Short answer: you can copy a complete PS5 console backup to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive and keep that backup on a PC, but it is a PS5 restore package—not a normal, editable PC save file. Sony’s current PlayStation PC guidance says saved data cannot be transferred between the PS4 or PS5 version and the PC version of a PlayStation Studios title. For a native PS5 save, the supported preservation method is PlayStation Plus cloud storage; for a PS4-format save stored on a PS5, Sony documents copying it to and from USB.
That distinction determines what you should do. Use a full backup when you need a recoverable copy of the console. Use cloud storage when you want to download a native PS5 save to another PS5. Use the PS4 saved-data menu when the game actually uses a PS4-format save. If your goal is to continue the same save in a PC installation, expect to start again unless that particular game provides its own officially supported cross-save or account-progression feature.

What “transfer a PS5 save to PC” can mean
The phrase covers several different operations, and they do not have the same result. A PC can act as storage for a PS5 backup, but it does not become a supported destination for a native PS5 save file. The table below separates the formats and destinations that Sony documents.

In practical terms, “copy to PC” and “use on PC” are different goals. Copying preserves a package for later PS5 restoration. It does not make the package readable by a PC game.

Option 1: Make a complete PS5 backup and store it on a PC
Choose this route when you want a broad safety copy of the console, or when you need to move the backup package through a computer. Sony’s full-backup workflow can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and settings.
Prepare the USB drive
- Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Do not confuse this drive with a USB extended-storage drive used for installed game data. Sony treats those as different storage uses and the extended-storage drive cannot be used for the full backup workflow.
- Make sure the drive has enough free space for the material you select for backup. The console will report whether the available space is sufficient when you begin.
- Copy any unrelated files off the drive first if you plan to reformat it; formatting removes its existing contents.
Create the backup on the PS5
- Connect the FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive directly to the PS5.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Choose Back Up and Restore.
- Select Back Up Your PS5.
- Review the categories the console offers, then start the backup and leave the drive connected until the operation completes.
The result is a console backup package, not a collection of ordinary game-save files. You may connect the drive to a PC afterward to copy the package to another disk or keep an archival duplicate. The supported action described by Sony is still Back Up and Restore on a PS5; opening folders on the PC does not create a supported way to launch, edit, or import the save into a PC game.
What this backup is useful for
- Recovering a PS5 after a storage failure or major reset.
- Moving a broad set of console data to another PS5 through the restore process.
- Keeping an offline copy in addition to cloud storage.
- Preserving settings, captures, applications, and saved data together when a full-console snapshot is more useful than a single-game copy.
It is not a conversion utility. A PC can transport and store the package, but Sony does not document a PC-side extraction or conversion method that produces a usable PC save.
Option 2: Preserve a native PS5 save with cloud storage
For a game’s native PS5 saved data, PlayStation Plus cloud storage is the supported user-facing route identified in Sony’s storage documentation. This is appropriate when you want to download the save on a PS5 after reinstalling a game, replacing a console, or moving to another console under the applicable account rules.

What cloud storage does—and does not—do
- It preserves the PS5 save for use on a PS5 through the PlayStation account and cloud-storage workflow.
- It does not create a normal file that you can place in a PC game’s save directory.
- It is separate from keeping a full-console USB backup; using one does not turn the other into a PC-compatible format.
If your only target is a Windows or other PC version of the game, uploading the native PS5 save to the cloud will not by itself solve the compatibility problem. Check whether the individual game advertises an official cross-save or account-progression feature before you rely on any shared progress.
Option 3: Copy a PS4-format save from a PS5 to USB
A PS5 can contain saved data in the PS4 format. Sony provides a direct USB-copy workflow for that category, unlike the documented handling of native PS5 saved data.
Copy the PS4 save to a USB drive
- Connect a compatible USB drive to the PS5.
- Open Settings.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS4).
- Select Upload or Delete from Console Storage.
- Choose Copy to USB Drive, select the game’s saved data, and confirm the copy.
The reverse operation is available from the same saved-data area: choose the command for copying saved data from the USB drive back to console storage. Treat the USB copy as console data. Keeping it on a PC is useful for storage, but the documented destination remains PlayStation console storage rather than a PC game installation.
Moving a PS4 save into a PS5 version
Sony says PS4-to-PS5 transfer can use a network connection, USB, or PlayStation Plus cloud storage. That describes the transport mechanism, not a guarantee that every game will recognize the save after the upgrade. The game’s developer decides whether a PS4-format save can be imported into that title’s PS5 version, whether the import is one-way, and whether any progress or features are excluded.

