The safest way to move Nintendo 3DS save data is Nintendo’s built-in System Transfer. Keep both handhelds together, connect them to wireless broadband, and open System Settings > Other Settings > System Transfer on each. On the old system choose Transfer from Nintendo 3DS, then Send from This System. On the new system choose Transfer from Nintendo 3DS, then Receive from Nintendo 3DS.
The route you use after that depends mainly on the source card’s capacity and whether the game is downloaded or on a physical Game Card. A source SD card of 4 GB or less can use a local wireless transfer, while larger cards generally require a PC copy or a save-data-only option. Downloaded games and their saves move with the system-transfer process; progress for a physical 3DS Game Card remains on that cartridge.

What you need before starting
A system transfer changes the destination console, so prepare both devices before opening the transfer menu. You must have both systems on hand for the operation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- The source 3DS-family console containing your games and saves.
- The target 3DS, New 3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS XL, 2DS or New 2DS XL that will receive the data.
- Wireless broadband access for the internet portion of the transfer.
- Both systems charged. Nintendo UK recommends having two AC adapters available so neither system loses power during the process.
- The source SD card and, when required, a compatible target microSD card, SD/microSD adapter or card reader, and a computer.
- A size #0 cross-head Phillips screwdriver if you need to remove the microSD cover on a New Nintendo 3DS-family system.
Do not create or register the source system’s Nintendo Network ID (NNID) on the target before transferring. The transfer can overwrite the target’s NNID setup, and registering it in advance can prevent the intended process.

Back up any photographs and recordings already stored on the target if you want to preserve them. Depending on the transfer choice, data on the target can be deleted.
Quick decision guide
Identify the game type and the source card before you start. This avoids buying or borrowing equipment you do not need and prevents you from expecting a cartridge save to appear on an SD card.
- Downloaded game on a 4 GB-or-smaller source card: use the local wireless choice in System Transfer. It requires both consoles and wireless broadband, but no computer or card reader.
- Downloaded game on a source card larger than 4 GB: choose the PC-copy route or the save-data-only route shown by the wizard. The PC route carries the complete downloaded-content set; the save-data-only route is for cases where you do not need every downloaded title and the wizard supports that choice.
- Original 3DS-family console moving to a New 3DS-family console: plan for a full-size SD card on the source and a blank microSD card on the target. The PC-copy procedure bridges those different formats.
- Physical Game Card: the save normally travels with the cartridge. Put that same Game Card in the new handheld instead of trying to copy its progress as a downloaded save.
- Retail game being replaced by its downloadable edition: use Save Data Transfer Tool, not a normal console transfer alone. It is a one-way move and removes the original retail save after completion.
These distinctions matter because SD capacity, card format, and game format determine what the transfer wizard can offer. A larger card changes the storage operation; it does not by itself make supported digital saves impossible to preserve.
Choose the transfer method by card and hardware
The transfer wizard determines which choices are available. Use the following table to select the likely route before you begin.
| Situation | Likely method | What moves | Extra equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Source SD card is 4 GB or smaller | Local wireless System Transfer | Current system-transfer content, including downloaded software and its save data | Neither a PC nor a card reader; allow up to two hours |
| Source card is larger than 4 GB | System Transfer with Nintendo’s PC-copy option, or the save-data-only option offered by the wizard | PC copy can move the complete downloaded-content set; save-data-only moves only the supported save data | For PC copy, a computer, card reader or adapter, and a blank target card |
| Original 3DS, 3DS XL or 2DS moving to a New 3DS-family console | System Transfer followed by the PC-copy card operation | Downloaded software, downloaded-software saves, update data and add-on content in the Nintendo 3DS folder | Source SD card, blank target microSD card, reader or adapter, and possibly a #0 Phillips screwdriver |
| Physical 3DS Game Card | Move the cartridge itself to the target handheld | Game progress stored on that Game Card | The original Game Card |
Nintendo says a local wireless transfer for a source card of 4 GB or smaller may take up to two hours. A larger source card does not automatically mean your saves are lost; it means the transfer needs a different storage step.
Run the built-in System Transfer
- Update both handhelds if prompted. Keep both systems connected to wireless broadband and install any required system update before starting.
- Open the transfer menu on both systems. On each console go to System Settings > Other Settings > System Transfer.
- Identify the source and target. On the old console select Transfer from Nintendo 3DS, then Send from This System. On the new console select Transfer from Nintendo 3DS, then Receive from Nintendo 3DS.
- Read each warning and confirm. The wizard explains what will be moved and what target data can be removed. Do not proceed until photos, recordings and any other target-only data you want have been backed up.
- Choose the storage route offered by the wizard. A small source card may use local wireless. A larger card may show Copy via PC or a save-data-only choice.
- Leave both consoles powered and together. Do not close the process, remove a card or turn off either system while the transfer is running. Follow the on-screen prompts until both consoles report completion.
- Finish any card-copy step. If the wizard selected PC copy, complete the card operation described in the next section before launching downloaded games on the target.
The internet portion transfers the Nintendo eShop account, NNID and friend list. The target’s previous setup can be replaced, which is why Nintendo requires both systems and warns against registering the NNID on the target first.
Use the PC-copy method for a larger card
The PC method is the important path when the source card is larger than 4 GB or when an original 3DS-family SD card is being moved to a New 3DS-family microSD card. It copies the complete Nintendo 3DS folder rather than selecting individual game folders.

