How to Transfer Everything to a New iPhone Pro or Pro Max

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

The safest way to move everything to a new iPhone Pro or iPhone Pro Max is Quick Start when your old iPhone still works. Keep both phones together, use either a direct device-to-device transfer or an iCloud download, and leave them connected to power until migration finishes. If the old phone is missing or unusable, restore an iCloud or encrypted computer backup instead.

Do not erase the old iPhone until you have checked photos, messages, contacts, notes, passwords, authenticator and banking apps, Health data, Apple Pay, cellular service, and Apple Watch activity.

Choose the right transfer method

Your best option depends on whether the old iPhone is available and whether your reliable copy is in iCloud or on a computer.

Method Use it when What to expect
Quick Start: Transfer Directly from iPhone The old iPhone works and both devices can remain together and powered. Data moves from the old phone to the new one. You cannot use either phone for normal setup until the transfer completes.
Quick Start: Download from iCloud You want to start using the new iPhone sooner while content continues downloading. The new phone becomes usable first; apps and data download in the background.
Restore from iCloud Backup The old iPhone is unavailable but a usable backup exists. The new iPhone restores the selected backup over Wi-Fi and continues downloading content.
Restore from Mac or PC You have a current local backup and access to the computer that created it. Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes restores the dated backup. Encryption is required for Health and Activity data.
Wired transfer Your iPhone models and cable support a direct connection. Connect the phones with a compatible cable or adapter and select the transfer option offered during setup.

Apple’s transfer-method overview describes these routes. Apple does not publish a universal completion time: the amount of data and network or connection conditions determine how long a migration takes.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Prepare both iPhones before setup

Update the old iPhone and make a fresh backup

  1. Install the latest iOS update available for the old iPhone.
  2. Create a fresh iCloud backup, or make an encrypted backup on a Mac or PC. An encrypted computer backup is essential if you need Health and Activity data preserved.
  3. Confirm that you know the Apple Account password used on the old phone. You may need it during activation and restoration.
  4. Keep the old iPhone until every post-transfer check passes. A backup is a safety net, not a substitute for verifying the new phone.

Set up the environment

  • Charge both phones and have their power adapters available. Migration can take longer with a large photo or video library.
  • For Quick Start, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the old iPhone and place the phones close together.
  • Remove any case or accessory that prevents the phones from sitting close together or connecting to a cable securely.
  • If cellular service will move by eSIM, keep the old phone active until the new line has made a call and used mobile data successfully.

Use Quick Start for a direct iPhone-to-iPhone transfer

Quick Start is the preferred route when the old iPhone is in your possession. Apple’s current instructions are at Quick Start.

  1. Turn on the new iPhone Pro or Pro Max and place it beside the old iPhone.
  2. Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on the old iPhone. An animation appears on the new phone.
  3. Use the old iPhone to scan the animation, then enter the old iPhone’s passcode on the new phone when prompted.
  4. Sign in with your Apple Account if setup requests it.
  5. At the transfer choice, select Transfer Directly from iPhone when you want the new phone to receive the data directly from the old one.
  6. Keep both iPhones near each other and plugged into power. Do not restart, separate, or erase either phone while the migration is running.
  7. Wait for setup to report completion, then continue through the remaining activation screens.

Apple states: “If you transfer directly from your previous device, you’ll need to wait for the transfer to complete on both devices before you can use them.” The actual duration varies with the amount of data and connection conditions, so a large library should be allowed uninterrupted time.

Use Quick Start’s iCloud download when you need the new phone sooner

Quick Start can configure the new iPhone from iCloud rather than keeping the two phones occupied for a full direct copy. After the phones recognize each other and you reach the transfer choice, select Download from iCloud.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Complete the Quick Start pairing, animation scan, and passcode prompts.
  2. Choose Download from iCloud instead of Transfer Directly from iPhone.
  3. Stay connected to Wi-Fi and power while apps, photos, and other content continue downloading.
  4. Use the new iPhone as setup allows, but postpone judging the migration complete until the background downloads finish and your checks are done.

