Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a broad move to a new MacBook, use Apple’s Migration Assistant; to copy only a few folders, use an external drive or file sharing. Migration Assistant copies selected data without deleting it from the Windows laptop, but it is not a complete clone of Windows. The steps below cover both options and explain where migrated files appear.
Choose a transfer method
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Migration Assistant | Moving a range of account data and files to a new Mac | Apple’s guided transfer lets you select what to copy. It does not delete information from the PC or replace macOS. Apple’s Migration Assistant guide |
| External storage | Copying selected folders or recovering important files if migration has trouble | Use a portable external SSD or USB flash drive. Choose one with enough capacity and connectors that work with both computers; compatibility depends on the specific drive and setup. |
| File sharing | Moving selected files when both computers can use a network | Apple identifies file sharing as an option, but the linked Apple guides do not provide a complete Windows sharing setup. You may need to configure sharing separately. |
If you want the broader account migration, start with Migration Assistant. If you only need documents, photos, or a few folders, copying them selectively can be simpler.

Transfer from Windows with Migration Assistant
1. Prepare both computers
- Install available Windows and macOS updates, and quit open apps.
- Temporarily turn off antivirus, firewall, or VPN software if Apple’s connection troubleshooting requires it. Do not leave security protection disabled after the transfer.
- Keep the computers near each other and enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. If the Mac runs macOS 13 or earlier, or you are unsure about the connection requirements, connect both to the same network or connect them directly with Ethernet. Apple describes wired and wireless network transfer in its Mac user guide.
2. Install the Windows assistant that matches macOS
Download Windows Migration Assistant using Apple’s live compatibility table. The version must match the macOS release on the destination Mac; the table can change, so check it before downloading rather than relying on an older version number. Apple currently lists pairings including version 3.2.0.0 for Windows 10 or later to macOS 14–27, version 2.4.5.0 for Windows 7 or later to macOS 12–13, and version 2.3.1.0 for Windows 7 or later to macOS 11. These are compatibility pairings, not performance or transfer-time estimates. Check Apple’s current version table.
3. Start the transfer on the Mac
- During the Mac’s initial setup, choose the option to transfer information from a Windows PC. If setup is already complete, open Migration Assistant on the Mac and choose the same option.
- Open Windows Migration Assistant on the laptop and follow its prompts.
- When a code appears on the Mac, enter it in Windows Migration Assistant, then continue.
4. Select what to copy and wait
Allow the Mac to scan the Windows laptop and calculate the information available to transfer. Select the categories or individual items you want, then continue. Apple says a large transfer may take hours and can appear to pause occasionally; avoid interrupting it just because progress seems slow.

5. Sign in and check the results
When Migration Assistant finishes, review the transferred account and files on the Mac. A migrated standard account uses a temporary password displayed onscreen; use it for the first sign-in, then set a new password. For an administrator account, set a secure password during migration. If you need data from more than one Windows user account, sign into each account on the PC and repeat the migration.
Where migrated Windows data appears
Migration Assistant places different kinds of information in corresponding Mac apps or folders. The exact items available depend on what is present on the Windows laptop and the migration selection.

Because the transfer places data in Mac apps and folders rather than reproducing the Windows installation, check the destinations you need instead of expecting the Mac to look exactly like the PC. Apple’s Mac migration guide describes the transfer and destinations.
Copy selected files with external storage
For a selective transfer, copy the folders you need from the Windows laptop to an external storage device, safely eject it from Windows, connect it to the MacBook, and copy the files to the desired Mac folder. Apple recommends external storage as an alternative for important files. The cited Apple instructions do not specify a particular drive, capacity, transfer rate, file system, or connector, so check the chosen drive’s compatibility with both computers before relying on it.

Troubleshoot a Migration Assistant transfer
- The computers do not connect: Confirm both systems are updated, the correct Windows Migration Assistant release is installed, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled, and the computers are on the same network or connected by Ethernet when required.
- The transfer fails or stalls: Large transfers can take hours and may seem to pause. If the problem persists, check the Windows disk with Apple’s recommended
chkdskutility. - Windows disk errors are reported: Apple documents the repair command
chkdsk drive: /F. Replacedrive:with the affected drive letter, then follow Windows prompts. Back up important data before attempting disk repairs. - You still cannot migrate: Copy essential files using external storage or file sharing rather than repeatedly attempting an unsuccessful full migration. Apple’s troubleshooting steps are in its Migration Assistant guide.
