On Windows, the most reliable method is Sony’s Music Center for PC: connect the Walkman by USB, open the player, choose Music Library, select albums or tracks, and use the transfer control. On a Mac, Sony documents Content Transfer with Finder or iTunes. Some compatible models also accept files copied directly into the player’s MUSIC folder. Playlist support, USB modes, folder names, and internal-memory versus microSD behavior vary by model, so check the manual for your exact Walkman before transferring a large library.

Choose the transfer method that fits your Walkman

Sony has never used one transfer workflow for every Walkman generation. The player’s model, operating system, firmware, storage location, and playlist support determine which steps work. Use the following decision guide before connecting the cable.

Method Computer Best for Playlist handling Important limitation
Music Center for PC Windows Managed transfers, library metadata, and repeatable playlist maintenance Can transfer playlists on compatible models Features and supported formats differ by Walkman model
Windows Explorer Windows Quick file or folder copies when the model exposes storage normally Not supported on every model; playlist files may need a compatible format and location You must preserve Sony’s folder structure and root folder names
Content Transfer Mac, on supported models Dragging music from Finder or iTunes to the player or card Works only where the model and software support playlist transfer Operation can depend on the iTunes version; copyright-protected content cannot be transferred in Sony’s documented workflow
Finder or iTunes drag-and-drop Mac, on some models Models that present storage directly and do not require Content Transfer Model-dependent Folder, format, and playlist behavior must be confirmed in the model manual

For current Windows workflows, Music Center for PC is Sony’s successor to Media Go; Sony says Media Go support has ended. Older players can require a different application or transfer mode, so do not assume that a procedure for a newer Android-based Walkman applies to an older unit.

Prepare the Walkman and computer

Confirm the model-specific requirements

  • Look up the exact Walkman model manual and verify its USB transfer mode, supported audio formats, playlist formats, folder names, and whether playlists can be imported.
  • Check whether the music should go to internal memory, a microSD card, or either location. Some models treat those destinations as separate libraries.
  • Use a USB cable that carries data, not only power. A replacement cable must match the Walkman’s connector and your computer’s port.
  • Back up important music and playlists on the computer. A transfer is a copy operation; it should not be your only copy of irreplaceable recordings.

Make the library easy for the player to sort

Correct artist, album, track-number, genre, and title tags before transfer. Walkman library views are built from metadata, so a misspelled artist or blank album field can split recordings into unexpected entries. Keep one clearly named source playlist on the computer and transfer a fresh copy when its contents change.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If you will copy files directly, preserve Sony’s existing root folders and hierarchy. In particular, do not rename the player’s MUSIC folder. Renaming a root folder can make files invisible to the player even though they still occupy storage.

Transfer music from Windows with Music Center for PC

Sony’s documented Windows sequence is designed for compatible Walkman models and keeps the computer library and player transfer view connected.

  1. Install and launch Music Center for PC on the Windows computer.
  2. Connect the Walkman with the USB data cable and unlock the player if it asks for a connection confirmation.
  3. In Music Center for PC, open the Walkman device list. If the player offers a USB mode, select the mode intended for music or file transfer according to its manual.
  4. Choose Music Library in the device view.
  5. Select the albums or individual tracks to send. Use the library’s sorting and search tools to locate a complete album rather than selecting tracks one at a time when that is more convenient.
  6. Click the transfer control and choose the Walkman destination when the software presents a choice. On models with removable storage, verify whether the target is internal memory or the microSD card.
  7. Wait until Music Center for PC reports that the transfer has finished. Keep the Walkman connected during the entire operation.
  8. Use the computer’s safe-eject command, then disconnect the USB cable. Open the Walkman’s music library and allow it to scan new content if the player requests a database update.

Sony’s help guide describes the purpose of this workflow as transferring content stored on a Windows computer to the Walkman through Music Center for PC. The exact buttons, destination labels, and supported formats remain model-specific.

When Music Center does not list the Walkman

  • Reconnect the cable directly to the computer instead of through an unpowered hub.
  • Try another known data cable and another USB port.
  • Check the player’s USB mode in its settings; a charging-only or media-sync mode may not expose the storage that Music Center expects.
  • Close other programs that may have claimed the device, then restart Music Center for PC and reconnect the Walkman.
  • Verify the model manual for required software. A legacy unit may not be compatible with the current Music Center workflow.

