How to Transfer Minecraft Dungeons II Save Data from Switch to Switch 2

To move only your Minecraft Dungeons II progress, use Nintendo’s nearby-console save-data transfer. Put the original Switch and Switch 2 close together and online, then link the same Nintendo Account to the relevant user on both systems. Nintendo says this method does not require Nintendo Switch Online. If you are replacing the entire console, use the Switch-to-Switch 2 System Transfer instead. Minecraft Dungeons II is listed for Switch 2 with Save Data Cloud support, giving Nintendo Switch Online members a separate backup-and-download option.

Choose the transfer method that fits your situation

Nintendo provides three practical routes. The best one depends on whether both consoles are available, whether you want one save or an entire console migration, and whether you have Nintendo Switch Online.

Method What it moves What you need Important source-console behavior
Nearby-console save-data transfer An individual Minecraft Dungeons II save Both consoles close together, online, with the same Nintendo Account linked to a user on each Nintendo says Nintendo Switch Online is not required
Local System Transfer Users, settings, software entitlements and supported save data together Both consoles available during Switch 2 setup Supported cloud-backed saves can remain on the original Switch and be copied; some other source data can be deleted after confirmation
Server transfer A replacement-console transfer uploaded to Nintendo’s servers The source Switch must be available to upload first; the destination must be ready before the retention period ends The source console is initialized, and Nintendo says the uploaded transfer data is stored for up to one year
Save Data Cloud A supported game save backed up on one console and downloaded on another Supported game, same Nintendo Account and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership Useful when the consoles are not together; availability depends on the game and account

For a single Minecraft Dungeons II character, start with nearby-console save-data transfer. Do not begin a full system or server transfer merely because you are moving one game; those workflows affect users, settings and other data.

Prepare both consoles before moving the save

  • Have the original Switch and Switch 2 physically available if you are using nearby transfer or local System Transfer.
  • Connect both systems to the internet and keep them close together during the operation.
  • On each console, identify the user that owns the Minecraft Dungeons II progress. The same Nintendo Account must be linked to a user on both consoles.
  • Keep the original save intact until Minecraft Dungeons II has launched successfully on Switch 2 and your character and progress are visible.
  • If you plan to use cloud backup, confirm that the game is supported and that the Nintendo Account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • Do not treat the game card or a microSD card as the save-transfer mechanism. Save data belongs to the Nintendo Account user and console, and Nintendo’s supported routes are system transfer and cloud backup.

Close Minecraft Dungeons II before starting. This avoids leaving an unsaved session open while the system reads the save. Keep both consoles powered and do not move them out of network range until the on-screen process reports completion.

Move only Minecraft Dungeons II with nearby-console transfer

This is the narrowest option: it is designed for selecting a game’s save rather than migrating the entire Switch. Nintendo identifies the same-Account requirement as mandatory: “The same Nintendo Account must be linked to a user on both consoles to transfer save data.”

  1. Open the old Switch’s settings. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings and choose the save-data transfer option for sending data to another console.
  2. Prepare Switch 2 to receive. On Switch 2, open System Settings and choose the corresponding option to receive save data.
  3. Keep the consoles together and online. Leave both systems near each other and connected to the internet while they discover one another.
  4. Check the user identity. Confirm that the user selected on each console is linked to the same Nintendo Account. A matching game title alone is not enough; the save is associated with the user and account.
  5. Select the game. When the source console displays eligible saves, choose Minecraft Dungeons II.
  6. Confirm the transfer. Review the destination and selected user, then follow every on-screen confirmation until the system reports that the operation is finished.
  7. Test before changing anything else. Start Minecraft Dungeons II on Switch 2, load the expected character and check the progress, inventory and other visible state you rely on.

Nintendo states that “A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use this feature.” A membership therefore is not a prerequisite for this direct console-to-console route.

Verify the character before erasing the old Switch

Verification is the safety checkpoint. A completed transfer screen does not replace checking the game itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Launch Minecraft Dungeons II from the same user profile whose save you transferred.
  • Confirm that the expected character or campaign appears, rather than a newly created starting profile.
  • Check a few meaningful progress markers, such as the latest level, equipment or unlocked content that you recognize.
  • If the game presents more than one save or profile, open the one that matches the original console.
  • Only after those checks should you reset, sell, trade in or otherwise dispose of the old Switch.

If the expected progress is missing, stop. Do not initialize the old console, delete the game’s data or start a replacement character that could make it harder to identify the correct save. Recheck the Nintendo Account and user selection, then repeat the supported transfer process.

Use Switch-to-Switch 2 System Transfer when replacing the whole console

Choose System Transfer during the initial Switch 2 setup when your goal is to move the console as a whole. This is broader than the individual save-data tool: it can move users, settings, software entitlements and supported save data together.