Apple’s wording is specific: “If you download from iCloud, your apps and data download in the background so that you can start using your new device right away.” This option is useful when the old phone must remain available but you cannot wait for a device-to-device copy before starting work.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Restore from iCloud when the old iPhone is unavailable

If the old iPhone is lost, damaged, traded in, or otherwise unavailable, you can still migrate from an existing backup. Your new iPhone must be able to reach the backup over Wi-Fi.

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and proceed until the Apps & Data screen.
  2. Tap Restore from iCloud Backup.
  3. Sign in with the Apple Account that owns the backup.
  4. Review the available backups and select the one with the correct date and size. The newest backup is not automatically the right one if it was made before important data finished syncing.
  5. Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while restoration runs and content continues downloading.

Apple’s iCloud migration instructions cover this flow. If no suitable backup is listed, do not erase the old phone or cancel another recovery route until you have confirmed which Apple Account and backup date you need.

Restore an encrypted Mac or PC backup

A local backup is valuable when internet access is limited or when you deliberately keep a computer copy. Use the same computer that made the backup whenever possible.

  1. On the new iPhone’s Apps & Data screen, select Restore from Mac or PC.
  2. Connect the new iPhone to the computer containing the backup.
  3. Open Finder on a Mac, or Apple Devices or iTunes on a PC, depending on the software installed.
  4. Choose Restore Backup and select the correctly dated backup.
  5. Enter the backup password if the copy is encrypted, then leave the iPhone connected until the restore finishes.

Use an encrypted backup for a complete personal-data migration. Apple warns: “If your backup isn’t encrypted, your Health and Activity data from your iOS device or Apple Watch won’t transfer.” The computer-backup restoration guide provides Apple’s current steps.

Transfer with a cable when the phones support it

A wired transfer is an alternative to wireless Quick Start when you have compatible models and a suitable cable. Check the connector on each phone before beginning: the two ends may both be USB-C, both be Lightning, or require a USB-C-to-Lightning cable or an appropriate adapter.

  1. Update and back up the old iPhone first, as described above.
  2. Connect the old and new iPhones with the cable and adapter combination supported by both devices.
  3. Turn on the new iPhone and follow setup until the transfer choice appears.
  4. Select the wired or direct-transfer option shown on screen, approve any trust or passcode prompts, and keep the cable connected until setup reports completion.

A cable can avoid wireless interference, but it does not remove the need for a backup or for post-transfer verification. If the phones use different connector generations, forcing an incompatible cable or loose adapter can interrupt the copy.

Move your cellular plan and eSIM

Cellular migration is a separate checkpoint from copying apps and files. During iPhone setup, accept the eSIM transfer prompt if your carrier supports Apple’s eSIM Quick Transfer.

Requirements for eSIM Quick Transfer

Apple lists all of these prerequisites in its eSIM setup instructions:

  • Both iPhones are signed in to the same Apple Account.
  • The phones are near each other with Bluetooth turned on.
  • Both phones run iOS 18.4 or later.

When the prompt appears, follow the on-screen approval steps. The cellular plan may deactivate on the old iPhone as it activates on the new one, so test a call and mobile data before disposing of or erasing the old device.

If the transfer prompt is missing

A missing prompt does not prove the iPhone is faulty. Carrier support, country, plan type, and account status determine whether Quick Transfer is offered. Use the carrier’s activation process instead: a carrier-provided QR code or the carrier’s official app. Keep the old SIM or eSIM active until the alternative activation succeeds.

Move Apple Watch, Health, and Activity data

Apple Watch migration needs its own preparation because Watch pairing and Health records depend on the backup type. Apple documents the process at Apple Watch pairing and transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update the Apple Watch and the old iPhone before starting.
  2. Back up the old iPhone. Confirm that Health is included in iCloud, or use an encrypted computer backup.
  3. Begin setting up the new iPhone and accept the Apple Watch transfer prompt when it appears.
  4. Keep the Watch and new iPhone at least 50 percent charged during the process.
  5. After pairing, open the Watch app and confirm recent activity, workouts, and settings are present.

