To read a Kindle purchase on a different brand of e-reader, first check whether Amazon offers that specific title as a downloadable EPUB or PDF: most DRM-protected purchases are limited to Kindle apps and devices.
Move your books to a replacement Kindle
Kindle purchases are associated with the Amazon account used to buy them. You do not need to transfer book files manually or buy another Kindle just to read a purchase on a Kindle device you already own. Register the replacement device to the purchasing account, then let its library sync.

- Set up the new Kindle and register it to the Amazon account that owns the books. Amazon setup requires an account and an internet connection.
- Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and wait for the library to sync.
- If a book is missing, open Manage Your Content and Devices, select the book, choose Deliver or Remove from Device, select the registered Kindle, and choose Make Changes. See Amazon’s manual delivery instructions.
- Sync the Kindle again. Amazon’s sync guide says syncing can download pending books and supported notes and highlights, and back up the furthest page read. Text annotations sync across Kindle surfaces; handwritten annotations are currently limited to Kindle Scribe devices.
Can you transfer a Kindle book to Kobo or another e-reader?
Usually not as a simple file copy. Amazon says DRM-protected Kindle books are restricted to Kindle apps and devices. As its Digital Rights Management guidance puts it, “Applying DRM limits reader access to Kindle apps and devices only.” Do not assume a Kindle purchase can be copied to a Kobo or another non-Kindle reader.

Effective January 20, 2026, verified purchasers can download EPUB or PDF files for confirmed DRM-free titles when the publisher has enabled downloads. This is title-specific, and borrowed books—including Kindle Unlimited loans—are not eligible, even if they are DRM-free.

- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
- In Manage Your Content and Devices, open the title’s options and check whether an EPUB or PDF download is offered.
- If Amazon offers a file, download it and follow the destination e-reader’s instructions to import that format. Confirm that the specific model supports EPUB or PDF; support varies, and Amazon’s guidance does not establish compatibility for every third-party reader.
- If there is no download option, the book is not available through this official cross-reader path. Do not treat Send to Kindle as a way around DRM or try to remove the book’s protection.
Kindle purchases, personal documents, and what carries over
A personal document you own is a different case from a purchased Kindle book. Amazon recommends its Send to Kindle service for sending personal files such as EPUB and PDF to a Kindle. Amazon states a limit of 200 MB per file for this personal-file transfer. That limit does not make a DRM-protected Kindle purchase transferable.
| What you are moving | What is required | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle purchase to a new Kindle | Register the device to the purchasing Amazon account; connect to the internet. | Access the book through the account. Kindle sync can restore reading position and supported notes and highlights. |
| Kindle purchase to a non-Kindle reader | An eligible confirmed DRM-free purchase with an EPUB/PDF download enabled; borrowed books are excluded. | Import the downloaded file if the destination model supports its format. Transfer of Kindle sync data to that reader is not established. |
| Personal document to a Kindle | Use Send to Kindle or a supported USB method; file type, size, device, and computer operating system can affect the process. | The personal document can appear on the Kindle. This does not alter DRM on purchased books. |
USB steps depend on the Kindle generation and computer. Amazon’s transfer help says Kindle Scribe and Kindle devices released in 2024 require a separate application for USB transfers on Mac; Windows users can connect the Kindle as external storage. Check Amazon’s instructions for the specific device and operating system before transferring by cable.
