To move data from an old Android phone to a Motorola, start the Motorola’s initial setup, connect it to Wi-Fi, choose the option to copy apps and data, then follow the prompts to connect the old phone or restore an available Google Account backup. Keep both phones charged and the old phone unlocked. The exact options depend on the Motorola model and Android version.
Before you begin
- Charge both phones and keep them near each other.
- Make sure you can unlock the old phone with its PIN, pattern, or password.
- Have the Google Account credentials used on the old phone available.
- Back up the old phone if possible, and connect the Motorola to Wi-Fi during setup.
Motorola says its setup transfer can copy apps, music, contacts, messages, and more. Its generic transfer instructions and the moto g 2026 guide are not universal menus for every Motorola: wording and available choices vary by model and software version.

Transfer directly during Motorola setup
- Turn on the Motorola and choose your language.
- Connect it to Wi-Fi when prompted.
- Choose the setup option to copy apps and data from an old Android phone.
- Follow the Motorola prompts to connect the phones and select what to copy. Keep the old phone unlocked and nearby.
- Choose a cable or wireless transfer if setup offers both, then follow the on-screen pairing instructions until the copy finishes.
Cable or wireless?
Google recommends a cable in its new-device setup guide. The cable must fit both phones; an adapter may be needed, and the cable must support data transfer rather than charging only. Google says wired and wireless transfer support the same data, but wireless availability depends on the device and can be slow. Follow the method recommended by the Motorola setup screen.

Google estimates Android-to-Android transfer may take from a few minutes to over an hour depending on the amount of data being copied. That is a general estimate, not a guaranteed time. Keep both phones powered and connected while the transfer runs.

What transfers—and what may not
Motorola lists the following as content that can copy during setup. This is a supported-content list, not a guarantee that every app’s private data will move.
- Apps and app data
- Music, photos, and videos
- Google accounts
- Contacts stored on the phone or SIM
- Text messages and multimedia attachments
- Most phone settings, wallpaper, and call history
Motorola says its described transfer does not copy downloads such as PDFs, apps installed outside Google Play, non-Google accounts, contacts and calendars belonging to other services, or ringtones. Google also cautions that not all apps back up or restore all settings and data. Copy important downloads separately to a computer or cloud storage, and check critical apps individually after setup.

A Google Account backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. Photos and videos are backed up through Google Photos when that service is used. Backup and restore behavior varies by device and app, and some data is encrypted using the device screen lock. See Google’s backup and restore guidance.

During setup, sign in to the same Google Account used for the old phone and select an available backup when offered. This requires that a backup exists and that you can access the account. Some data may not have been backed up; Google says a full restore can take up to 24 hours, which is guidance rather than a promised completion time.

Google also warns that a backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower version; the result may be incomplete. Install an available Android update on the Motorola and follow the setup restore prompts.
If you skipped the transfer during setup
On supported Motorola models, you may be able to continue using the Android Setup notification or a “Finish setting up” option. Open the notification or follow the finish-setup route shown on the phone. The label and availability vary. Some Android versions or manufacturers also expose a copy-data option in Settings, but there is no single path that applies to every Motorola.

If there is no continuation option, Google says a factory reset may be needed to repeat initial setup. A reset erases data already created on the new Motorola, so save or back up anything you added after setup before resetting it. Then start setup again and choose the copy or restore option.

The cable is not detected
- Unplug and reconnect both ends; try another data-capable cable.
- Check whether an adapter is on the wrong end and inspect the old phone’s port for debris.
- If the cable still fails, choose wireless transfer if setup offers it.
The transfer stopped or a phone ran low on power
Recharge the phones, reconnect them if needed, and retry. Google says the process can usually be restarted after a cable disconnects or a battery runs out.

Wireless transfer is unavailable or slow
Some devices do not support wireless setup transfer, and Google notes that it can be slow. Use a cable if setup recommends one. If you skipped QR pairing, return to the pairing step to transfer directly; otherwise, many devices continue with a cloud restore.
SIM contacts are missing
Import them separately through the Contacts app. Motorola documents importing SIM contacts into a Google Account or onto the device in its transfer instructions.
Verify your data before erasing the old phone
Check essential contacts, messages, photos, files, and account access on the Motorola. If something important is missing, look for it on the old phone or in the relevant app’s own backup before wiping that device. Once you have verified what you need, Google recommends clearing and resetting an old phone before recycling, donating, or trading it in.
