You can transfer directly from the old Android phone by cable or wirelessly, or restore from a Google Account backup if the old phone is unavailable. Sony’s Xperia Transfer 2 app is discontinued; Sony recommends Android’s built-in transfer functions instead.
Before you start
- Charge both phones and connect them to Wi-Fi.
- Make sure you can unlock and use the old phone if you plan to transfer directly.
- Have a Google Account ready if you may restore a backup.
- For a wired transfer, check that you have a data cable that fits both phones; you may need an adapter. A USB-C to USB-C data cable is suitable only if both devices have USB-C ports.
Transfer data directly during Xperia setup
- Turn on the Xperia and begin its initial setup.
- When prompted to copy apps and data, choose the option for an Android device.
- Select the wired or wireless method offered on screen. For a cable connection, connect the phones using a suitable cable and adapter. For wireless transfer, follow the pairing instructions on both devices.
- Choose the data available to copy, then leave both phones connected and follow the prompts until the transfer finishes. Google says this can take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how much data is being copied.
- On the Xperia, check your important contacts, messages, photos, downloads, and app accounts before wiping, trading in, or giving away the old phone.
The exact prompts can differ by Xperia model and Android version. Google says cable and wireless transfer support the same data; the method choices and steps shown on your phones guide the process. Google’s Android transfer instructions

What transfers—and what may need separate attention
Android’s setup-copy flow can transfer apps and some app data, music, photos, videos, contacts stored on the phone or SIM, text messages, multimedia in text messages, call history, wallpaper, and most phone settings. The actual selection depends on the devices and Android versions.
Do not assume everything will move. Google lists downloads such as PDFs, media in hidden folders, apps installed outside Google Play, data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google accounts and their data, contacts or calendars synced with other services, ringtones, and some settings as items that may not copy in this flow. Check these on the old phone and move or configure them separately where needed.

If a Google Account backup exists, choose the restore-from-backup option during Xperia setup and sign in to the account that contains it. What is available to restore depends on whether backup was enabled and what the backup includes. Google’s guide to switching to a new Android device
If the Xperia is already set up
The direct copy option may no longer be available after initial setup. Google’s guidance says the available choices depend on the device and Android version; repeating the setup transfer may require a factory reset. A reset erases data on the Xperia, so first save anything already stored there and check the instructions for your specific device. Do not reset unless you are prepared to set the phone up again.
Why Xperia Transfer 2 is not the current option
Sony ended the Xperia Transfer 2 service on June 30, 2023, and removed the app from Google Play. Sony’s support notice recommends using built-in Android OS functions to transfer data to a new Xperia. Sony’s Xperia Transfer 2 notice