Local System Transfer with both consoles present

  1. Start the Switch 2 initial setup and select the System Transfer option when it is offered.
  2. Keep the original Switch available for the local-communication process and follow the pairing instructions shown on both screens.
  3. Review the users, settings, software entitlements and save data included in the transfer summary.
  4. Pay particular attention to users who are not linked to a Nintendo Account and to games that are not supported by Save Data Cloud Backup.
  5. Read the final warning before confirming. Nintendo says that, during a local transfer, save data supported by Save Data Cloud Backup for Nintendo Account-linked users remains on the original Switch and is copied to Switch 2.
  6. After setup completes, open Minecraft Dungeons II under the correct user and verify the character and progress before resetting the old system.

Nintendo warns that data for users not linked to a Nintendo Account and games not supported by Save Data Cloud Backup can be deleted from the source console after the transfer. The exact consequence is shown in the on-screen summary, so do not approve the operation without reading it.

When full transfer is the wrong choice

If you want to leave other users, settings or software arrangements untouched and only need Minecraft Dungeons II, return to the nearby-console save-data transfer. A full System Transfer creates a wider migration and may alter the source console in ways that are unnecessary for a single game.

Use server transfer if the old Switch will not be with you

Server transfer is intended for a replacement-console workflow when the source Switch can upload its transfer data but will not remain available beside the new console. It is not a casual backup button.

  1. On the original Switch, begin Nintendo’s server-transfer workflow and upload the console data.
  2. Confirm that the destination Switch 2 is the console you intend to use.
  3. Complete the destination-side download and setup before the retention window expires.
  4. After the destination is ready, launch Minecraft Dungeons II and verify the transferred progress.

Nintendo says the source console is initialized after the upload and that the uploaded transfer data is stored for up to one year. Initialization is an irreversible source-console consequence for practical purposes: treat the old system as erased once you confirm the server transfer. Check the destination, Nintendo Account and transfer deadline before starting.

Restore through Save Data Cloud

The official Minecraft Dungeons II Switch 2 product listing marks the game as supporting Save Data Cloud. This gives you a backup-and-download route when the consoles cannot be together, but it has two conditions that nearby transfer does not: the game must be supported for the account, and you need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Back up on the old Switch

  1. Sign in to the Nintendo Account that owns the Minecraft Dungeons II save.
  2. Open the system’s save-data cloud controls and choose Minecraft Dungeons II.
  3. Run the backup and wait for the system to indicate that the upload has completed.

Download on Switch 2

  1. Sign in to the same Nintendo Account on Switch 2 and select the matching user.
  2. Open the save-data cloud controls, choose Minecraft Dungeons II and download the backed-up save.
  3. Start the game and verify the character and progress before making changes.

Cloud backup is especially useful if the old and new consoles are in different places. It is not a reason to assume every game can be restored this way; Nintendo’s product listing and current service rules determine eligibility.

Account, user and ownership checks

The most common avoidable mistake is choosing a similarly named local profile instead of the profile tied to the original save. Save data is associated with the Nintendo Account user and console relationship, not with the physical game card. Before transferring, compare the account-linked user on both systems and use that profile for the send, receive, backup and first launch.

A game card can provide access to the software, but inserting the card into Switch 2 does not bring the old character with it. Likewise, copying downloadable software or using the same microSD card does not replace Nintendo’s save-data procedures. The account match is the identity check that matters.

If a household has several profiles, do not assume that moving one person’s user moves another person’s Minecraft Dungeons II progress. Nearby transfer is selected for a particular save, while System Transfer reviews users and supported data as part of a broader migration. Read the user and save names shown on screen before confirming.

What actually moves with each method

  • The save follows the user and console relationship, not the game card. Owning or inserting the same card does not by itself place the old progress on Switch 2.
  • Nearby transfer can target one game. This is the appropriate scope when Minecraft Dungeons II is the only save you want to move.
  • System Transfer is broader. It can include all users, settings, software entitlements and supported saves included in the setup workflow.
  • Cloud backup is conditional. Minecraft Dungeons II is listed with Save Data Cloud support, but downloading requires the same Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online.
  • microSD copying is not a save migration. Do not use a card copy or a generic cable as a substitute for Nintendo’s transfer tools.

Troubleshoot the common transfer failures

The consoles cannot see each other

Move them closer, confirm that both are connected to the internet and restart the save-data transfer screens. Keep both systems awake and on the relevant send or receive page until pairing succeeds.

The game does not appear in the selection list

Check that Minecraft Dungeons II is installed or otherwise available on the source console, that you selected the user who owns the progress and that the game’s save exists under that profile. A different Nintendo Account on either system will prevent the required match.

