For a dependable reinstall, save the game’s actual offline installer when the publisher provides one, keep saves separately, and test the backup before you need it. A copied folder or storefront backup is not automatically a standalone installer—and “DRM-free” does not mean every feature works offline. Check the requirements for the specific game before relying on it.
What DRM-free does—and does not—mean
GOG’s policy says its games should work without Galaxy authentication, without the Galaxy client, and without an internet connection, except for features that inherently rely on online services, such as multiplayer or leaderboards. GOG’s developer documentation summarizes its standard this way: “DRM-free is a MUST, copy protection is a NO.” It describes games shipping without technical restrictions on installation, copying, or activation. That policy is not proof that every title on every store is DRM-free, nor does it make connected features available offline. A game may still use a launcher, require online activation, or depend on online services. Check the exact game’s store listing and publisher support information, especially if you bought it from a storefront other than GOG.

The most useful backup depends on how the game is distributed. A standalone offline installer is designed to install the game without fetching its files from the storefront. By contrast, an installed game folder or a storefront’s backup tool may preserve files while still relying on the original client, a third-party launcher, or a later update.

Back up a GOG game’s offline installer
- Open the game’s entry in your GOG library and locate its offline installer files. Interface wording can change, so use the current library page rather than relying on a fixed menu label.
- Download every installer part required for the game. Keep the parts together in one clearly named folder, and include any extras you want to preserve, such as soundtracks or bonus materials.
- Copy that folder to storage separate from your PC. If the library matters to you, keep a second copy on another storage device or location; one copy can be lost along with the computer it is stored on.
- Verify the backup by installing the game from the saved files. GOG’s developer documentation notes that offline installers are generated after builds are published and that an updated build may take several hours to produce an installer. If a newly published update is not yet available as an installer, check again later. See GOG’s offline-installer documentation.
Back up a Steam game without assuming it is standalone
Steam’s backup and restore feature can preserve supported Steam-installed games, but its compatibility is limited to games fully downloaded, installed, and patched through Steam. A title that uses a third-party installer or downloader may not be supported by the feature. Consult Steam’s current instructions for the backup and restore steps.
Treat the resulting backup as a way to restore game files, not as proof that Steam, a publisher launcher, or online activation will no longer be required. Steam also notes that a game may require updates before it can launch in Offline Mode. Update and test the specific title while you still have internet access; do not assume a copied folder or Offline Mode will work for every game. See Steam’s Offline Mode guidance.

Check for third-party launchers and online requirements
A backup does not remove dependencies built into a game’s distribution or publisher services. Electronic Arts says some Steam games require the EA app, and some Ubisoft games require Ubisoft Connect. EA’s offline mode also has conditions: its guidance says it works for 30 days since the last online launch, a product rule that may change. Check the current requirements for your title before planning to play it offline. - Launcher: Does the game need Steam, the EA app, Ubisoft Connect, or another client to install or launch?
- Activation: Does the publisher require an initial online activation or periodic account check?
- Connected features: Multiplayer, leaderboards, achievements, and cloud saves may need a connection even when single-player play does not.
- Updates: Could the game require an update before launching offline?
Preserve saves separately and test a restore
Game installations and save files are separate preservation problems. Save locations vary by title, and no single location applies to every game. Consult the game’s support page or ask its developer for the save-file path, then back up those files separately from the installer or game backup. If you use cloud saves, do not treat cloud synchronization as your only copy.

Before depending on a backup, restore or install the game from the saved files on a suitable system and test the launch conditions you care about. A successful install confirms that the files can be used for installation; it does not by itself prove that account authentication, a launcher, or online-only features are unnecessary.
