signed in on the destination PS5.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Data | Initial PS5 setup | After setup | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| User and account information | Can transfer | Not part of the normal post-setup transfer | Use the same PlayStation account on both consoles. |
| PS4 saved data | Can transfer for games playable on PS5 | Can transfer for the user signed in on the PS5 | Existing data already on the PS5 is not transferred or merged. |
| PS4 games playable on PS5 | Can transfer | Use downloads, discs, or USB extended storage as alternatives | Only compatible titles are usable on PS5. |
Data already present on the PS5 is not copied back to the PS4 or combined through the transfer process. If the destination console already contains a newer save, make a backup and check timestamps before choosing which version to keep.

Before you start: requirements and preparation
Use the same PlayStation account
Sign in to the same PlayStation Network account on both consoles. This is essential for account-linked purchases and for identifying the user whose saves are being moved. If several people use the PS4, repeat the appropriate save-transfer method for each account; a post-setup network transfer only covers the user signed in on the destination PS5.
Update both consoles
Install the latest available system software on the PS4 and PS5 before opening Data Transfer. An outdated console can prevent the transfer screen from appearing or interrupt the process.
Synchronize trophies manually
Open the trophy section on the PS4 and synchronize it with PlayStation Network before transferring. Trophy records are tied to the account rather than copied as ordinary save files, so a manual sync ensures recent achievements are recorded online.
Put both consoles on one network
Connect the PS4 and PS5 to the same modem or router, either over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Sony says a LAN cable can make the transfer faster than Wi-Fi; the cable is sold separately. A wired connection is especially useful when moving a large installed library.
- Keep both consoles connected to power for the entire operation.
- Do not change either console’s network settings while the transfer is running.
- Do not run an internet-connection test during the transfer.
- Do not switch either console off, even if the PS5 restarts.
Sony warns that powering down, changing network settings, or running a connection test can damage or lose data.

Method 1: direct PS4-to-PS5 network transfer
This is the only method that can move account information, compatible games, and saves in one guided process. It requires the PS4 to remain available until the migration is complete.
During the PS5’s first setup
- Turn on the PS5 and begin initial setup.
- When the data-transfer screen appears, keep the PS4 powered on and connected to the same network.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to identify the PS4 and select the users, saves, and compatible games to transfer.
- Confirm the transfer and leave both consoles alone until the PS5 reports completion.
After PS5 setup is complete
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue.
- When prompted, keep the PS4 turned on and connected to the same modem or router.
- Choose the available user and the compatible games or saved data you want to move.
- Accept the warning and start the transfer.
The PS5 restarts during this process. Some game data can continue transferring after the restart, so do not assume that the reboot means the operation has failed. Leave both consoles powered on until the transfer notification confirms that it has finished.
What to expect from transfer time
Transfer duration depends on the amount of installed game data, the connection between the consoles, and whether you use Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A LAN connection generally provides a faster and more stable path than Wi-Fi, but it does not change the compatibility of a game or its saves.
Separate ways to move or reinstall PS4 games
Digital games: download from Game Library
For digitally purchased games, sign in to the purchasing account on the PS5, open Game Library, select the game, and choose Download. This avoids copying the installation over the local network, although the PS5 must download the files again. Your license remains attached to the account; downloading does not require the PS4 to stay switched on.
Disc games: insert the PS4 disc
Insert the PS4 game disc into a PS5 model with a disc drive and install the game. Keep the disc available whenever the game requires a license check. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read a PS4 disc.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
USB extended storage: reuse the PS4 game drive
If the PS4 used a USB drive formatted as extended storage, safely disconnect it from the PS4 and connect it to the PS5. Compatible installed PS4 games can then be accessed from that drive, avoiding a full redownload or network copy.
Sony’s supported capacity range for a PS5-compatible USB extended-storage drive is 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum. The drive must meet the PS5’s USB and formatting requirements; a drive outside that range cannot be used as supported extended storage. PS4 games can be played directly from the USB extended-storage drive, while native PS5 games need to be stored on the PS5’s internal storage or compatible expansion storage.
Ways to move PS4 saved data without a full console transfer
PlayStation Plus cloud saves
- On the PS4, upload the game’s saved data to online storage through the saved-data management options.
- On the PS5, sign in to the same PlayStation Plus account.
- Open the cloud-storage saved-data controls and download the required PS4 saves to the PS5.
- Start the game and verify the save before deleting anything from the PS4.
Sony lists up to 100 GB of PS4 saved-data cloud storage for PlayStation Plus. This method needs an active PlayStation Plus entitlement with cloud storage and does not move game installations; download or install the game separately.
USB export for PS4 saves
- Connect a USB drive to the PS4.
- Open the PS4 saved-data management menu and choose the option to copy saved data to a USB storage device.
- Select the game and saves, then let the copy finish before removing the drive.
- Connect that USB drive to the PS5.
- Open the PS5 saved-data management controls and copy the PS4 saved data from USB storage to the console.
This route is useful when the PS4 and PS5 cannot be online at the same time or when you do not subscribe to PlayStation Plus. It is specifically a PS4-save workflow: Sony does not allow PS5 saved data to be copied from a PS5 to USB storage.
Will a PS4 save work with the PS5 version?
There are two different situations. A PS4 game running through PS5 backward compatibility normally uses its PS4 save format. A separate native PS5 build may use a different format or an account-based conversion process.

