Before accepting an engineering job offer, confirm the written terms, understand the work you will actually do, and assess whether the compensation, team, and working arrangements fit your priorities. Ask for unclear terms in writing, compare the full package rather than salary alone, and request time to review before deciding.
What to verify in the written offer
Start with the document, not an informal summary. Confirm the role and terms you are being asked to accept, and request the benefits information if it is missing. UC Berkeley recommends defining job duties, bonuses, benefits, location, and schedule clearly in writing; Harvard likewise advises getting compensation details in writing.
- Job title, duties, and employment location
- Base salary, pay frequency, and any bonus or equity terms
- Benefits, leave, retirement contribution, and eligibility dates
- Start date, reporting contact, and expected schedule
- Offer deadline and any contingencies or conditions
Ask: “Could you send the complete offer and benefits information in writing?” If a material term is described verbally, ask where it will appear in the final documents.
How to compare the full compensation package
Salary is only one part of compensation. Compare guaranteed pay and benefits with variable or conditional rewards, and understand how each is calculated. Harvard frames the evaluation as money, benefits, and opportunity, including base salary, bonuses, equity, retirement, tuition support, benefits, leave, and review timing.

| Offer element | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Base pay | Is this the annual base salary, and how often is it paid? |
| Bonus | Is any amount guaranteed? For a performance bonus, what measures determine the payout? |
| Equity or profit sharing | What is offered, when are you eligible, and what vesting or payout terms apply? |
| Retirement | What plan is available, and what employer contribution or match applies? |
| Benefits and leave | What coverage, employee costs, leave, and eligibility dates apply? |
| Other support | Is relocation or continuing education supported? Is home-office equipment or support included? |
Ask when the first compensation review occurs and whether reviews or raises depend on performance, cost of living, or another process. Harvard’s HES guidance recommends clarifying how a performance bonus is measured and how compensation reviews are determined.
Questions about the engineering work itself
A job title does not explain how your time will be spent. Ask for concrete examples of the work, ownership, and expectations; engineering-specific practices such as on-call coverage vary, so do not assume an industry-wide norm.

- Production responsibility: Is there an on-call rotation or incident response duty? How often does it occur, what backup is available, and how is the time handled or compensated?
- Schedule: What are the expected hours, release windows, travel, or after-hours commitments?
- Tools and learning: What equipment and development environment are provided, and is there a learning budget?
- Performance and growth: How are reviews conducted, what evidence is used, and how are raises and promotions decided?
Berkeley and Harvard career guidance recommends weighing duties, challenging projects, autonomy, learning, and future career paths. Ask what realistic next steps have looked like for people in comparable roles rather than relying on a title alone.
Assess the manager, team, and work arrangement
Your day-to-day experience depends on more than technical tasks. Find out who you report to, how feedback works, and how the team makes decisions. Useful questions include: “How often will we meet?”, “How does the team handle technical disagreement?”, and “What is the outlook for this team’s work?”

Clarify whether the role is remote, hybrid, or office-based in practice. For a hybrid role, ask how often you are expected on site and whether that cadence can change. Confirm time-zone overlap, travel, schedule, and home-office support; ask that important location or schedule terms be reflected in writing. These factors can affect both practical costs and personal fit.
How to compare multiple offers
Use the same criteria for each offer instead of comparing headline salaries. First rank your must-haves, preferences, and bonuses, then assess each offer against those priorities. Berkeley recommends listing criteria, ranking their importance, and checking how well each offer satisfies them.

| Comparison area | What to record for each offer |
|---|---|
| Compensation certainty | Base pay, guaranteed bonus, target bonus formula, equity, retirement contribution, eligibility, and vesting terms |
| Benefits and costs | Health-plan coverage and cost, leave, commute or relocation, equipment, and education support |
| Work | Scope, autonomy, technical challenge, ownership, support or on-call expectations, and success measures |
| People and growth | Manager and team, feedback, learning, promotion process, and the team’s outlook |
| Life fit | Location, schedule, flexibility, travel, and expected hours |
| Risk and clarity | Written terms, contingencies, conditions, and which compensation elements remain discretionary |
This makes trade-offs visible: a higher headline figure may come with less certain variable compensation, different costs, or work conditions that matter more to you.

Ask for the response deadline and the complete written package before deciding. Harvard recommends thanking the employer, requesting time, and asking for full compensation details in writing. Its guidance describes one week as typical, but that is a recommendation—not a guaranteed extension or universal deadline. Berkeley notes that some employers may extend a deadline and others may not.

- Thank the employer and ask when they need your answer.
- Request the full written offer and benefits details if you do not already have them.
- Ask for a reasonable period to review the terms; confirm whether the deadline can move.
- Research a realistic compensation range for the specific role, level, sector, and location, and decide which terms matter most to you.
- Raise a specific request respectfully and support it with relevant evidence. You can ask about base pay, a signing bonus, relocation, equity, start date, or another priority, but flexibility varies by employer and sector. Do not bluff about competing offers.
- If you reach agreement on changes, request a revised written offer before accepting.
Harvard recommends establishing both a realistic range and a personal baseline before negotiating. Some structured compensation settings may leave less room to change pay, so consider whether another term would better address your priorities.
Legal and jurisdiction-specific questions
Hiring rules depend on location and circumstances. For a narrow U.S. federal point, the EEOC’s ADA technical assistance manual says employers may not make pre-employment inquiries about a disability or its nature or severity, while questions about ability to perform specific job functions may be asked if they are not phrased in terms of disability. The manual also discusses post-offer inquiries or medical examinations where all entering employees in the same job category are treated alike. This is not a complete legal checklist; for questions about a contract, immigration, or rules in your jurisdiction, seek qualified advice.
