Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConnect the Seagate One Touch Portable to your computer, open its drive in Finder on Mac or File Explorer on Windows, and copy or drag files into it. The drive comes formatted as exFAT for use with both platforms, and you do not need Seagate Toolkit for a basic file transfer. Eject the drive in your operating system before unplugging it.
Connect the drive and open it
- Choose the right cable. The One Touch Portable model covered by Seagate’s manual includes a USB-C-to-USB-C cable. If your computer has only USB-A ports, you need a USB-C-to-USB-A cable that supports USB 3.0 or higher; Seagate says that cable is not included with this model. Check Seagate’s One Touch Portable welcome page if your model or supplied cable differs.
- Connect the drive. Seat both ends of the cable firmly and connect the drive to the computer. If possible, use a direct computer port rather than a hub, especially if the drive is not detected reliably.
- Find the drive volume. On a Mac, open Finder and select the drive in the sidebar. On Windows, open File Explorer and select the drive. Seagate’s getting-started instructions use these file managers to access the drive.
Copy files to the drive
- In Finder or File Explorer, locate the files or folders you want to transfer.
- Copy and paste them into the One Touch Portable volume, or drag them into its window. You can organize the destination with folders just as you would on another storage volume.
- Wait for the copy operation to finish. Keep the originals on the computer until the transfer completes and you can see the copied files on the drive.
- Eject the drive using your operating system’s normal eject control before disconnecting the cable. The exact menu or control varies by operating-system version.
This manual copy-and-paste workflow does not require Toolkit. Seagate Toolkit is optional software for supported backup and mirror features.

Understand the drive’s format before changing it
Seagate says the One Touch Portable is preformatted as exFAT for compatibility with Windows and Mac computers. That makes exFAT a practical choice when you need to move files between the two platforms. See Seagate’s optional formatting guidance for details.
There is an important trade-off: exFAT is not compatible with Windows File History or macOS Time Machine. If you want to use one of those built-in backup utilities, you may need a file system supported by that utility. Formatting erases the data already on the drive, so copy any files you want to keep somewhere else before reformatting.

Use Toolkit only if you want its backup or mirror features
Toolkit is separate from copying files manually. Seagate describes a Windows backup plan and a mirror folder for Windows or Mac. A mirror synchronizes additions, edits, and deletions between paired folders; it is not simply a one-time copy. Check Seagate’s Toolkit feature instructions and Toolkit compatibility information before installing or relying on a particular feature, since compatibility may change.

The drive does not appear
- Check that both cable ends are fully seated, then try another supported direct port on the computer.
- If your computer has only USB-A ports, use a USB-C-to-USB-A cable that supports USB 3.0 or higher.
- If you are using a hub and the drive is missing or disconnecting, connect it directly to the computer to see whether the hub is the cause.
- For additional model-specific steps, consult Seagate’s One Touch Portable FAQ.
Transfers seem slow
Seagate says performance improves when the drive is connected to a USB 3.0-or-higher port; a USB 2.0 connection operates at USB 2.0 transfer rates. Actual transfer time varies with the port, connection, files, and computer, so a particular speed or completion time cannot be assumed.

A filename triggers an error
Seagate’s filename-character warning concerns FAT32 volumes and identifies characters such as ?, <, >, /, and as problematic during copying. Since this drive is normally formatted as exFAT, check the drive’s actual format before treating a FAT32 filename restriction as the cause.
