For a cloud-compatible game, open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, compare the console and cloud timestamps, and back up the newer console copy. If both consoles are available, use Transfer Your Save Data for an individual game. If you are moving to a Switch 2, use its system-transfer process deliberately because unsupported saves can be removed from the old console. If the old console is being sold, use server system transfer before handing it over.
A game-service shutdown does not create one universal rule for local saves, cloud backups, or exports. Nintendo’s support guidance explains how to preserve the data, but each publisher may issue additional, title-specific instructions. Complete the applicable transfer before the announced shutdown.

Choose the right transfer route first
Your best method depends on three questions: does the game support Save Data Cloud, do you still have the original console, and are you moving to another Switch or specifically to a Switch 2?

Do not wait for the shutdown day. A transfer requires the source console to be working for the relevant procedure, and an overwritten save cannot be recovered.

Check whether the game supports cloud backup
Nintendo says the vast majority of Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch games support Save Data Cloud backup, but “vast majority” is not the same as every game. Confirm the individual title before relying on the cloud.
- Open the game’s listing in Nintendo eShop, or open its Nintendo product-information page.
- Look for the Save Data Cloud compatibility indication.
- Check the exact edition and user profile that owns the save. A title’s compatibility does not guarantee that every mode, profile, or publisher-operated service will remain available after a shutdown.
If the game is not marked as compatible, skip the cloud procedure and transfer the individual save while the original console still works. A microSD card, USB drive, or physical cartridge is not a substitute for Nintendo’s save-transfer procedures; the cited Nintendo methods do not copy a Switch save to those devices.
Back up a cloud-compatible save now
Cloud backup is the least disruptive option when the game supports it and you can maintain Nintendo Switch Online access.

Compare the two save versions
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the user profile that contains the game save.
- Select the game.
- Inspect the latest console-save and cloud-save timestamps.
The timestamps tell you which copy contains your latest progress. Treat this check as a safety gate: selecting the wrong direction can overwrite the copy you intended to preserve.
Send the newer console copy to the cloud
If the console timestamp is newer, choose Back Up Save Data. Wait for the operation to finish, then return to the game entry and confirm that the cloud timestamp reflects the recent session. Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered, so do not approve an overwrite until you have compared the dates and times.
Restore a newer cloud copy
If the cloud timestamp is newer than the copy on the console, choose Download Save Data. This replaces the console’s current save with the selected cloud backup. If you have played recently on that console, stop and decide whether those newer local changes are expendable before downloading.

Keep the membership condition in mind
Nintendo states: “If your Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, you will not have access to your Save Data Cloud backups.” Nintendo also says previous backups can be accessed again if you resubscribe within 180 days after the membership expires. That 180-day window is a recovery condition, not a reason to postpone the backup: make the backup while the membership is active and verify its timestamp before the game’s shutdown.

Use an individual save transfer when you have the original console and the destination console, especially for a game that does not support Save Data Cloud.
Start the individual transfer
- On the original console, open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Data Management.
- Select Transfer Your Save Data.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to identify the sending console, the receiving console, the user, and the game.
- Confirm the transfer only after the selected user and title match the save you intend to move.
- Leave both consoles available until the system reports that the transfer is complete.
Nintendo describes this feature as a way to move an individual game save file to a different system. It retains save data for games that do not support Save Data Cloud, which is why it is the critical method for unsupported titles.
Understand the one-way consequence
The associated save is removed from the original console after an individual transfer. This is a move, not a duplicate. If you need a working copy on both consoles, do not use this route as though it were a backup; first determine whether the title supports cloud backup or whether the game provides its own in-game account or export feature.
Move to Switch 2 with local communication transfer
Switch 2 offers a broader system-transfer route for people changing consoles. It is different from moving one save file through Transfer Your Save Data, so choose it with care.

Nintendo says local communication transfer copies supported cloud-backup saves as part of the system-transfer process. This can be convenient when the destination is a Switch 2 and you want to move more than one item at once.

What can be deleted from the source
Nintendo warns that saves for unlinked users and games without cloud support are deleted from the source console during this local communication transfer. Before confirming, identify every user profile on the old console and every game that lacks cloud compatibility. If an unsupported game’s save is important, use the individual transfer route while both consoles are available instead of relying on the broader system transfer.
Use a deliberate sequence
- On both consoles, open the system-transfer option shown in the Switch 2 setup or system settings.
- Read the list of users and data that the transfer will include or remove.
- Link or identify the users that must remain associated with their saves.
- Check the game list for titles without cloud support.
- For any unsupported title you want to keep, cancel the broad transfer and perform an individual save transfer first.
- Resume the Switch 2 system transfer only after you have protected those exceptions.
- After completion, open the transferred games on Switch 2 and verify that the expected user and progress are present.
Use server system transfer before selling the old console
Server system transfer is designed for a situation in which you will no longer keep the original console, such as a trade-in or sale. It still requires the source console to be available when you begin; you cannot upload its data after it has already been handed away or initialized.
What happens during the process
- Start the server system-transfer procedure on the source console and follow the on-screen upload instructions.
- Review the data and user information that will be uploaded before confirming.
- Complete the upload while the source console is still in your possession.
- Record the download deadline shown during setup.
- After the upload, the source console is initialized.
- On the replacement console, begin the corresponding download before the displayed deadline.
Nintendo says the uploaded transfer data is stored on its server for up to one year, until retrieval, cancellation, or the download deadline. “Up to one year” is a maximum storage period, not a promise that every transfer remains available for a full year; the deadline displayed during setup controls your case.
What a game shutdown changes—and what it does not
A shutdown usually refers to an online service operated by the game publisher, such as matchmaking, events, rankings, or account services. It does not automatically tell you whether the local save remains playable, whether Nintendo’s cloud backup remains accessible, or whether the publisher offers an export.
Nintendo’s support pages document the backup and transfer mechanisms, but they do not promise that every game’s server shutdown preserves cloud access or provides an export. Read the game’s own shutdown notice for title-specific deadlines, offline limitations, and account requirements, then complete the Nintendo backup or transfer before that deadline.
Preserving a save also cannot preserve a service that the game needs to validate progress. A transferred file may retain local progression while online features, downloadable events, leaderboards, or publisher account functions stop working. Treat save preservation and continued online operation as separate questions.

