Use Samsung Smart Switch to move data from an old Android phone to your Galaxy A35. Start Smart Switch on the A35 and choose Receive data; on the old phone, choose Send data. Samsung prefers wireless transfer, but you can use a cable or a computer backup if pairing fails. A transfer is not a complete clone, so check app-specific backups and important files before wiping or trading in the old phone.
Before you transfer
- Charge both phones. For a long transfer, keep them connected to power if practical.
- Make sure you can unlock the old phone and that the A35 has enough free storage for the data you plan to move.
- Install or update Smart Switch on the old Android phone. It is generally preloaded on the new Samsung phone; if you cannot find it, open Samsung’s Smart Switch guide.
- Keep the phones near each other. For wireless transfer, use a reliable shared Wi-Fi connection and enable Bluetooth.
- Have passwords ready for apps that may require you to sign in again.
Samsung’s menu wording can vary by software version or region, so follow the prompts displayed on the phones if a label differs.

Transfer directly with Smart Switch
- Start on the Galaxy A35: Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Bring data from old device, or open Smart Switch directly. Tap Receive data, then choose Galaxy/Android.
- Choose a connection: Select Wireless or Cable on the A35. Samsung identifies wireless as its preferred method. Cable is useful if wireless pairing is unreliable or a wired connection better fits your setup. See Samsung’s connection guidance.
- Start on the old phone: Open Smart Switch, tap Send data, and select the same connection type. Approve the connection request if prompted.
- Select and send: On the A35, choose the available content categories you want to transfer and start the copy. Keep the phones nearby while the transfer runs; the time depends on the amount of selected data and connection strength.
Using a cable
Check the ports on both phones before connecting. Samsung UK says to connect the phones using the USB-C connector supplied with the new phone. If the old phone has a different port, Samsung describes using the old phone’s USB cable with a USB OTG adapter; Google also notes that an adapter may be needed when a cable does not fit both devices. Do not assume you need to buy an accessory: confirm whether the supplied cable or wireless transfer will work first. See Samsung UK’s transfer instructions and Google’s Android setup-copy guide.
What transfers—and what may need separate handling
Smart Switch lets you select from the categories available for your devices; the exact options can differ. Samsung says most app data can transfer, but secure or encrypted data—including WhatsApp chats—does not transfer through Smart Switch. Some apps keep information on their own servers, sideloaded apps may need to be installed manually, and app credentials such as banking logins may not carry over. Use each app’s own backup or recovery process where needed. Samsung’s transfer guide explains these limitations.

Google’s list of possible content for Android’s setup copy is not an exhaustive Smart Switch inventory. It includes apps and some app data, music, photos, videos, contacts, text and multimedia messages, most settings, wallpaper, and call history. Google says setup copy does not include downloads such as PDFs, media in hidden folders, apps outside Play Store, data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google accounts and their data, contacts or calendars synced elsewhere, ringtones, and certain settings. Check important files and sync accounts separately rather than assuming every item has moved. See Google’s Android setup-copy details.
For the cloud restore route described by Google, WhatsApp backups must have been enabled on the old phone. After signing into the new Android phone, open WhatsApp and follow its current in-app restore or migration prompts. Smart Switch itself does not transfer WhatsApp chats. Alternatives if direct transfer is inconvenient
Back up and restore with a PC or Mac
Samsung also supports using Smart Switch on a computer: install the PC or Mac app, back up the old phone, connect the A35, and restore the saved device data. This avoids direct phone-to-phone wireless pairing. Follow Samsung’s computer transfer instructions.
Restore an existing Google One backup
If the old phone is no longer available, you may be able to restore a Google One device backup during setup, provided backup was enabled before the old phone became unavailable. Choose the relevant backup and the data types to restore when prompted. See Google’s instructions for copying apps and data.

If you already skipped setup transfer
Look for Finish setting up on the A35 or check Settings > Accounts and backup for Smart Switch. Samsung provides a Smart Switch route after initial setup, but options can differ by device software. Google warns that some devices may require returning to setup or resetting the phone to use Android’s setup-copy flow. Do not reset the A35 without first confirming that anything already stored on it is backed up. See Google’s transfer troubleshooting guidance and Samsung’s Smart Switch instructions.
If Smart Switch wireless pairing fails
- Restart both phones and bring them close together.
- Check that both have adequate charge, Smart Switch is installed and current, Bluetooth is enabled, and the phones share Wi-Fi or have sufficient mobile data.
- Move other nearby phones running Smart Switch away while pairing.
- If wireless still will not connect, try a compatible cable connection.

If you are using Android’s setup copy and Wi-Fi is slow or unavailable, Google recommends trying a cable when the phone offers that option. Verify the A35 before retiring the old phone
- Open the apps and accounts you rely on and sign in where required.
- Check contacts, photos, messages, call history, and any important downloads or hidden-folder media.
- Complete WhatsApp’s separate restore or migration flow if you use it.
- Keep the old phone unchanged until you have confirmed the A35 contains the important data and can access the accounts you need.
If the old phone has a broken or unresponsive display, ordinary Smart Switch steps may not be possible; Samsung handles that as a separate support case, and recovery depends on the situation. Start with Samsung’s Smart Switch support.