If no transfer prompt appears, open the Watch app on the new iPhone and pair the Watch manually. Do not erase the old iPhone until the manual pairing and Health checks are complete.

What to verify before erasing the old iPhone

Use a deliberate checklist rather than assuming that a completed setup screen means every account and service is ready.

  • Photos and videos: Open recent, older, and edited items; check that albums and important shared content are available.
  • Messages: Confirm recent conversations, attachments, and message history.
  • Contacts and calendars: Search for several entries and check that accounts are syncing.
  • Notes and files: Open important notes and documents, including items stored in third-party accounts.
  • Passwords: Confirm that saved passwords and passkeys needed for daily sign-ins are accessible.
  • Authenticator apps: Open each authenticator and verify that codes or account-transfer records are present before signing out of the old phone.
  • Banking and other security-sensitive apps: Launch them and complete any sign-in or device-verification step they require.
  • Health and Activity: Check recent measurements, workouts, trends, and Apple Watch activity.
  • Apple Pay: Open Wallet and verify that the cards you need are present and usable.
  • Cellular: Place a call, receive a call, send a text, and test mobile data with Wi-Fi temporarily off.
  • Apple Watch: Confirm that the Watch is paired, notifications work, and recent activity is visible.

Keep the old iPhone powered on and available until this list passes. Only then should you erase it or hand it to someone else.

Troubleshooting transfer problems

Quick Start does not appear

  • Confirm the old iPhone has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled and is close to the new iPhone.
  • Restart both phones, install available updates, and try setup again.
  • Use an iCloud or computer restore if the old phone cannot remain connected or if Quick Start repeatedly fails.
  • Check device-management restrictions. Apple says: “If your new device is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business, you can’t use Quick Start to transfer data from your current device.” In that case, follow the organization’s enrollment and restore procedure.

The transfer seems stuck

Leave both devices near each other and connected to power. Interrupting a direct transfer can require starting setup again. If the issue persists, restore the newest usable iCloud backup or an encrypted computer backup rather than repeatedly retrying an unstable direct copy.

Health or Watch data is missing

Check whether the source backup was encrypted. An unencrypted computer backup does not carry Health and Activity data. For iCloud, verify that Health was included in iCloud before the backup was made; otherwise create a new backup from the old iPhone if it is still available and repeat the restore.

There is no usable iCloud backup

Check that you signed in with the Apple Account used on the old iPhone and compare backup dates and sizes. If the old phone still works, return to it, make a fresh backup, and restart setup on the new iPhone. If it does not, use the local computer backup route if one exists.

eSIM activation fails

Verify the Apple Account, Bluetooth, proximity, and iOS 18.4-or-later requirements. If they are satisfied but the prompt remains unavailable, use the carrier’s QR-code or app-based activation and contact the carrier for plan-specific restrictions.

Apple Watch will not transfer

Update both the Watch and old iPhone, charge the Watch and new iPhone to at least 50 percent, and confirm that the source backup contains Health data. If the automatic prompt still does not show, pair from the Watch app on the new iPhone manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recommended order for a clean migration

  1. Update the old iPhone and Watch.
  2. Make a fresh iCloud backup or encrypted computer backup.
  3. Keep the Apple Account password, chargers, and any required cable available.
  4. Run Quick Start direct transfer if both phones are available; choose the iCloud download option when early use matters more than waiting for a direct copy.
  5. Restore from iCloud or an encrypted computer backup when the old phone is unavailable.
  6. Activate the eSIM and test calls and data.
  7. Transfer or manually pair the Apple Watch and check Health and Activity.
  8. Complete the verification checklist, then erase the old iPhone.