Verify the destination before you erase or sell anything
Verification catches an incorrect user selection or an outdated cloud copy before the original data is gone.
- Open the destination console’s Save Data Cloud page, when the title supports it, and confirm the expected cloud timestamp.
- Launch the game with the intended user profile and check a recent save slot, chapter, inventory, or other progress marker that you recognize.
- For a game without cloud support, verify the save directly after the individual transfer; do not rely only on a completion message.
- For a Switch 2 system transfer, check both linked users and the games that were identified as exceptions.
- For a server transfer, confirm that the destination has downloaded the data before the source console is permanently unavailable.
Do not overwrite a destination save merely to test a transfer. If the destination already contains progress, compare dates and decide which version you want before selecting Download Save Data or confirming a move.

The game does not appear in Save Data Cloud
First verify that you selected the user profile that actually played the game. If the title still lacks a cloud entry, check its eShop or Nintendo product-information listing. If it is not cloud-compatible, use Transfer Your Save Data while the source console works. Do not assume that a cartridge, microSD card, or USB drive contains a transferable save.
The cloud copy is older than the console copy
Cancel the download and choose Back Up Save Data instead. Recheck the timestamp after the backup finishes. Downloading first would replace the newer local progress with the older cloud version, and Nintendo warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered.
The console you want to send from is unavailable
An individual transfer and a server system transfer both depend on access to the source at the point where the data is prepared. If the console was already sold, lost, or initialized without a backup, Nintendo’s documented procedures cannot recreate an unuploaded local save. Contact the game publisher only if its shutdown notice describes a separate account or export mechanism.

You want the save to remain on both consoles
An individual transfer removes the save from the original console, so it is not the right choice for duplication. A cloud-compatible title can be restored from its cloud backup on another console while the backup remains subject to Nintendo Switch Online access rules. For a Switch 2 local system transfer, read Nintendo’s warning carefully: supported cloud-backup saves can be copied, but unsupported or unlinked-user saves are removed from the source.
The transfer is interrupted or the result is unclear
Do not repeatedly start different transfer types without first checking which console currently has the newest verified copy. Reopen the relevant data-management screen, inspect timestamps and user profiles, and follow the recovery option shown by the consoles. If the source still contains the save, preserve it before attempting another operation.
Mistakes to avoid before the shutdown date
- Waiting until the service goes offline: the source console may be needed for an individual or server transfer, and a title-specific deadline may be earlier than the public shutdown.
- Assuming every game has cloud backup: compatibility is title-specific; check the eShop or product information.
- Downloading without comparing timestamps: this can replace newer console progress with an older cloud copy.
- Treating an individual transfer as a backup: Nintendo removes that save from the original console.
- Running a Switch 2 system transfer without checking exceptions: unsupported-game and unlinked-user saves can be deleted from the source.
- Giving away the source before server upload: the server method cannot upload a console you no longer possess.
- Using removable storage as a save archive: Nintendo’s documented procedures do not support microSD cards, USB drives, or cartridges as generic save backups.
A practical pre-shutdown checklist
- Find the game’s announced shutdown date and any earlier deadline in the title-specific notice.
- Confirm which Nintendo user owns the save.
- Check the title’s Save Data Cloud compatibility in Nintendo eShop or Nintendo product information.
- If compatible, open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud and compare timestamps.
- Back up the newer console copy, or download the newer cloud copy only after confirming that is the version you want.
- If incompatible and both consoles are present, use Transfer Your Save Data and remember that the original save will be removed.
- If moving to Switch 2, protect unsupported and unlinked-user saves before starting local communication transfer.
- If selling the old console, complete server system transfer, note the displayed download deadline, and verify the destination download.
- Launch the game on the destination and check recognizable progress before erasing, selling, or initializing the source.
Examples of the correct choice
Cloud-compatible game, same account, new console
Check the cloud entry, compare timestamps, back up the newer console copy, and download it on the destination console. Keep Nintendo Switch Online access available; if membership expires, Nintendo says the backups cannot be accessed, although previous backups can be accessed again after resubscribing within 180 days.
Unsupported game, both consoles working
Use the individual transfer path. This is the documented way to retain a save for a title without Save Data Cloud. Verify the destination immediately because the source copy is removed after the move.

Switch 2 upgrade with several games
Use local communication transfer only after reviewing its warnings. Let supported cloud-backup saves copy, but handle every game without cloud support separately if you need to preserve its progress on the source or avoid losing it during the system transfer.
Old console trade-in
Start server system transfer before the trade-in. The source is initialized after upload, and Nintendo stores the transfer data for up to one year subject to the deadline shown during setup. Download and verify the data on the replacement console before the deadline.
