How to Transfer ProRes RAW Footage from iPhone to a Mac or PC

Use Image Capture for a wired Mac transfer or a compatible Windows app for PC. Confirm the clip is ProRes RAW, choose a route that preserves the original, and plan for very large files.

For a direct cable copy, connect your iPhone to a Mac and import the clip with Image Capture; on Windows, use an application that supports the file. AirDrop, iCloud Photos and exporting to an external drive are alternatives. First confirm the clip is actually ProRes RAW: standard ProRes recorded in the built-in Camera app is a different format, and copying a file does not guarantee the destination app can play or edit it.

Check that the video is ProRes RAW

Apple distinguishes standard ProRes from ProRes RAW. The built-in Camera app’s ProRes option records standard ProRes; ProRes RAW is recorded through Final Cut Camera or some third-party apps. Apple’s Final Cut Camera guide says ProRes RAW recording requires iPhone 17 Pro or later and an external storage device. An older iPhone that supports standard ProRes does not therefore qualify as a ProRes RAW recording device.

Check the recording app and the clip’s codec or media information before choosing a workflow. Apple’s iPhone User Guide describes the supported recording capability this way: “On iPhone 17 Pro models and iPhone 18 Pro models, you can record videos in ProRes RAW using applications such as Final Cut Camera to maximize the amount of detail and information captured by the camera system.” This describes recording, not transfer. Apple iPhone User Guide: Record ProRes video with your iPhone camera.

Transfer by cable to a Mac

  1. Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a suitable USB-C or Lightning cable.
  2. Open Image Capture on the Mac and select the connected iPhone as the source.
  3. Choose a destination folder, select the video files, and import them.
  4. Check that the copied files are present and usable before deleting them from the iPhone or external recording drive.

Apple identifies Image Capture as a Mac transfer route for ProRes files. Apple Support: Use Apple ProRes on iPhone.

Transfer by cable to a Windows PC

  1. Connect the iPhone to the PC with a suitable cable and unlock the phone if prompted.
  2. Import the video using an application compatible with the iPhone’s media and the file type. Apple’s transfer guidance does not name one universal Windows importer.
  3. If you need to play ProRes RAW or ProRes RAW HQ, install Apple ProRes RAW for Windows and open the file in a compatible application.
  4. Test the actual file in the playback or editing application you intend to use before relying on it in a project.

Apple ProRes RAW for Windows version 1.3 specifies Windows 10 64-bit and enables playback in compatible applications. Apple lists Adobe After Effects, Adobe Media Encoder, Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Premiere Rush for that component. This is a playback-compatibility statement, not a guarantee that every version of those apps supports every import, editing or export workflow. Check the support for your specific app and version. Apple Support: About Apple ProRes RAW for Windows.

Choose another transfer route

Route Best for Important caveat
USB cable to Mac with Image Capture A direct computer copy without cloud syncing Check destination space and confirm the files copied successfully.
USB cable to Windows with a compatible app A direct PC workflow Apple does not specify a universal importer; importing and RAW playback are separate compatibility checks.
AirDrop Sending to a supported Apple device without a cable Enable All Photos Data and verify recipient support to preserve original ProRes.
iCloud Photos Accessing a photo library across devices With Optimize Storage, an original may remain in iCloud rather than being stored locally.
Export to external storage Offloading or carrying source files without first importing to a computer Export Unmodified Original does not bake edits into the exported copy.

AirDrop the original to a supported Apple device

  1. In Photos, select the ProRes clip and open Share, then Options.
  2. Turn on All Photos Data and tap Done.
  3. Choose AirDrop and select the recipient.

Apple says AirDrop can transfer the original ProRes video to supported iPhone, Mac and iPad models. For other receiving devices, the shared video may be HEVC or H.264 instead. A completed transfer alone does not prove the recipient received a ProRes original. Apple Support: Use Apple ProRes on iPhone.

Use iCloud Photos for access across devices

Apple identifies iCloud Photos as a way to access original full-resolution ProRes video across devices. On a Mac, open Photos settings and select Download Originals to this Mac to keep full-size originals locally. With Optimize Storage enabled, space-saving versions may be kept on the device while originals remain in iCloud. Downloading originals takes sufficient Mac storage and time for the library to sync. Apple Support: Set up and use iCloud Photos.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Export unmodified originals to an external drive

  1. Connect the external drive or other storage device to the iPhone.
  2. In Photos, select the videos, tap Share, and choose Export Unmodified Original.
  3. Choose the drive under Locations and tap Save.

This exports the unmodified original. If a video has edits, those edits are not baked into that exported file; use a rendered or shared version when you need a finished edit rather than source media. Apple iPhone User Guide: Import and export photos and videos.

Plan for large files and compatible storage

  • Apple says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files, and at least 10% of device storage must be free to record ProRes. These are general ProRes figures, not a fixed size estimate for every RAW clip. Apple Support: Use Apple ProRes on iPhone.
  • For ProRes RAW at 30 fps, Apple says one minute may use more than 10 GB; ProRes RAW HQ at 30 fps may use more than 15 GB. Actual size varies with recording configuration. Apple Final Cut Camera User Guide: Record ProRes RAW.
  • For external ProRes recording, Apple’s general guidance specifies exFAT, says password-encrypted drives are unsupported, and recommends a USB 3 cable rated at least 10 Gbit/s. Its minimum drive write speeds of 220 MB/s for 4K60 ProRes and 440 MB/s for 4K120 ProRes apply to recording those modes—not to transferring files to a computer. Follow the requirements for the exact device, app and recording setting. Apple Support: Use Apple ProRes on iPhone.
  • Final Cut Camera’s external-storage setup requires iPhone 15 Pro or later and a USB-C cable rated USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbit/s) or better for ProRes RAW or ProRes 4K at 120 fps. ProRes RAW recording itself requires iPhone 17 Pro or later plus external storage; these are distinct requirements. Apple Final Cut Camera User Guide: Record ProRes RAW.

Troubleshoot a missing, converted or unplayable file

  • The clip is not RAW: confirm the codec and recording app. The built-in Camera app’s ProRes option is standard ProRes; Apple says ProRes RAW uses Final Cut Camera or some third-party apps.
  • The iPhone does not appear or the file is unavailable: reconnect the phone, unlock it if prompted, and check the cable and import application. Apple documents the cable and application route but does not prescribe one fix for every connection problem.
  • Windows cannot preview the clip: check the chosen app’s ProRes RAW support and install Apple’s Windows playback component if needed. Its published version 1.3 specification is Windows 10 64-bit; compatibility in a particular application remains version-specific.
  • The AirDrop result is smaller or uses another codec: check All Photos Data and whether the recipient is among the supported devices for original ProRes transfer.
  • The copy or export fails for lack of space: check free capacity at both ends. Apple’s RAW examples can exceed 10 GB per minute, but there is no single file-size figure for every clip.
  • The exported video does not include edits: Export Unmodified Original exports the source. Export a rendered or shared version separately if you need a finished edit.