The transfer starts but the destination shows new progress

Exit without erasing the old console. On Switch 2, switch to the user linked to the same Nintendo Account as the source save, then inspect the game again. If the expected character is still absent, repeat the supported transfer rather than creating more replacement data.

Cloud download is unavailable

Nearby transfer does not require Nintendo Switch Online, so use it when both consoles are together. For cloud restore, verify the membership, Nintendo Account and game-support status; cloud controls cannot compensate for an unsupported save or mismatched account.

You are about to initialize the old console

Pause and identify which workflow you started. Server transfer initializes the source after upload. Local System Transfer can delete certain source data after confirmation, while the individual save-data route is designed for moving the selected game. Read the warning and verify Minecraft Dungeons II on Switch 2 first whenever the source remains available.

After the transfer: a final safety check

Use the first successful launch as a deliberate audit rather than rushing into a new session. Open the transferred user, enter Minecraft Dungeons II and confirm the character or campaign you recognize. Check a recent level, equipment loadout and unlocked content. These visible markers are more useful than relying only on a system message that says the transfer finished.

Once the save is confirmed, you can decide what to do with the old Switch. If you are keeping it, leave the original data untouched until you are certain the new console is working. If you are selling, trading in or resetting it, complete that step only after checking the destination. This is especially important for server transfer, because Nintendo initializes the source after upload, and for local System Transfer, where the on-screen warning identifies data that may be removed.

A safe decision checklist

  • Need only Minecraft Dungeons II and have both consoles? Use nearby-console save-data transfer.
  • Moving every user, setting and supported save during first-time Switch 2 setup? Use local System Transfer.
  • The old Switch can upload but will not be available beside Switch 2? Consider server transfer, remembering that the source is initialized and the upload is retained for up to one year.
  • Consoles are apart and you have Nintendo Switch Online? Back up and download through Save Data Cloud if the game remains supported.
  • In every case, launch Minecraft Dungeons II and confirm the character and progress before deleting, resetting, selling or trading in the original Switch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I transfer my Minecraft Dungeons II save to Switch 2?

For one game, use Nintendo’s nearby-console save-data transfer. Put both consoles online and close together, choose the send option on the old Switch and the receive option on Switch 2, select Minecraft Dungeons II, and use the same Nintendo Account-linked user on both systems. Launch the game on Switch 2 and verify the character before changing the old console.

Will my Minecraft Dungeons II progress carry over?

Yes, use one of Nintendo’s supported save routes and the same Nintendo Account-linked user. Nearby transfer moves the selected save, while local System Transfer can move supported saves with the broader console migration. Always open Minecraft Dungeons II on Switch 2 and check the expected progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I move just one game save instead of everything?

Yes. Nearby-console save-data transfer is intended for an individual game save, so it is the better choice when Minecraft Dungeons II is the only progress you want to move. A full System Transfer is designed for users, settings, software entitlements and supported saves together.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to transfer the save?

No for nearby-console save-data transfer; Nintendo explicitly says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required. You do need an active membership for the Save Data Cloud backup-and-download route.

What if my old Switch and Switch 2 are in different places?

Use Save Data Cloud if Minecraft Dungeons II is supported for the account and you have Nintendo Switch Online. Back up the save on the old Switch, then download it on Switch 2 with the same Nintendo Account. Server transfer is another replacement-console workflow, but it initializes the source after upload.

Will transferring the save delete it from my old Switch?

The consequences depend on the method. Server transfer initializes the source console after upload. Local System Transfer can remove data identified in its confirmation warning, while supported cloud-backed saves for linked users remain on the old console and are copied. Nearby transfer is the focused option for one selected game. Verify Switch 2 before erasing anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy the save with a microSD card or game card?

No. The save is tied to the Nintendo Account user and console, not the game card. Nintendo’s documented routes are system transfer and Save Data Cloud for supported games; a generic cable or microSD copy is not a substitute.

What should I do if Switch 2 shows a new character?

Do not reset the old Switch or continue creating replacement data. Confirm that Switch 2 is using the user linked to the same Nintendo Account as the original save, then repeat the supported transfer or cloud download. Check the character, level and other recognizable progress before disposing of the source console.

How long is server-transfer data available?

Nintendo says uploaded server-transfer data is stored for up to one year. Confirm the destination and complete the download before that retention period ends, because the source Switch is initialized after upload.

The Bottom Line

For one Minecraft Dungeons II save, use nearby-console transfer with both systems online, close together and linked to the same Nintendo Account; Nintendo Switch Online is not required. Use local System Transfer for a complete console replacement, or Save Data Cloud when the game is supported and you have Nintendo Switch Online. Verify the character on Switch 2 before erasing the original Switch.
