To secure an online bank account, start from the bank’s official app or a saved bookmark, turn on its strongest available sign-in protection, enable useful account alerts, and review transactions regularly. Use a passkey or other phishing-resistant WebAuthn method if your bank supports one; otherwise choose the strongest multifactor authentication (MFA) option it offers. Features and menu names vary by institution.
Secure your bank account in four steps
- Open a trusted bank channel. Use the bank’s official app, a saved bookmark, or the website or phone number printed on your statement or payment card. Do not follow a link or call a number in an unexpected message that asks you to verify account details. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises contacting the institution using details obtained independently of the message (CFPB guidance, reviewed April 15, 2024).
- Enable the strongest sign-in method available. In the bank’s security or sign-in settings, look for passkeys, security keys, two-factor authentication, two-step verification, or multifactor authentication. If the bank offers a phishing-resistant WebAuthn method, prefer it. If it does not, select its strongest supported alternative.
- Turn on relevant account alerts. Enable notifications for large charges or payments, low balances, overdrafts, and deposits when those events and settings are available. Choose a delivery method offered by the bank and set thresholds that make sense for your account.
- Review activity and act on anything unfamiliar. Check balances and transactions regularly. If you spot a transaction you do not recognize, contact the bank promptly through its official app, website, or independently obtained support number.
Choose an authentication method your bank supports
Multifactor authentication requires another proof of identity in addition to a password. That extra factor can make a stolen password less useful to an attacker, but methods differ in how well they resist phishing and how easy they are to recover if a device is lost. Not every bank offers passkeys, WebAuthn, or hardware security keys; the available choices and recovery process depend on the institution.

Passkeys and other WebAuthn methods
If your bank offers a passkey or another phishing-resistant WebAuthn sign-in option, use it if it works with the devices you rely on and you understand how account recovery works. The CFPB emphasizes phishing-resistant MFA: “MFA solutions that protect against credential phishing, such as those using the Web Authentication standard supported by web browsers, are especially important.” (CFPB Circular 2022-04, 2022.) The sources cited here do not establish which banks currently offer passkeys, so check your own bank’s sign-in settings or official help pages.

If passkeys or another phishing-resistant method are not available, an authenticator app or security key is generally a better choice than a code sent by text or email when your bank supports it. The FTC describes a security key as a physical second-factor device, including USB and NFC examples, and calls it the strongest two-factor method in its consumer guidance. A key is optional: check that your bank accepts it before buying one (FTC, “Use Two-Factor Authentication To Protect Your Accounts,” September 2022).

- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Text and email codes
If a code by text or email is the only second factor your bank offers, enabling it is still better than leaving the account with no second factor. Never tell a caller or message sender a verification code, even if they claim to be bank staff. The FTC warns, “Anyone who asks you for your account verification code is a scammer” (FTC, March 7, 2024).
Protect the password and plan for recovery
Use a bank password you do not reuse on other sites. When comparing available methods, consider whether they resist phishing, which devices you can use them on, and how you will regain access if a phone or key is lost. FTC guidance recommends starting with sensitive accounts such as banks, credit cards, email, and payment apps (FTC guidance).

Set alerts that help you notice activity
In the bank’s app or website, look for alerts or notifications in account, profile, or security settings. CFPB consumer guidance identifies large charges or payments, low balances, overdrafts, and deposits as useful alert categories. Exact labels, thresholds, and delivery channels differ by institution; text and email are examples, not universal options (CFPB, “Online and mobile banking tips for beginners”).
Recommended Free Tools
Choose a threshold that would make a notification meaningful—for example, a large-payment threshold suited to your normal spending. Consider whether a notification on a lock screen or shared device might reveal sensitive information, and adjust the device’s notification privacy settings if needed. Alerts can help you stay informed without logging in several times a day, but they do not replace reviewing balances and transactions. CFPB notes that checking balances online may help consumers spot errors earlier than waiting for a paper statement.

Recognize and respond to suspicious messages
A message saying your bank account needs verification may be an attempt to collect your login or personal details. Do not click its link, reply with information, or call a number supplied in the message. Instead, open the official bank app or use contact details from a statement or payment card. CFPB gives this advice for unexpected verification requests (CFPB guidance, reviewed April 15, 2024).
Apply the same caution to verification codes: do not read one aloud or forward it to someone who contacts you. If a transaction appears unauthorized or incorrect, use the bank’s official support channel promptly to report it. Account alerts may bring activity to your attention, but you should verify it by signing in through a trusted route rather than interacting with a message.

- Enable relevant alerts for large charges or payments, low balances, overdrafts, and deposits.
- Review transactions regularly and promptly report activity you do not recognize.
This is general U.S. consumer guidance, not a bank-specific setup. Your bank determines which sign-in methods, alerts, thresholds, delivery channels, and account-recovery options are available.
