Choose a cloud or AI provider by checking what it can access, what it keeps, where data is processed, and how you can recover or move your data—not by relying on a “private,” “encrypted” or country-of-incorporation label. The right alternative depends on the specific service and your workflow; the available evidence supports useful questions and a few product-specific examples, but not a definitive ranking.
What should you compare before switching?
Start with the data you plan to put into the service. A storage provider, email service and AI assistant handle different kinds of information, and protections can differ between products from the same company. Check the current policy and technical documentation for the exact product and account type you would use.

- Content encryption: Identify which files, messages, prompts and outputs are encrypted, where encryption happens, and who holds the keys. “Encrypted” alone does not tell you whether the provider can decrypt data or whether protection applies end to end.
- Metadata and account records: Ask what the service can see or retain beyond content, such as account activity or information needed to operate the service.
- Location and legal process: Check where data is stored or processed and whether you can choose a location. Treat location as one factor, not proof that the provider cannot access data or is exempt from legal demands.
- Retention, deletion and backups: Look for how long information is retained, what deletion covers, and how backups or legal requests are handled.
- AI training and use: For AI services, look for product- and account-specific terms describing whether submitted data may be used to train models. Do not infer the answer from an encryption claim or an organization-level data-location statement.
- Recovery and control: Understand how account recovery works, who controls encryption keys, and what happens if a user loses access.
- Practical fit: Check export and migration options, integrations, collaboration, accessibility, administration needs and total cost. A stronger privacy posture may not be useful if the service cannot support your essential workflow.
What do the available provider examples establish?
The examples below illustrate why product-specific claims matter. They are not a complete comparative audit, and the stated protections should be verified against current documentation before you choose.

How should you choose a private cloud storage alternative?
- List what you need to store. Separate sensitive documents, shared work files, photos and records that can tolerate ordinary provider access. This helps you decide which data needs the strongest protections.
- Read the exact product policy. Confirm the encryption scope, provider access, metadata, retention, deletion, backup and recovery details for the plan and region you intend to use. Do not transfer a claim about one product to another product from the same company.
- Test the workflow before migrating. Check how collaborators will access files, whether your integrations work, and how export or migration is handled. The provider examples above do not establish a comparable evaluation of these workflow features.
- Decide how much administration you can own. A selectable hosting location can be useful, but it is not a substitute for reviewing access controls and encryption. If you host or manage software yourself, account for setup, updates, backups and ongoing maintenance.
- Make a small, reversible move first. Try representative files and sharing scenarios, confirm that recovery and export work as expected, and only then decide whether to move the rest of your data.
How should you assess AI providers’ use of your data?
Do not choose an AI service on the assumption that “private” means prompts are never retained or used for training. Check the terms for the specific product and account type, including retention, training, human or service access, deletion, and any controls available to the user or administrator.

The Mistral material described above addresses organization data location and safeguards for personal-data processing. It is not enough to recommend Mistral—or any other provider—as a consumer AI service that does not train on submitted data. A sound comparison needs current primary documentation for the consumer services being considered; the evidence here does not establish a cross-provider answer.

Choose the service whose documented protections match the data you will entrust to it and whose recovery, collaboration, migration and administration requirements you can meet. If a provider does not clearly answer a material question—especially who can access content, how long it is retained, or whether AI inputs may be used for training—treat that point as unresolved rather than filling the gap with a marketing label or a claim about another product.