- Start System Transfer on both consoles. Follow the source and target menu paths above. When the transfer wizard offers the storage choices, select Copy via PC.
- Turn both systems off before removing cards. Never pull an SD or microSD card from a powered-on console.
- Connect the source SD card to the computer. Use a compatible SD reader or a microSD-to-SD adapter if necessary.
- Copy the entire
Nintendo 3DSfolder to the computer. Do not copy only a game subfolder. Nintendo identifies this folder as containing downloaded software, downloaded-software save data, update data and add-on content. - Prepare a blank target microSD card. The destination card must be blank for Nintendo’s copy procedure; do not merge the old folder with unrelated files already on the card.
- Insert the blank target microSD card into the computer. New Nintendo 3DS-family systems use microSD rather than the full-size SD format used by original 3DS-family systems.
- Copy the complete
Nintendo 3DSfolder from the computer to the target microSD card. Preserve the folder name and its internal structure. - Safely eject the card and insert it into the target console. On a New Nintendo 3DS-family model, remove the rear cover with a size #0 cross-head Phillips screwdriver if your model requires it.
- Complete the transfer wizard. Keep the system powered on and do not interrupt the process while the target reads the copied content.
Power loss or an interrupted copy can leave downloaded content unusable. If the computer reports an error, stop and check that the source folder was copied completely and that the target card has enough usable capacity before trying again.
How digital-game saves are handled
Downloaded games are tied to the system-transfer and storage process. The downloaded software and its save data are included in the transfer path, and the PC method also carries update data and add-on content inside the Nintendo 3DS folder.
After the target finishes, insert the target card if it was removed for the PC operation, then launch a transferred game from the target HOME Menu. The save belongs to the transferred downloaded installation, not to a manually copied standalone file. Do not rename, split or selectively merge the Nintendo 3DS folder.
If you choose the save-data-only option instead of PC copy, read the wizard’s list carefully. That route is intentionally narrower than moving the whole downloaded library. It is useful when the goal is supported save data rather than every title, update and add-on file, but it does not replace the complete-folder procedure for a full downloaded-content move.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How physical 3DS Game Card saves work
For a retail 3DS Game Card, move the cartridge to the new handheld. Nintendo states that game progress such as completed levels and collected items is saved to the Game Card. The target console can read that progress when the same cartridge is inserted.
Some Game Cards can also store SpotPass or StreetPass information on the SD card or in system memory. That auxiliary information is different from the main game progress. A system transfer can handle supported system and downloaded data, but it does not turn the cartridge’s progress into a downloadable save file.
Keep the cartridge available after the move. The new handheld needs the physical card whenever you want to play that retail copy, and a copied SD folder cannot substitute for the cartridge’s game-progress data.

Move a retail save to a downloadable version
If you own a retail Game Card and want to continue with the downloadable version of that same game, use Nintendo’s Save Data Transfer Tool where the game supports it. This is a separate operation from the full System Transfer.
- Install or open the Save Data Transfer Tool and make sure the console has internet access.
- Follow the tool’s instructions to select the retail game and its downloadable counterpart.
- Keep the Game Card inserted and do not power off or remove it while the tool is working.
- Wait for the tool to report completion before starting the downloadable version.
This tool moves the retail save; it does not make a second copy. Nintendo says the original save is deleted after transfer. The operation cannot move a downloadable save back to a retail card, and it cannot move a save between two copies of the same format. Treat it as a one-way retail-to-downloadable conversion and make sure you have selected the intended game before confirming.
New 3DS and 2DS card differences
Original 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS systems use a full-size SD card. New 3DS-family systems use microSD, and accessing the card may require removing the system’s rear cover. This physical difference is why Nintendo’s PC procedure uses a blank target microSD card when moving from an original model to a New model.
The card format does not change the save rules. Downloaded content remains part of the system-transfer data, while progress for a physical Game Card remains on that cartridge. The card operation only ensures that the target has the downloaded files needed to recognize and run the transferred software.
Check the target model before purchasing accessories. A full-size SD reader or adapter is useful for an original console’s card, while a New model requires access to a microSD card. A compatible microSD card, an SD/microSD reader or adapter, and a #0 cross-head Phillips screwdriver are the relevant accessory categories; the exact availability and compatibility should be checked for your hardware.