Sony states that “The ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.” Therefore, transferring a PS4 save to the console does not guarantee that the native PS5 edition will recognize it.
Check before deleting the PS4 version
- Look for the game publisher’s instructions on cross-generation save migration.
- Check whether the game offers an in-game upload, download, or account-linking option.
- Keep the PS4 installation and its save until the native PS5 version has successfully imported your progress.
- Test the imported save by loading it and verifying the latest checkpoint, inventory, and settings.
Do not erase the PS4 save merely because the game has installed on PS5. The PS4 build may remain the only way to access that progress if the developer did not provide a conversion path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.PS4 game compatibility on PS5
Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. A small number of PS4-only games and functions are exceptions, so check the individual title’s compatibility listing rather than assuming every disc or download will work.
Backward compatibility and native-upgrade support are separate questions:
| Question | What it determines |
|---|---|
| Is the PS4 game playable on PS5? | Whether the PS4 build can install and run through backward compatibility. |
| Is there a native PS5 version? | Whether you can install a PS5 build with PS5-specific features or performance. |
| Does the save convert? | Whether the developer supports importing progress from the PS4 build into the PS5 build. |
| Is a disc upgrade available? | Whether the publisher offers a PS5 upgrade for an eligible PS4 disc and region. |
Disc-based PS5 upgrades
For eligible disc upgrades, the PS5 must have an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive. Sony’s wording is explicit: “If players originally purchased a PS4 game disc, the PS5 console with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive is required to upgrade to the PS5 version of the game and transfer their saves over.” A disc-based entitlement cannot be verified by a PS5 Digital Edition, even if the game itself has a native PS5 release.

Choosing the right transfer method
| Method | Must the PS4 remain available? | PlayStation Plus required? | Moves games | Moves saves | Network and storage considerations | Native PS5 save conversion |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Data Transfer | Yes, until it finishes | No | Yes, compatible PS4 games | Yes, within the user limits described above | Same modem/router; Ethernet can be faster than Wi-Fi | Not guaranteed; developer decides |
| Game Library download | No | No, unless the game is being accessed through a subscription rather than a purchase | Digital games only | No | Requires an internet download and PS5 storage | Not applicable to the download itself |
| PS4 disc installation | No | No | Disc games | No | Requires a PS5 with a disc drive | Not applicable to installation |
| USB extended storage | No after the drive is safely disconnected | No | Compatible PS4 game installations | No | Supported capacity is 250 GB–8 TB | Not applicable to game storage |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | No | Yes | No | Yes, PS4 saves | Up to 100 GB of PS4 saved-data cloud storage | Still depends on the game developer |
| USB PS4-save export | No, after copying | No | No | Yes, PS4 saves | Requires a compatible USB drive | Still depends on the game developer |
Use direct transfer when you want account information, saves, and a broad set of compatible games moved together. Use downloads or a USB extended-storage drive when the priority is restoring a large game library without waiting for a console-to-console copy. Use cloud or USB export when you need only selected saves.
Troubleshooting transfer problems
The PS5 cannot find the PS4
- Confirm that both consoles are signed in where required and connected to the same modem or router.
- Install pending system-software updates on both machines.
- Restart both consoles, reconnect them to the same network, and reopen Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue.
- If Wi-Fi discovery remains unreliable, connect both consoles by Ethernet.
The transfer stopped or the PS5 restarted
A PS5 restart is part of the expected process, and some game data may continue afterward. If the progress screen reports an error, restart the consoles and begin again without changing network settings or running a connection test. Keep the consoles powered throughout the retry.
A game is missing after migration
Check the PS5 Game Library for a digital purchase, insert the original disc for a disc license, or reconnect the PS4’s USB extended-storage drive. A title that is not supported on PS5 will not become playable through another transfer method.
Recommended Free Tools
The save appears on PS5 but not in the native PS5 edition
Launch the PS4 version of the game on PS5 first. If the save loads there, the transfer succeeded and the remaining issue is cross-generation conversion. Follow the publisher’s instructions for an in-game import or cloud link; if none exists, continue using the PS4 build and retain its save.
The PS5 reports insufficient space
Transfer saves first, then install games selectively. Move compatible PS4 installations to a supported USB extended-storage drive, or delete and later redownload digital games from Game Library. Do not delete a save until you have opened the game and confirmed the replacement copy.
Quick Recap
Safe post-transfer checklist
- Open each important game and verify the most recent save, not merely the presence of a game icon.
- For titles with both editions, test the PS4 build and the native PS5 build separately.
- Confirm that trophies synchronized from the PS4 account.
- Check that digital purchases appear in the correct account’s Game Library.
- Keep the original PS4 saves, discs, and USB drive untouched until every required title has been verified.
- Only then remove old installations or reset the PS4.