Copy music directly with Windows Explorer

Direct copying is useful when a compatible Walkman appears as a normal storage device and you only need files, not a managed library. It is simpler than Music Center, but it gives you more responsibility for names, folders, metadata, and playlist compatibility.

  1. Connect the Walkman to Windows and wait for it to appear in File Explorer.
  2. Open the Walkman’s storage, then open the MUSIC folder. If the model uses a microSD card, select the card’s music location rather than internal memory.
  3. Open a second Explorer window containing the music files or folders on the computer.
  4. Drag the files or folders into the Walkman’s MUSIC folder. Keep the existing root folder names and hierarchy intact.
  5. Wait for all copy progress indicators to finish. Large lossless files can take substantially longer than compressed tracks.
  6. Safely eject the Walkman in Windows before unplugging it. Sony warns not to disconnect the USB cable during transfer because files can be damaged or become unplayable.

Explorer copying may place audio on the player without creating a playlist entry. If the model supports imported playlists, use the format and location specified in its manual; otherwise, create a playlist on the player from the transferred tracks.

Transfer music from a Mac

Content Transfer workflow

For supported models, Sony documents Content Transfer as the Mac route. It can take music from Finder or iTunes and send it to the Walkman’s internal memory or microSD card.

  1. Install and open Content Transfer for the Walkman model.
  2. Connect the player by USB and wait for Content Transfer to identify it.
  3. Choose the Walkman’s internal memory or the microSD card as the destination, if the model offers both.
  4. In Finder or iTunes, select the albums, tracks, or supported playlists to transfer.
  5. Drag the selection into the Content Transfer window or its designated device area.
  6. Wait for the transfer to complete, then use macOS’s eject control before disconnecting.

Sony notes that operation can depend on the installed iTunes version. The documented Content Transfer workflow does not transfer copyright-protected content. A model that supports direct Finder or iTunes drag-and-drop can use that method instead, but its folder and playlist rules still come from the model manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If macOS shows only charging

  • Use a cable and adapter that support data and connect directly where possible.
  • Check the Walkman’s USB connection or transfer-mode setting.
  • Quit and reopen Content Transfer after reconnecting the player.
  • Confirm that your Walkman model is listed as compatible with the installed Content Transfer version; not every generation uses the same Mac software.

Create and transfer playlists

Create a playlist in Music Center for PC

  1. Open Music Center for PC and create a playlist in the computer music library.
  2. Give it a clear, stable name such as Morning commute or Live recordings 2026. Avoid making several nearly identical lists with ambiguous names.
  3. Add tracks from the library and arrange them in the desired order.
  4. Open the Walkman transfer view and select the playlist rather than only its individual tracks.
  5. Choose the player destination and use the transfer control.
  6. Wait for completion and safely eject the Walkman.

Playlist transfer is model-dependent. Compatible players can receive playlists created in Music Center for PC, while other models may transfer only the audio files. If the player recognizes imported playlists, Sony documents m3u as a supported playlist format on applicable Walkman players.

Import a playlist from iTunes

Some compatible Walkman models accept playlists created in iTunes through the supported Mac or Windows transfer workflow. Select the playlist itself in the transfer view, not just the tracks it contains. If it does not appear on the player, verify that the model supports iTunes playlist import, that every referenced track was transferred, and that the playlist format is one the model recognizes.

Transfer playlists on newer Android-based Walkman models

  1. Connect the Android-based Walkman by USB.
  2. On the player, select File Transfer when the USB notification appears.
  3. In Music Center for PC, select the player’s internal memory or microSD card as the destination.
  4. Select the playlists to transfer and start the operation.
  5. Wait for completion, eject the player safely, and let its music database refresh.

Sony notes that one playlist import cannot target both internal memory and microSD at the same time. Choose one destination for that import, then perform a separate transfer if the model and playlist behavior allow a second copy.

Listen to and edit playlists on the player

Open the music library’s Playlists view to find imported lists. On an NW-A45-family player, a playlist can contain up to 999 tracks, according to Sony’s 2017 documentation. The playlist editor lets you change track order by dragging tracks. Deleting a playlist removes the list, not the underlying music files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some imported lists are intentionally read-only. Sony states that a playlist transferred from a computer cannot be edited in the Music player on the NW-WM1AM2/NW-WM1ZM2. To change it, edit the source playlist on the computer and transfer it again, or create a new editable playlist on the player from the same tracks.