The target already has an NNID
Do not register the source NNID on the target before transferring. If you have already begun setting up the target, stop before attempting another transfer and follow the system’s transfer prompts rather than trying to combine accounts manually. Nintendo’s transfer process is designed to move the account information as part of the operation.
The transfer option does not show local wireless
Check the source card capacity. Nintendo’s local wireless guidance applies to a source card of 4 GB or smaller. With a larger card, select the PC-copy route or the save-data-only option presented by the transfer wizard.

The target cannot find downloaded games after PC copy
- Confirm that the full
Nintendo 3DSfolder was copied, not just individual files. - Confirm that the destination microSD card was blank before the copy.
- Check that the card is inserted correctly and that the target is fully powered off when you insert it.
- For an original-to-New-system transfer, verify that the source SD and target microSD were not reversed.
- Repeat the copy only after safely ejecting the card and confirming the computer completed the transfer.
The process is taking a long time
Local wireless transfer for a source card of 4 GB or smaller may take up to two hours. Larger collections can also require substantial time during the PC copy. Keep both systems connected to power and do not interpret a long progress period as permission to shut down.
The target contains photos or recordings I need
Back up those files before starting. Nintendo warns that target data may be deleted depending on the selected transfer choice; the transfer is not a general merge of two consoles.

A save was interrupted during Save Data Transfer Tool use
Never remove the Game Card or power off while that tool is running. Nintendo warns that interruption can corrupt or permanently lose the save. If an interruption has already occurred, avoid repeatedly launching or overwriting the game and use Nintendo’s support instructions for the affected title.
I only want one save, not the whole library
When the wizard offers a save-data-only route, read its supported-data description and use that option instead of copying the entire card. It is distinct from the PC method, which is intended to carry the complete downloaded-content set. Do not improvise by dragging out a single game folder; Nintendo’s PC instructions require the complete Nintendo 3DS folder.
Can I merge two consoles?
System Transfer is not a general merge. The target’s existing setup and selected data may be deleted or overwritten. Back up target photos and recordings first, and do not assume that content from two different NNID setups can be combined manually.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the result without risking the original data
- On the target, confirm that the transferred NNID, friend list and downloaded software appear as expected.
- Launch one transferred digital game and use its normal load menu to confirm that the existing save is present.
- For a physical game, insert the original Game Card and check the game’s progress screen.
- If you used the retail-to-downloadable Save Data Transfer Tool, verify the downloadable version before deleting or disposing of the Game Card.
- Keep the original SD card and Game Cards untouched until you have confirmed the games and saves you care about.
Check several types of content if your library contains them: one digital game, one physical Game Card, and any title with add-on content or updates. This confirms that the account transfer, card copy and cartridge behavior all match your expectations before you put the old system away.
The reliable rule is simple: use System Transfer for the consoles, use the complete Nintendo 3DS folder for a PC card copy, and move physical-game cartridges themselves. A larger card changes the storage procedure, not the ability to preserve supported saves.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need both 3DS systems to transfer saves?
Yes. Nintendo requires both systems to be on hand for System Transfer. The source sends the data and the target receives it during the same guided operation.
Will my digital games and saves move with the SD card?
Use System Transfer rather than moving the card by itself. Downloaded software and its save data are included in the transfer path; for a PC copy, copy the complete Nintendo 3DS folder to a blank target microSD card.
What if my source card is larger than 4 GB?
The wizard generally offers Nintendo’s PC-copy route or a save-data-only route instead of the small-card local wireless path. A larger card does not mean the supported saves are lost.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do physical 3DS cartridges keep their saves?
Yes. Nintendo says game progress such as completed levels and collected items is saved to the Game Card. Move the same cartridge to the new handheld.
Can I transfer a retail save to a digital copy?
Use Save Data Transfer Tool when the title supports it. It requires internet access, deletes the original retail save after transfer, and cannot move a downloadable save back to a retail card.
Can I register my NNID on the target first?
No. Do not create or register the source NNID on the target before System Transfer because the transfer can overwrite the target’s NNID setup.
What equipment is needed for an original 3DS to New 3DS move?
Plan for the source SD card, a blank target microSD card, a compatible reader or adapter, and possibly a size #0 cross-head Phillips screwdriver to access the New model’s card.

No. Nintendo says a local wireless transfer from a source card of 4 GB or smaller may take up to two hours. Keep both systems powered and do not interrupt it.
The Bottom Line
Use Nintendo’s System Transfer with both handhelds present. Cards of 4 GB or less may transfer locally; larger cards usually need the PC-copy or save-data-only route. For PC copy, move the complete Nintendo 3DS folder to a blank target microSD card. Digital saves follow downloaded content, while physical-game progress stays on the Game Card. Save Data Transfer Tool is only a one-way retail-to-downloadable move and deletes the original save.