Before deleting the PS4 version or its data, verify the game’s own transfer instructions. Keep the original PS4-format save until the PS5 version has successfully accepted it and you have confirmed that the expected progress appears.
Can a PS5 save be used by the PC version?
For PlayStation Studios titles, Sony’s current PlayStation PC Games FAQ states: “It is currently not possible to transfer your save data from the PS4 or PS5 version to the PC version of a PlayStation Studios title, or vice versa.” That is the decisive limitation for the common question “Can I use my PS5 save on the PC version?”
A full backup does not override that platform rule. Neither does copying a USB package to a computer. A save may be encrypted, signed, organized for console storage, or otherwise dependent on the console and account environment; the official material does not provide a supported procedure for extracting or decrypting it into a PC-compatible file. Do not treat an unknown converter or an edited backup as an established solution, and do not risk your only copy of the console data while experimenting.

The only reliable exception is an official feature supplied by the game’s publisher or developer, such as account-based cross-save or shared progression. That feature is separate from Sony’s generic backup tools. Its availability, supported platforms, transfer direction, and account-linking requirements vary by title, so the game’s current support documentation is the authority.

If no such feature exists, the supported choices are to begin a new PC save, continue using the console version, or play the console version through an approved remote-play workflow. Remote play leaves the save on the console; it is not a conversion of the save into the PC installation.
How to restore a PS5 backup safely
Restoration is powerful but destructive. Use it only after checking the account, the backup drive, and the software-version requirement.
Rules that affect restoration
- Restoring a backup erases all data currently saved on the destination PS5. Move or synchronize anything you still need before proceeding.
- The PS5’s system-software version must be the same as, or newer than, the version present when the backup was made.
- Backup data is linked to the PlayStation account. If you have never signed in to PlayStation services, restoration is limited to the same console; restoring to another console requires the same account.
- A PC-stored copy is only useful if the backup package remains intact and the USB drive can be read by the PS5.
Restore procedure
- Connect the USB drive containing the backup package to the destination PS5.
- Confirm that the destination console is running system software at least as new as the software used for the backup.
- Open Settings, then System, then System Software.
- Open Back Up and Restore and select the restore option.
- Review the warning that current console data will be erased.
- Verify that you are using the PlayStation account associated with the backup when restoring to another console.
- Start the restore and keep the console and USB drive connected until it finishes.
Because the process is destructive, make a separate copy of any newly created saves, screenshots, clips, or settings on the destination console before selecting Restore.

Troubleshooting common failure points
The PS5 does not offer the backup drive
- Check that the drive is formatted FAT32 or exFAT for the full-console backup.
- Confirm that you are not using a drive configured as USB extended storage for installed game data; Sony distinguishes that format and use from backup media.
- Reconnect the drive directly to the console and retry the menu path under Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore.
The backup will not fit
Free space must be sufficient for the categories selected by the console. Remove unrelated files from the backup drive or use a larger FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive. Do not interrupt a backup that has already started; wait for the console to report completion before disconnecting the media.

A PS4 save does not appear in the PS5 version
Confirm that the copied item is listed under Saved Data (PS4), that it was copied back to console storage, and that you are using the correct game edition. Even when the USB transfer succeeds, the developer may not support importing that PS4 save into the PS5 edition. Preserve the original USB copy while checking the game’s transfer rules.
The restore option warns about incompatible software
Update the destination PS5 so its system-software version is the same as or newer than the version used to create the backup. The backup cannot be treated as a normal file archive that bypasses this requirement.
You restored to another PS5 and the data is unavailable
Check the PlayStation account. Sony links backup data to the account, and restoration to another console requires the same account. If the original console had never signed in to PlayStation services, restoration is limited to that same console.

That behavior is expected when the game has no official cross-save or account-progression path. A console backup, cloud copy, or PS4 USB save is not a documented PC save format. Keep playing on the console, use an officially supported remote-play option, or begin a new PC save.
A safe plan before you move or replace a console
- Identify whether the game is running a native PS5 version or a PS4 version on the PS5.
- For native PS5 saved data, synchronize the save through PlayStation Plus cloud storage if that is your supported preservation route.
- For PS4-format saved data, make a USB copy through the Saved Data (PS4) menu.
- Create a complete FAT32- or exFAT-based PS5 backup when you also need settings, captures, applications, or a broader recovery point.
- Keep the original console data and USB copies until the destination PS5 has been tested.
- Before restoring, verify the PlayStation account and system-software version, and remember that restoration erases current destination data.
- If the destination is a PC, check the individual game’s official cross-save documentation first; if it has no such feature, plan for a new PC save rather than a conversion project.
Bottom line
A PC can safely store a PS5 backup, but it cannot turn that backup into a normal PC save through Sony’s documented tools. Native PS5 saves are supported through PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 use, while PS4-format saves on a PS5 have a USB-copy workflow and may transfer to a PS5 edition only when the developer supports it. For a PC version, Sony’s stated platform limitation means you should rely only on an official game-specific cross-save system; otherwise, start a new save or continue on the console.
