You can move data to an iPad mini 7 with Quick Start, restore an iCloud backup, or restore a backup stored on a Mac or Windows PC. Quick Start is convenient when your old iPad is nearby; an iCloud restore works when you have a usable backup, even if the old iPad is unavailable; a computer restore is an option when your backup is on that computer. Choose before setup if possible: Apple’s backup-restore process requires the mini to be new or erased.
Before you start
Have the old iPad or its backup available, and make sure you can sign in to your Apple Account. Apple recommends having a backup and your Apple Account password ready. If you plan to use Quick Start, connect the old iPad to Wi-Fi and turn on Bluetooth. For any route, connect the iPad mini 7 to power while it restores or transfers data.

- Old iPad available and ready: Quick Start can transfer directly between the devices or use an iCloud backup.
- Backup already in iCloud: Restore from that backup during setup.
- Backup on a computer: You will need the Mac or PC that holds it and a USB connection to the iPad mini 7.
Apple’s general iPad setup and transfer instructions cover these methods; they do not prescribe a separate migration procedure specifically for iPad mini 7. For computer restores, use a USB cable compatible with the ports on your iPad and computer; Apple’s cited instructions do not identify a particular cable or connector for this setup. Choose the transfer method that fits

Apple does not give a universal completion time: transfer duration varies with network conditions and the amount of data. Its Quick Start instructions distinguish a direct transfer, during which both devices wait, from downloading from iCloud, where apps and data can continue in the background.

Use Quick Start with your old iPad
- Turn on the iPad mini 7 and place it near the old iPad. Make sure the old iPad is connected to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is on.
- Follow the on-screen setup instructions on both devices and choose how to move your data when prompted.
- For a direct device-to-device transfer, keep the iPads close together and plugged into power until migration completes.
- If you choose to download from iCloud, follow the prompts to select the appropriate backup. Apps and data can download in the background after setup.
Quick Start occupies the devices during setup and transfer. Apple says transfer times vary based on network conditions and the amount of data, so do not rely on a fixed time estimate. Details are in Apple’s Quick Start guide.
Restore the iPad mini 7 from an iCloud backup
Use this route if the old iPad is unavailable or you have already made an iCloud backup you want to use. Start during the iPad mini’s setup. Connect to Wi-Fi, proceed through setup to the Apps & Data stage, and choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup. Sign in with the Apple Account associated with the backup, then select the backup you want. Check its date and size before continuing so you choose the intended copy.

Leave the iPad mini connected to Wi-Fi and power while the restore and subsequent downloads continue. Backup contents and separately synced content can vary, so an iCloud restore does not necessarily mean every item is delivered in the same way. When there is not enough iCloud storage
Apple says eligible new-iPad purchases may qualify for temporary iCloud storage at no charge for up to three weeks when the account does not have enough space to back up the previous device. This is not a universal entitlement for every buyer. Check the offer and eligibility shown during setup or in Apple’s iPad setup instructions.

Restore a computer backup with Finder or iTunes
- On the Mac or Windows PC that contains the backup, open Finder if it runs macOS 10.15 or later. On earlier macOS versions or Windows, open iTunes.
- Connect the new or erased iPad mini 7 to that computer using a compatible USB cable, then select the iPad in Finder or iTunes.
- Choose the option to restore a backup and select the intended backup. If it is encrypted, enter the backup password when asked.
- Keep the iPad connected while the restore proceeds and follow any on-screen setup prompts.
Apple’s instructions require the computer holding the backup and a USB connection to the iPad. They do not specify which cable connector combination applies to every iPad mini 7 and computer, so check the ports on both devices. For backup details, see Apple’s Back up iPad and restore instructions.

Apple’s documented restore-from-backup flow requires the iPad to be new or newly erased. Erasing removes the iPad’s contents, so do not proceed unless you have preserved anything on the mini that you need and intend to erase it. If you decide to continue, the path Apple gives for newer operating systems is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings. After erasure, start setup again and use the iCloud or computer restore steps above. See Apple’s restore guidance.

If a transfer seems slow or interrupted
- For Quick Start direct transfer, keep the iPads close together and plugged into power until completion.
- For an iCloud restore or background download, leave the mini on Wi-Fi and power so downloads can continue.
- Allow time to vary: Apple identifies network conditions and the amount of data as factors, but gives no universal duration.
- For a computer restore, confirm you are using the computer that contains the selected backup, the USB connection is working, and—if the backup is encrypted—you have its password.
