How Steam Ranks Top Sellers—and What the List Does and Doesn’t Tell You

Steam’s Top Sellers chart ranks games by revenue, not by copies sold or player count. Valve says that revenue can include game editions, DLC, and in-game transactions, so a free-to-play game or a DLC pack can appear on the list even when the base game’s displayed price is free.

What does Steam’s Top Sellers rank mean?

Valve says Steam’s top-selling lists rank games by total revenue, including revenue from editions, DLC, and in-game transactions. The chart is therefore a relative revenue ranking for the selected chart context—not a public sales ledger. Valve’s September 22, 2022 explanation describes the metric but does not publish the exact calculation formula, a live-chart time window, per-game revenue, unit sales, or whether the displayed figure is gross, net of refunds, or profit.

Steam combines revenue from a game’s editions, such as standard and deluxe versions. A DLC can also chart as its own entry if it earns enough to rank separately. As a result, an entry’s position cannot be explained by looking only at the base game’s price.

Why is a free game on Steam’s Top Sellers list?

“Free to Play” describes the game’s entry price; it does not mean the game has earned no money. Valve says the revenue ranking includes qualifying purchases such as season passes, expansions, and other in-game content. Its FAQ explains that the earlier approach counted premium game purchases, which could leave free or inexpensive games with substantial content sales underrepresented. The newer format also combines editions to reduce duplicate entries. Steam’s Top Sellers FAQ explains this rationale.

A free-to-play title can therefore rank highly because players are buying content, while a paid game’s rank may reflect sales across its editions and add-ons. The chart does not identify how much of a title’s revenue came from any one source.

What the chart columns tell you

The live chart describes itself as the “Top 100 selling games right now, by revenue.” It displays rank, price, weekly change, and weeks on the chart. Valve defines “change” as positions gained or lost since the previous week, and “weeks” as time spent on the Top Sellers chart. The live Steam chart does not provide exact unit sales or per-game revenue in those columns.

  • Rank: relative position in the selected revenue chart, not an amount of revenue.
  • Price: the displayed current price or free-to-play status. It does not capture the full revenue mix counted by the ranking.
  • Change: movement in chart positions since the previous week, not a percentage change in sales.
  • Weeks: how long the title has appeared on the chart, not its cumulative sales or revenue.

Why region and time period change the comparison

Steam offers country-specific charts for popular Steam regions. The chart defaults to the user’s country when a list is available, and users can switch to the global chart or another country’s view. A rank is meaningful only alongside that geography: a country chart and the global chart are not interchangeable. Valve’s chart announcement describes the regional lists.

The live Top Sellers page and weekly Top Sellers chart also answer different time-based questions. Valve defines the weekly chart’s revenue period as Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific to the following Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific. The live chart is labeled “right now,” but Valve’s published explanation does not specify its calculation window. Weekly rank movement and weeks on chart add context, but neither is a lifetime-sales measure. Steam’s Charts overview presents live, weekly, monthly, and yearly chart sections as distinct views.

Top Sellers versus Most Played

Top Sellers and Most Played measure different things. Valve describes the real-time Most Played chart as ranking games by players in the game right now; its daily view can rank games by unique players over the preceding 24 hours. Weekly Top Sellers instead ranks revenue over its defined Monday-to-Monday period. Valve’s chart announcement distinguishes these chart types.

Steam chart Metric What it helps answer
Real-time Top Sellers Total revenue, including editions, DLC, and in-game transactions Which games rank highest by revenue in the selected chart context
Real-time Most Played Players in the game right now Which games have the largest current player counts
Daily Most Played view Unique players over the preceding 24 hours Which games had the largest recent unique-player counts
Weekly Top Sellers Revenue earned from Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific to the following Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific Which games ranked highest by revenue during that defined week

What a high rank does—and doesn’t—show

A high rank shows stronger relative revenue performance in the selected chart, geography, and period. It does not establish that a game sold the most copies, has the most owners or active players, or is the best-reviewed game. Those are different measures, and the Top Sellers ranking is not a review score.