Organize internal memory and microSD content

Choose one home for each playlist

Decide whether a playlist belongs in internal memory or on the microSD card before transferring it. Walkman software can treat those storage locations as separate libraries, and newer models may prevent a single imported playlist operation from addressing both at once. Use destination-specific names if you intentionally keep two versions, such as Running — card and Running — internal.

Keep one source of truth

Maintain the authoritative playlist on the computer. When its track order changes, re-transfer the updated list instead of editing one copy on the player and another on the computer. This prevents stale entries and makes it easier to rebuild the player after a card replacement or reset.

Preserve tags and folders

Use consistent artist and album tags, stable track numbers, and readable titles. With direct file copy, keep Sony’s root folder names, including MUSIC, and avoid moving files into arbitrary top-level folders unless the manual explicitly supports them. Folder organization helps you find files during maintenance, but the player’s library usually relies primarily on embedded metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a playlist or song does not appear

The audio file is present but missing from the library

  • Confirm that the file is in a folder and format supported by the model.
  • Check artist, album, title, and track-number tags; blank or inconsistent tags can place a song in an unexpected view.
  • Give the player time to rescan after disconnecting safely. If it has a manual database-update command, run it.
  • If you used Explorer or Finder, verify that you copied into the model’s expected MUSIC folder rather than a similarly named folder on the computer.

The playlist is absent but all songs are visible

  • Confirm that the model supports computer-created playlist import.
  • Transfer the playlist itself through Music Center for PC or the supported Content Transfer workflow; copying only the audio files does not necessarily create a list.
  • Check the required playlist format, such as m3u on applicable models, and ensure the playlist references files that are actually on the same destination.
  • Look in the correct storage library. A list on microSD will not always appear when you browse internal-memory playlists.

The playlist is visible but tracks are unavailable

  • The playlist may point to files that were not transferred, were renamed, or were placed on a different storage destination.
  • Rebuild or re-transfer the playlist after confirming the final file paths and names.
  • Do not rename or reorganize the files after importing a playlist unless you are prepared to transfer the list again.

The transfer stops or files will not play

  • Never unplug during a copy. A premature disconnect can damage files or leave them unplayable.
  • Retry with a direct USB connection and a known data cable.
  • Check free space on the selected internal memory or microSD card.
  • Verify that the audio format is supported by the exact Walkman model.
  • For older players, use the software and transfer mode specified by that model’s manual rather than assuming Music Center for PC is compatible.

Music Center for PC or direct copying?

Consideration Music Center for PC Explorer/Finder copying
Operating system Windows Windows Explorer or Finder on supported models
Ease of a first transfer Guided device and library workflow Fast drag-and-drop once the storage layout is known
Playlist maintenance Designed to transfer computer playlists where the model supports them May copy audio without creating or updating playlists
Metadata management Uses the managed computer library and its tags Depends on tags already embedded in files
Storage targeting Can expose internal memory or microSD choices on compatible models You must open the intended storage volume yourself
Folder responsibility Software handles the model’s transfer path You must preserve folders such as MUSIC
Best long-term use Maintaining a changing library and repeatable playlists Occasional file copies or models that do not support managed software

Choose Music Center for PC when playlists, destination control, and repeatable synchronization matter. Choose direct copying when you need a quick file transfer and your model’s manual confirms that normal storage access is supported.

Safe transfer and copyright rules

  • Wait for the transfer and eject process to finish before removing the cable.
  • Keep a computer backup of purchased or personally recorded music.
  • Sony states that transferred content is limited to private use; other uses require permission from the copyright holders.
  • Do not assume that a file playable on a computer is supported by every Walkman. Confirm the model’s audio and playlist format list.

A repeatable workflow for a clean Walkman library

  1. Identify the exact model and read its transfer and playlist sections.
  2. Clean tags and create one authoritative playlist collection on the computer.
  3. Choose Music Center for PC on Windows, Content Transfer on supported Macs, or direct copying only when the model supports it.
  4. Select internal memory or microSD deliberately and keep each playlist on its intended destination.
  5. Transfer albums, tracks, and playlists, then wait for completion.
  6. Safely eject the Walkman and check both the music library and the Playlists view.
  7. If something is missing, troubleshoot the destination, folder name, metadata, playlist format, and model compatibility before copying everything again.

This process keeps the computer library authoritative, avoids broken playlist references, and respects the differences between Walkman generations.
