If water tastes or smells strange after boiling, compare cold tap water, saucepan-boiled water and kettle-boiled water. That quick test helps show whether the kettle is the likely source—or whether the taste may come from your water supply or household plumbing. A strong, newly appeared or fuel-like smell warrants prompt contact with your local water utility.
First, find out whether the kettle is causing it
- Taste and smell freshly drawn cold tap water. If it is already unusual, the kettle is unlikely to be the only cause; the water supply, plumbing or another connected appliance may be involved.
- Boil fresh water in a clean saucepan and compare it with the kettle sample. If the saucepan water is normal but kettle-boiled water is not, the kettle is a more likely source.
- If the cold water is affected or the change is especially strong or new, contact your water utility. The UK Drinking Water Inspectorate recommends the saucepan comparison and advises contacting the water company promptly for a particularly strong or first-time taste or smell. Its guidance on TCP or medicinal tastes and odours also describes checking other household fixtures and appliances.
These comparisons help locate the likely source, but taste and smell alone are not a reliable all-purpose test of water safety. Do not treat a severe or unfamiliar change as only a cleaning problem.

Why kettle water can taste or smell strange
New plastic parts, seals or fittings
New plastic kettles and their seals or other fittings can contribute plastic-like or medicinal tastes. The UK Drinking Water Inspectorate notes that chlorine in water can interact with these materials, and that the issue may ease with use. Follow the first-use instructions for your exact model rather than assuming repeated boiling will solve it. For example, Tefal’s KI883D42 guidance says to rinse the interior and boil water once or twice before first use; that instruction is specific to that model. Read the KI883D42 manual and support information.

Mineral scale
Scale is mineral deposit left as water is heated. It is more common in hard-water areas and can appear as white or chalky residue; buildup may also affect taste and smell. Morphy Richards recommends regular descaling with a product suitable for the kettle’s material and following the product directions. See its kettle-care guidance.

Water left standing or boiled repeatedly
Water left in a kettle for a long time can taste stale. Empty the kettle after use and refill it with fresh cold water when you need to boil more. Repeated boiling can also contribute to an unusual taste in hot drinks, according to Water UK’s household water guidance.
Water supply, pipes or other appliances
If cold tap water is affected too, the cause may be outside the kettle. Natural organic compounds interacting with chlorine during boiling, plastic pipes in a new house, tap washers, or incorrectly installed washing-machine or dishwasher connections can contribute unusual tastes or smells. Water UK also discusses unusual medicinal or plastic tastes limited to hot drinks and recommends comparing saucepan-boiled water with water from the kettle. If the problem appears to involve plumbing or another appliance, ask your water utility or a qualified professional to investigate rather than changing connections yourself.

What to do when the kettle seems to be the source
- Discard old water and start fresh. Empty the kettle, then refill it with fresh cold tap water. This is a sensible first step if water has been standing or repeatedly boiled.
- Check for visible scale. White or chalky deposits make scale a plausible cause, particularly in a hard-water area.
- Descale only as the kettle’s manual allows. Choose a descaler suitable for the kettle’s materials and follow its label as well as the manufacturer’s directions. Rinse as the manual instructs. Methods differ by model: Tefal’s KI883D42 manual specifies different procedures for vinegar and citric acid, including a vinegar soak without heating, and warns against methods other than those it recommends. Do not boil a cleaning solution unless your exact manual explicitly tells you to.
- Protect the kettle while cleaning. Avoid abrasive products and do not scrub the heating element. Tefal says descaling is sufficient for the element and warns against abrasives in its model-specific guidance.
- For a new kettle, use the manufacturer’s first-use procedure. Do not assume that boiling it repeatedly will always remove an unusual taste or smell.
When to contact the water utility
Contact your local water utility promptly if the unusual taste or smell is present in cold tap water, is severe, has appeared for the first time, or resembles petrol, diesel or solvent. The UK Drinking Water Inspectorate advises prompt contact for especially strong or first-time changes; Water UK also treats unusual medicinal or plastic tastes in hot drinks as a reason to investigate with a saucepan comparison. These sources are UK guidance, so use the equivalent water provider in your area.

Replacement is not the first step. Try the comparison test and manual-approved care first. If the kettle remains the likely source and the problem persists, compare the materials that contact water—including seals and filters, not just the outer body—along with cleaning access, scale-filter removal, capacity, minimum fill, maintenance instructions and warranty. A stainless-steel kettle can be a practical trial for a plastic taste: Water Corporation of Western Australia suggests trying one. That is a troubleshooting option, not a guarantee that every stainless-steel model has no plastic or rubber parts.
