Steam-mop guidance by floor type
| Floor type | What the cited manufacturer guidance says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Hardwood | Shark says its steam mops can be used on sealed hardwood, but not unsealed or unfinished wood. | Confirm the floor is sealed and its manufacturer permits steam. Test a discreet area first. |
| Laminate | Pergo permits steam cleaning for the products covered by its instructions, with specific precautions. Shark also describes sealed laminate as suitable for its steam mops. | Follow the exact floor and appliance instructions; laminate permissions and procedures are product-specific. |
| Vinyl | BISSELL Australia lists sealed vinyl among hard floors suitable for its steam mops when used as directed. | That guidance does not establish that every vinyl floor tolerates every steam mop. Check both manufacturers’ instructions. |
These are manufacturer-specific recommendations, not independent comparative tests or a universal guarantee that steam is safe for every floor in a category. Shark’s floor-use guidance, BISSELL Australia’s FAQs, and Pergo’s laminate maintenance instructions describe the conditions and products they cover.

When can you use a steam mop on hardwood?
Only consider it when the hardwood is sealed, the flooring maker allows steam, and the mop maker lists that floor as suitable. Shark advises against steaming unsealed or unfinished wood because heat and moisture can damage it. The sealed condition matters: if you do not know whether the finish is intact, do not assume the floor is protected.

Shark also cautions that heat or steam may remove sheen from wax-treated surfaces and some no-wax floors. Test an inconspicuous spot and check the flooring maker’s care guidance before treating the whole floor. A spot test can reveal a problem, but it does not override a manufacturer’s prohibition.

Why laminate needs product-specific instructions
Do not assume that all laminate can be steam-mopped. Pergo’s instructions allow steam for the specified laminate products only when the procedure is followed: cover the steam openings with an appropriate cloth, select low power, keep the mop moving along the plank length, and remove remaining moisture after cleaning. Do not hold the mop in one place.
Those directions apply to the Pergo products addressed in its document; they are not a general permission for other laminate brands. Follow your own flooring maker’s care guide and the appliance manual. Water-resistance or warranty terms for particular products do not establish a steam-cleaning rule for other floors.

What about vinyl floors?
BISSELL Australia says its steam mops and steam cleaners, when used as directed, are suitable for sealed hard floors including vinyl. Treat that as guidance for the products and conditions it covers, not proof that all vinyl flooring is compatible with all steam mops. Check the flooring instructions for your exact product and the manual for your appliance before using steam.
How to decide safely
- Identify the exact floor. Find its product name or care guide, and establish whether the surface is sealed where that matters.
- Check both sets of instructions. Read the flooring maker’s care guidance and the steam-mop manual. Shark recommends checking the floor manufacturer’s use-and-care instructions.
- Resolve conflicts conservatively. If either maker says not to use steam, follow that instruction. If the guidance is silent, unclear, or the sealed condition is uncertain, contact the flooring maker or choose a non-steam method.
- Follow any permitted-use conditions exactly. Use only the approved setting, pad or cloth, and movement pattern. Keep the mop moving and remove moisture promptly where the instructions require it.
- Test discreetly first. Check for changes to the finish or sheen in an inconspicuous area before cleaning a larger surface.
If steam is not approved
Use a floor-maker-approved cleaner or a compatible microfiber mop instead. A low setting or a cloth does not make steam safe when the flooring instructions prohibit it.
